In the first episode that Renge appeared in, "Attack of the Lady Manager," she moved to Japan in order to marry Kyoya. He reminded her of a character in a popular dating sim game that she was in love with. By the end of the episode, she had found out that Kyoya was not like the person in the game and was no longer in love with him, moving on to Haruhi instead.

Kyoya only befriended Tamaki because it was his father's wish to keep an eye on him. Tamaki was the heir to a potential competing company and Kyoya's father felt that it was a good way to keep tabs on the company. Kyoya, however, was jealous of Tamaki's easy path into the position of heir while Kyoya himself had to work hard to prove to his father that he was more capable of leading the Otori business than his older brothers. Upon getting to know him, Kyoya found Tamaki as an idiot and was frustrated that Tamaki asked him to take him all around Japan as a tourist. Tamaki eventually proved himself as a good friend and helped Kyoya see that he didn't need to follow his brothers' footsteps but should try to live life the way Kyoya wanted to. The two became best friends and started the Host Club together.
