Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "A Country Practice" centred on a medical practice in a small town in rural New South Wales. What was the name of the senior doctor who appeared in every season of the show?

Answer: Terence Elliott

Terence Elliott, often called "Dr Elliott" even in social settings, was the core character in the series. Dr Elliott was portrayed as intelligent, sensible and socially progressive, and was commonly looked to as the voice of wisdom by the residents of Wandin Valley. The poor man had his demons, and over the course of the series racked up two marriages, a divorce, two abandoned engagements, several struggles with alcoholism, and he also lost two children.

Terence Elliott was played by Shane Porteous.
2. The death of Molly Jones remains one of Australian television's most remembered scenes. What caused the untimely demise of this beloved character?

Answer: Leukaemia

Oh, Molly! Molly Jones was one of Australian tv's favourite characters in the 1980s. Molly and her husband Brendan moved to Wandin Valley at the beginning of the first season and over the years had two children. Molly was unconventional, devoted to environmental and social justice issues, and loved by everyone in town - including Bob Hatfield, despite thinking her a bit of a "commo" and ratbag at times. A few decadeds later, Molly's death is still considered one of the most memorable moments on Australian television.

Molly Jones was played by Anne Tenney, who won Logie Awards for her role (Most Popular Actress) in 1985 and 1986.
3. What profession was Brendan Jones on television's "A Country Practice"?

Answer: Nurse

Being the early 1980s, a male nurse was considered rather unusual, even more so for a conservative country town. Brendan also had a stint as Acting Matron and became the region's district nurse after Molly's death (for those not familiar with district nurses, it's someone who delivers nursing care to people in their homes). In 1986, Brendan remarried and moved away with his daughter, Chloe, and new wife.

Brendan Jones was played by Shane Withington, who won the 1985 Logie for Best Lead Actor in a Series for his role.
4. Which of these "A Country Practice" characters was the town gossip and busybody?

Answer: Esme Watson

Esme was a socially conservative, easily scandalised spinster who was often roped into Bob and Cookie's various schemes. She spent most of her time keeping a watchful eye on the behaviour of the townsfolk and expressing concern about societal change and whatever the local young people were up to.

Esme Watson was played by Joyce Jacobs, who appeared in the pilot episode and was a cast regular from 1982 to 1993.
5. What was the relationship between Jo and Judy Loveday on "A Country Practice"?

Answer: They were cousins

Jo's widowed father sent the unruly teenager to live with her grandmother but they didn't get on, so Jo ran away and turned up unexpectedly on her cousin Judy's doorstep. Jo finished school at Burrigan High, moving in with the Gilroys when Judy left Wandin Valley and married nurse Michael Langley.

Jo was played by actress Josephine Mitchell, who was 20 years of age when she began playing 15 year old Jo.
6. Many scenes in "A Country Practice" took place at the local RSL club. Vernon Locke, the bartender/manager/cook, was more commonly known by what nickname?

Answer: Cookie

Cookie used to be a shearer's cook, which was where he got his nickname. He had been married in the past, but had no children, and was briefly engaged to Esme, the only person to call him Vernon. Throughout the series he was continually coming up with "get rich quick" scams with Bob, which inevitably failed.

Cookie was played by Syd Heylen, an old vaudeville actor and former soldier who served on the Kokoda Track in WWII.
7. Ben Green was the first character on "A Country Practice" to identify as which of the following?

Answer: Jewish

Ben Green arrived in Wandin Valley in 1985 to take over the veterinary practice when Vicky left, bringing with him a large collection of animals abandoned by their owners that he could not bear to put down. His alternative treatment methods, including acupuncture and herbal remedies, were viewed with suspicion by some of the Valley's more traditional residents.

Ben Green was played by Nicholas Bufalo.
8. What were the favourite pastimes of Frank Gilroy, the long-serving police sergeant on "A Country Practice"?

Answer: Growing roses and musical theatre

Frank Gilroy appeared in every season of the show. When the series began, he was a widower; he soon began courting Shirley Dean whom he married in 1983. Frank and Shirley were a case of "opposites attract" - he was conservative and traditional while she was eccentric and adventurous. As well as tending his roses and singing Gilbert and Sullivan numbers, Frank was a keen chef (while Shirley couldn't cook toast).

Sergeant Gilroy was played by Brian Wenzel, and was once described by the NSW Police Commissioner as the force's greatest recruiting tool.
9. Maggie Sloan, hospital matron on "A Country Practice", was born in which country?

Answer: England

Matron Sloan arrived in Wandin Valley in 1983, and initially came across as a stern disciplinarian (nicknamed "The Old Battle Axe" by nurse Judy Loveday). Over time she was shown to be a poetry lover and skilled poker player, and she developed an unlikely friendship with plumber Bob Hatfield. Throughout the series it was revealed that she lived through the Blitz in London as a child, in which her brother was killed and all of her possessions were destroyed.

Maggie Sloan was played by British actress Joan Sydney.
10. Shirley Gilroy, receptionist at the Wandin Valley medical practice and occasional surgical nurse, was the mother of which other character on "A Country Practice"?

Answer: Vicky Dean

When the series started Shirley was a divorcee who lived with her adult daughter. Vicky moved out when Shirley married local police officer Frank Gilroy but kept running her vet surgery out of Shirley's house. Shirley was an unconventional character, interested in Indian spirituality and often seen meditating under her pyramid.

Shirley was played by well-known Australian singer/entertainer Lorrae Desmond.
