Although twelve queens returned for the first "All Stars" season in 2012, the queens in that season were paired up for most of the challenges throughout. This season, four years later, did away with the pairings and had the queens go head to head with several rule changes to the previous iteration's less-popular formula. That said, the ten queens competing had to deal with some of the most strenuous challenges in the series, many of which focused on establishing their drag brands at any cost. "All Stars 3", in 2018, maintained the ten queen total.

Ru reasoned that because they were all all-stars, she would not be eliminating any queens all season, and she never did. Instead, she would only be rewarding success and allowing the top two queens each week to lipsynch for their legacies with the winner of that showdown taking home a $10,000 tip.

The winner would also be responsible for sending one of the bottom two or three queens home for that week because with great power comes great responsibility. Ru would only end up casting a vote in the finale when she would crown the winner.

The festivities began immediately when Ru asked the ten returning queens to open the library for the 'Reading is Fundamental' mini-challenge and then gave them the opportunity to prepare their talents and outfits for the first-ever 'All Star Talent Show' on the main stage.

In front of a live audience, there were five straight-up musical numbers, but there were also variety shows, a spoken word session, a burlesque number, a dance, and a gymnastics routine. Roxxy Andrews and Tatianna won the challenge and sent home Coco Montrese, regarded as the weakest performer for her flat dance number.

Answer: Adore Delano

After the first intense critique and elimination, Adore thought on the proceedings and felt that she would be unfit to continue on the show. During Ru's check-in with the girls in week two, Adore decided that the vibes were extra-harsh and believed that Michelle Visage's critiques in particular would be too affecting. Since it was "different from what she thought it would be", Adore decided to leave the show before the maxi-challenge in the second week, believing that her head just wasn't in it to be back in the competition with the personal relationships she'd already built working with many of its stars.

Answer: Former contestants

With Adore Delano leaving the competition in this week, only eight queens were asked to bring their best celebrity impersonations to the table in an All Star Snatch Game with former All Star alumnus Jujubee and Raven taking the player spots during the session.

The challenge was subsequently won by Alaska (portraying Mae West) and Katya (portraying Bjork) and the two battled it out during their lipsynch to send home Tatianna (who portrayed Arianna Grande and, actually, won the first-ever Snatch Game as Britney Spears) to the song "Le Freak (Freak Out)".

After the third maxi-challenge which forced the queens to take on historical roles in a song and dance sequence on the main stage, Alyssa Edwards (as Annie Oakley) and Detox (as Marie Antoinette) lipsynched to Taylor Dayne's "Tell It To My Heart" with the former being declared the victor. Alyssa ultimately chose to eliminate Ginger Minj, who she claimed had coasted through the competition as being 'safe' during previous weeks.

This garnered criticism from other queens who, up until that point, had planned to send each other home for performing poorly in each specific week, disregarding previous bad weeks. Detox revealed that she would have sent Katya home.

The next week, Alaska chose to send Alyssa Edwards home, having been paired up with her during a drag movie sequel challenge.

In the fifth episode, the eliminated queens (excluding Adore Delano) were brought back into the mix and granted not only the opportunity to fight for their right to return to the competition but, if they were the top two queens in the challenge, they could send home one of the bottom remaining queens by winning the lipsynch for their legacy. Alyssa Edwards and Tatianna won the challenge (with their partners Alaska and Detox) and battled onstage to Rihanna's "Shut Up and Drive" to such success that both of them were allowed to return. Ultimately, only one person was eliminated; both of them nominated Phi Phi O'Hara to leave over Roxxxy Andrews. Phi Phi, angered by her reception on the show, chose not to return for the reunion at the end of the season.

Answer: Their family members

In the seventh week, the final five queens were reunited with female family members and told that it would be their opportunity to examine their own drag family values by giving makeovers and presenting complimentary looks on the main stage for judging. Katya and Detox won by making over their mother and sister, respectively, leading to an emotional elimination in which Detox, unable to send consistent bottom-of-the-pack queen and Rolaskatox member, Roxxxy, home over Alyssa Edwards, sealing in the final four.

Answer: Read U Wrote U

The final four were required to form an all-star supergroup by developing their own looks and lyrics to perform a remixed version of the RuPaul song "Read U Wrote U" on the main stage to choreography provided by "So You Think You Can Dance" contestant Travis Wall.

The challenge ended up being popular enough to return in subsequent seasons, albeit with different songs. Following this, the final four showed off their most glamorous final drag looks and Roxxxy Andrews was eliminated in fourth place.

Answer: Alaska

After eight weeks of competition and a final lipsynch (this time for their LIVES!), Alaska was awarded the grand prize of $100,000 and a year's supply of cosmetics from Beverly Hills Anastasia. This also meant that Alaska would have her picture hung up in the Drag Race Hall of Fame next to first-time "All Stars" winner Chad Michaels. Both would return in "All Stars 3" to add another returning queen to the gang in 2018.
