1. There were two musical guests on the first 'Saturday Night Live' show. Who were they?

Answer: Janis Ian and Billy Preston

All of these artists were musical guests in the first season of 'Saturday Night Live,' but Ian and Preston were the very first musical guests. Ian performed 'At Seventeen' and Preston performed 'Nothin' From Nothin' on the first show, which aired on October 11, 1975.
2. Adam Sandler provided many musical moments on 'Saturday Night Live.' On the 1993 Valentine's Day show, he performed a song commemorating his love for a piece of clothing that contained the lyric, 'Oh what is it about you that makes me so jolly? Is it your fifty cotton or your fifty poly?' What was the name of the song?

Answer: Red Hooded Sweatshirt

'I love you sweeeeatshirt, red hooded sweeeeatshirt.' Paul and Linda McCartney joined in on the chorus at the end of the song.
3. Who was the first of the former Beatles to appear as a musical guest on the show?

Answer: George Harrison

Harrison appeared in the second season on the November 20, 1976 show, performing 'Here Comes the Sun' and 'Homeward Bound' with Paul Simon.
4. There was a recurring sketch where Phil Hartman, Jon Lovtiz, and Kevin Nealon would sing various holiday greetings even though their characters' grasp on English was not very strong. Which of the following was not one of the characters in the trio?

Answer: Dracula

Hartman played Frankenstein, Lovitz was Tonto, and Nealon was Tarzan. The sketch often ended when Frankenstein would destroy their props or have some other mishap, such as the time smoke started coming out of him during their rendition of 'Away in a Manger' (or, as they sang it, 'Away in Manger').
5. True or False: Spinal Tap appeared as a musical guest on 'Saturday Night Live.'

Answer: True

Spinal Tap performed 'Christmas with the Devil' and 'Big Bottom' on the May 5, 1984 show. The three main Spinal Tappers were all regulars on 'Saturday Night Live' at various times. Christopher Guest (Nigel Tufnel) was a cast member in the 1984-1985 season, Michael McKean (David St. Hubbins) was a cast member in 1994, and Harry Shearer (Derek Smalls) spent two seasons on the show -- 1979-1980 and 1984-1985.
6. In a classic bit, Steve Martin commemorated the 'Treasures of Tutankhamen' art exhibit, which was touring the United States, with which song?

Answer: King Tut

'Born in Arizona. Moved to Babylonia. King Tut.' 'King Tut' was released as a single and appeared on Steve's album 'A Wild and Crazy Guy,' which won the Grammy for Best Comedy Album in 1979.
7. Yes or No: Has 'Saturday Night Live' ever aired without a musical guest?

Answer: Yes

Most of the times this happened it was a 'Best of' show, but on December 2, 1978 Walter Matthau hosted the show and there was no musical guest.
8. Both Phil Hartman and Joe Piscopo portrayed which legendary singer on 'Saturday Night Live'?

Answer: Frank Sinatra

In the sketch 'The Sinatra Group' (a panel discussion take-off on 'The McLaughlin Group'), Hartman's Sinatra takes on Sinead O'Connor (Jan Hooks), Billy Idol (Sting), Luther Campbell (Chris Rock), and Steve Lawrence (Mike Myers) and Eydie Gorme (Victoria Jackson). Over the course of this sketch, Sinatra calls O'Connor 'Sine-aid,' 'Sinbad,' 'Skinhead,' and 'Uncle Fester.'
9. All but one of the following artists appeared as a musical guest on 'Saturday Night Live' in each of the first three decades the show was on -- the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Which artist did not appear as a musical guest in all three decades?

Answer: Bob Dylan

Dylan appeared as a musical guest on 'Saturday Night Live' on October 20, 1979, but he did not appear on the show as a musical guest at all in the 1980s and 1990s.
10. Bill Murray created a character known as Nick the Lounge Singer. Nick's last name changed based on the location of the lounge in which he was playing. Which of the following was not a name that Nick used while Murray was a regular on the show (1977-1980), but when Bill was a guest host in 1987?

Answer: Nick Slammer

Murray hosted the show in 1987 and reprised his role as Nick, who was performing at the Crestwood Minimum Security Prison Detention Center and Warehouse as Nick Slammer.
11. Which one of these legendary artists never appeared as a musical guest on 'Saturday Night Live'?

Answer: John Lennon

All of the Beatles except Lennon appeared on the show.
12. Sketches featuring musical medleys have been a 'Saturday Night Live' staple over the years, including the husband and wife duo of Marty Culp and Bobbi Moughan-Culp. Who portrays the Culps?

Answer: Will Ferrell and Ana Gasteyer

The Culps are middle school music teachers and moonlight at functions such as wedding receptions and shopping malls, performing their medleys. (One of my favorite recurring medley sketches featured Nora Dunn and Jan Hooks as The Sweeney Sisters.)
13. I'm guessing that most of you are familiar (either from the actual event or its recreation on the 25th anniversary show) with the infamous 1977 Elvis Costello appearance where he stopped a song in mid-verse and had his band play 'Radio, Radio' instead. However, can you name the song that he played in his first musical set on the show that night?

Answer: Watching the Detectives

Costello's musical rebellion got him banned from 'Saturday Night Live' for many years, and he did not appear on the show again until March 25, 1989. 'Less Than Zero' was the song Costello started playing in his second musical set on the show before cutting it off and launching into 'Radio, Radio.' (Although, apparently the SNL cd liner notes -- incorrectly -- claim that 'Allison' was the song that was cut off.)
14. Dana Carvey appeared as musician Derek Stephens in a sketch where he plays a love song with an unusual, vegetable name. What was the name of the song?

Answer: Chopping Broccoli

Carvey accompanies himself on the piano and sings, 'And my lady, She went downtown, She bought some broccoli, She brought it home. She's chopping broccoli. She's chopping broccoli. She's chopping broccoli. She's chopping broccoli.'
15. An easy one to end with -- What was the name of the band featuring Jake Blues (John Belushi) and Elwood Blues (Dan Aykroyd)?

Answer: Blues Brothers

The Blues Brothers performed as the show's musical guests on April 22, 1978 ('I Don't Know') and again on November 18, 1978 ('Soul Man,' 'Got Everything I Need, Almost,' and 'Get Back to You').
