Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following statements correctly describes an event that occurred in the second season?

Answer: Claire Fisher takes nude photos of Billy Chenowith.

In the episode "Someone Else's Eyes," Billy asks Claire to help him take some photos of himself; to her mild surprise, he drops his robe and stands nude before her. The photos turn out to be quite good, and partially inspire Claire to go to art school. Claire later takes pictures of herself, but she is fully dressed.
2. Keith Charles (Mathew St. Patrick) sees to it that his sister Karla is arrested. What's the charge?

Answer: vehicular manslaughter

Karla accidentally hits a homeless man with her car while arguing with her daughter Taylor. She flees the scene, but Taylor tells David about it. David subsequently tells Keith, and Keith determines via his police contacts that Karla did in fact commit the crime. He turns her in himself.
3. Thanks to a desperate, ill-advised tryst with his ex-girlfriend Lisa (Lili Taylor), Nate Fisher (Peter Krause) learns that he is going to become a father. In what unusual setting does he finally reveal this fact to his fiancee Brenda Chenowith (Rachel Griffiths)?

Answer: a synagogue

After a pre-marriage counseling session with Ari (Molly Parker), a rabbi whom Nate has befriended, the couple makes a stop in the synagogue, and during a discussion about honesty, Nate finally feels compelled to tell Brenda about the pregnancy.
4. During the last few episodes of the season, Nate befriends a bitter, dying young man named Aaron Buchbinder. The cancer that is killing Aaron is centered in what part of his body?

Answer: his pancreas

Aaron adds that pancreatic cancer is "one of the worst kinds you can get."
5. Ruth Fisher (Frances Conroy) breaks up with her boyfriend Nikolai (Ed O'Ross) in episode twelve, "I'll Take You." Where does this happen?

Answer: in a movie theater

Right in the middle of "Blade II," in fact. Nikolai doesn't seem troubled by this turn of events in the slightest.
6. During a mushroom-inspired haze, Claire Fisher (Lauren Ambrose) creates an article of clothing that she rather awkwardly presents to her mother as a gift. What is the article of clothing?

Answer: a pair of pants

The pants are patchwork in appearance, and they have small bells on the cuffs. Claire, once she's "sober," is embarrassed to see (and hear) her mother wearing the pants the very next day.
7. How much money did Ruth pay off a Russian mobster in order to save Nikolai -- who had his legs broken early in the season thanks to an outstanding debt -- from further violence?

Answer: $87,000

That was a fair chunk of the money she had left from her late husband's life insurance payoff.
8. Brenda had quite a bit of sex this season, most of it with people other than her fiancee Nate. Which of the following people did she NOT have sex with?

Answer: a female prostitute who is her client and confidante

In "The Secret," Brenda attends a "sex party" (the night before her bridal shower, no less!) and spends the night with a married couple and their electronic acoutrements. In "The Liar and the Whore," she wordlessly invites two teenagers into her home and sleeps with both of them. Melissa (Kellie Waymire) and Brenda do seem to be close, but there's never any indication that their relationship was anything but platonic.
9. Rico Diaz (Freddy Rodriguez) and his wife Vanessa (Justina Machado) inherit an unexpected sum of money from their former neighbor upon her death. How much was it?

Answer: $149,000

Vanessa: "A hundred and forty-nine thousand dollars? That's like...that's like...a hundred and fifty thousand dollars!"
10. What college does Claire finally decide to attend?

Answer: LAC Arts College

Claire actually seems excited about being among fellow "weird" kids...especially when she sees a hearse in the student parking lot.
11. Claire learns that her high school counselor Gary has not only lost his job, but his girlfriend as well. What was her name?

Answer: Jenny

Gary is pretty distraught in the last couple of episodes, and even breaks down in tears at one point when he thinks no one is watching.
12. Who is the first member of the Fisher family to learn that Lisa has given birth to her and Nate's baby?

Answer: Ruth

Ruth just happens to answer the phone at the Fisher house when Lisa -- who was probably hoping to find Nate -- calls with the good news.
13. What is the name of Lisa and Nate's daughter?

Answer: Maya

Presumably after the pagan "earth goddess," given Lisa's personality and general "granola" vibe.
14. Brenda finds her parents' "re-commitment ceremony" so troubling that, as she explains to her brother Billy (Jeremy Sisto), no word currently exists to describe it. What two words does she combine into a new word to express her distaste?

Answer: "vomitous" and "atrocious"

The word she comes up with is "vomitrocious." Billy thinks his sister is being too cynical, which is a bit of a switch.
15. In "I'll Take You," we learn through a masterful series of flashbacks that Rico first met Nathaniel Fisher, Sr. (Richard Jenkins) while helping his mother to arrange a funeral for his father. What was Rico's father's first name?

Answer: Mauricio

We see a sign reading "Mauricio Ricardo Diaz: 1945-1992" at the funeral.
16. Keith finds himself in a spot of trouble at the end of the season -- we see him about to sit down and give a videotaped deposition to his superiors, and probably representatives of the LAPD's internal affairs department. Why?

Answer: He brutalized a wife-beater.

Keith did indeed shoot an armed, altered man in the street earlier in the season, but the internal affairs department had deemed that incident a "clean shoot" well before the final episode. What got him into trouble was using (arguably) excessive force while subduing a man who had clearly been abusing his wife.
17. Claire has an amusing dream concerning her upcoming attempt to get into college that incorporates a scene from a particular movie. What's the movie?

Answer: "Flashdance"

In her dream, Claire replicates the audition scene at the end of "Flashdance" (1983) shot-for-shot -- she is forced to dance to Irene Cara's "Flashdance -- What a Feeling," and is even wearing the same outfit Jennifer Beals wore in the film...right down to the leg-warmers!
18. Fisher and Sons, as a corporation, finds itself in dire financial straits in the final episode of the season. Why?

Answer: The plumbing in the house requires massive repairs.

There was a brief moment when a client was indeed suing the company, but David (Michael C. Hall) solved that problem with a single conversation. A Kroehner executive threatened to get the boys fined due to the advertisement error, but it never happened...and in fact, Kroehner is no longer in any position to give the Fishers any trouble at all, as they are filing for bankruptcy by the end of the season.

The true problem is that the pipes in the house need to be completely refurbished, which will cost $38,000 -- money that the Fishers simply don't have.
19. At long last, thanks to the money he has inherited, Rico gets his wish, and is made a partner at Fisher and Sons thanks to a financial investment. How much does he give the Fisher brothers?

Answer: $75,000

Due to their sudden financial desperation, David and Nate quickly agree to make Rico a partner (he will now own twenty-five percent of the company) if he gives them $75,000. Rico happily agrees.
20. Which character is featured in the final shot of the final episode of the season ("The Last Time")?

Answer: Nate

As Nate goes under the knife -- he's having extremely risky brain surgery -- we see him in his own dream, boarding a bus. Bring on season three!
