Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The show's title character was a police inspector. In what city did he live?

Answer: San Francisco

The show ran for two seasons, 1986-1988, on ABC Television in the United States. Despite its short run, the comedy picked up a loyal group of fans, and the two seasons were released on DVD in 2004 and 2005.
2. Who played the lead role as Inspector Hammer?

Answer: David Rasche

David Rasche was born in 1944 in St. Louis, Missouri. He was a co-founder of Victory Gardens Theater in Chicago.
3. How did Hammer get along with the head of the department, Captain Trunk?

Answer: Trunk could not stand Hammer

Hammer was constantly breaking department rules and getting the Captain in big trouble. On a regular basis, Trunk would blow his top and threaten to have Hammer fired.
4. What was in the bumper sticker on Hammer's car?

Answer: I (Heart) Violence

Hammer drove a green Dodge Regis. The car was decrepit and riddled with bullet holes.
5. Who was Hammer's partner on the force?

Answer: Sergeant Dori Doreau

Doreau and Hammer battled constantly, but still worked as a team. Detective Christine Cagney was one of the two main characters of the CBS show "Cagney and Lacey." Officers Furillo and Russo were part of the cast of NBC's "Hill Street Blues."
6. What type of gun did Hammer carry?

Answer: .44 Magnum

Hammer's devotion to the gun was legendary. It figured in the opening scene of the show, as the theme music played.
7. In a first-season episode, what group did Hammer have to infiltrate?

Answer: Elvis impersonators

Rasche was a big fan of Elvis, and got to do plenty of singing in "All Shook Up." The episode first aired in the U.S. on November 6, 1986.
8. With what unique apparatus did Hammer equip his gun?

Answer: A 'loudener,' the opposite of a silencer

This device does not actually exist. It was a parody intended to point up Hammer's inappropriate love of force.
9. What slogan did Hammer frequently shout?

Answer: Trust me, I know what I'm doing.

He said it in the opening segment of the show, and regularly thereafter. Of course, it's very rarely true. "Works for me!" was the motto of the title character on the NBC show "Hunter," and I made up the other two phrases.
10. What habit does Hammer reject as, surprisingly for him, too dangerous?

Answer: Smoking

Hammer's character was a parody of "tough cops" in movies, novels and television. Dirty Harry, played by Clint Eastwood on film, was the inspiration for many traits and jokes of Inspector Hammer.
