Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Susan received a valuable gift from an admirer (a signed edition of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic, "The Great Gatsby"). She believed the book was far too generous a gift to accept from a fan, so she arranged to return it. What was Susan surprised to discover about the person who sent her the book?

Answer: He was a teenage boy

Before meeting her mystery fan, Susan initially believed the book was sent to her by Douglas Naughton (a PhD, corporate CEO and yachtsman), based on information Todd found on the Internet. In fact, the book was sent by Naughton's son, Douglas Naughton, Jr. Young Doug was smitten with his lab partner at school, but she was sharing her affections with a new Canadian student who had asked her "ooot". Susan accompanied Doug Jr. to a high school dance, where he finally gained the attention of his dream girl.
2. Todd was responsible for creating a new web site for "The Gate". After his site won an award from "Online Digest", he decided to throw a party to celebrate his success. He invited all of his co-workers, telling them, "Bring your own chips, and something to sit on". He then added, "Oh, and if anyone has a spare ____, bring that, too". What was the missing item Todd wanted someone to bring?

Answer: Bathroom door

Yes, amazingly, Todd needed a bathroom door. He inherited his rather Bohemian lifestyle from his parents, who were hippies in the 1960s. Todd's role as the magazine's webmaster was featured during the second season episode "Susan's Minor Complication".

He was very nervous that his new web site would be a failure, telling Luis, "Will people like it? Will it be hip enough?" Todd also received the first manicure of his life during this episode (which was given to him by Vicki).
3. During the episode "Car Trouble", a car rental agency discriminated against Luis due to his ethnic background. In response, the crack investigative team from "The Gate" (Susan, Todd and Luis, guided by a very frustrated Maddy) mounted a "sting" operation. Once their plan was in motion, what was the biggest problem they experienced?

Answer: Todd's hidden microphone failed and gave him electric shocks

Predictably, the entire operation was a comedy of errors. The team's cover story was adequate, but little else went according to plan. Maddy was annoyed by Todd's antics and ripped off his ridiculous false mustache, but she never broke any equipment.

It was Todd's jacket that got caught in the door of the surveillance van, not Susan's skirt, and Susan never suffered the embarrassment of having her skirt torn off in public. Todd was very nervous, and perspiring heavily; perspiration shorted-out his hidden microphone, which then began shocking him.

His hidden camera (disguised as a fountain pen) continued to work perfectly, but Todd carelessly gave the camera pen to the rental car agent, forcing Susan to rush in and improvise a flimsy excuse to retrieve it.
4. The episode "Car Trouble" featured two black-and-white fantasy segments, which blended characters from three classic sitcoms of the 1950s and 1960s. Which of the following comedies was NOT depicted in those fantasy scenes?

Answer: The Dick Van Dyke Show

The fantasy scenes paid homage to "I Love Lucy", "Leave it to Beaver" and "I Dream of Jeannie". Luis played Ricky Ricardo, with Vicki portraying Lucy. Susan and Jack played June and Ward Cleaver, with Todd as the Beaver. Maddy appeared as Jeannie, wearing the provocative harem costume (causing Todd/Beaver to exclaim, "Wait 'til Wally hears about this!").
5. Worried because Nana was lonely and lacking male companionship, Susan set her up with a successful businessman, Peter DiCaprio, portrayed by veteran actor Tony Curtis. After he began dating Nana, Susan inadvertently discovered something about Peter that troubled her. What caused Susan's concern?

Answer: He was a crossdresser

Susan was clothes shopping when she bumped into Peter and discovered his secret. Nana proved to be fairly open-minded about Peter's unusual habit, but still ended their relationship because she didn't share his conservative political outlook.

This episode, "Matchmaker, Matchmaker", was an homage to Tony Curtis and the role he played in Billy Wilder's 1959 comedy, "Some Like it Hot". Considered by many to be one of the classic comedy films of all time, "Some Like it Hot" starred Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and Marilyn Monroe. In the film, Curtis and Lemmon witnessed an organized crime murder, and scared, they fled the state disguised as women, experiencing a variety of misadventures together. In addition to a number of other awards and nominations, "Some Like it Hot" garnered Wilder a 1960 Academy Award nomination for Best Director, and Lemmon a nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role. The film won the Oscar in 1960 for Best Costume Design, Black-and-White.
6. While hosting Thanksgiving dinner for her friends, Susan experienced a problem that required the assistance of a professional tradesman. Comedian Rodney Dangerfield guest starred as Artie, and responded to Susan's urgent service call. What was Artie's profession?

Answer: Appliance repairman

Susan's oven failed while she was preparing the holiday meal, leaving her with a raw, ice-cold turkey. Artie was the only appliance repairman Susan could get to respond on Thanksgiving Day. Rodney Dangerfield's classic catch phrase, "I get no respect" was just as true for his character Artie: he keeled over dead while trying to fix Susan's stove.
7. In the first season finale, "I'll See That and Raise You Susan", Jack was involved in a high-stakes poker game with an old friend, Cooper Elliott. The episode featured cameo appearances by several famous men, all of whom played poker with Jack and Cooper. Who was NOT one of the guest stars in this episode?

Answer: Robert Stack

Jack and Cooper played poker with billionaire Donald Trump, tennis pro John McEnroe, and Mr. T of "The A-Team" fame. They were also joined in the game by Willie L. Brown (the mayor of San Francisco from 1995-2003). Robert Stack did make a cameo appearance during the first season of the series, but it was in a different episode, "What a Card". Mr. T also had another cameo on "Suddenly Susan", in the episode "Hoop Dreams".
8. Late in the third season, Susan entered the political arena and campaigned for a local elected office. Her opponent was a flamboyant professional wrestler, who boasted about his 24-inch biceps (which he called "pythons"). Name the famous professional wrestler who played this cameo role.

Answer: Hulk Hogan

Hulk Hogan's real name is Terry Bollea, and according to various Internet sources, he stands 6'8" and weighs 275 pounds. Although no one will ever mistake him for a serious actor, he gave a very funny caricature performance as "Hollywood Hogan", in the two-part episode "In This Corner ... Susan Keane!" The episode first aired in May of 1999, and it was clearly intended to be a humorous jab at wrestler Jesse Ventura, who had been elected governor of the state of Minnesota a few months before, in November of 1998.
9. The television commercial for Susan's ill-fated political campaign was paid for by "Citizens for Star Trek Day".

Answer: True

When Susan's campaign against Hollywood Hogan ran short of funds, she turned to Todd's friend Jerry, the science fiction geek. Jerry had made a financial killing on an initial public stock offering, and was suddenly worth millions. In order to convince Jerry to lend his support, Susan told him she was in favor of creating of an annual "Star Trek Day", and he would be the grand marshall of the event. Jerry ultimately donated $30,000 to finance her campaign's crucial television ad.

At the end of her commercial, an unseen announcer disclosed that it was "paid for by Citizens for Star Trek Day".

This episode marked the final appearance of Kyle T. Heffner as Jerry.
10. During its four-season run from 1996 to 2000, "Suddenly Susan" was nominated for a variety of awards. Did the series ever win an Emmy, awarded by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences?

Answer: No

"Suddenly Susan" did win a few less prestigious awards, but it never won the coveted Emmy. The series received only two Emmy nominations during its four seasons: Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series (1997, Betty White, for her role in the episode "Golden Girl Friday"), and Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Series (1998, several artisans, for the episode "I Love You, I Think").
