Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Supernanny travels around America giving advice on badly behaved children. How does she travel?

Answer: In a London Black Cab

Supernanny travels in an iconic black cab. She starts the programme inside it, by looking at a portable cd player showing some of the problem behaviours on which parents have asked her advice.
2. What is Supernanny's name?

Answer: Jo Frost

At the beginning of an episode, the children usually call her Supernanny, and some have been known to say "I hate Supernanny", but by the last programme they are usually calling her Jo-Jo.
3. Although circumstances cause occasional changes, how does Supernanny usually spend her first day with a family that need her help?

Answer: Observe all around the house

She observes all the members of the family and talks to each to see what concerns them most so that she can formulate a plan of action specific to that family.
4. On which day does Supernanny begin teaching?

Answer: Day Three

Before she begins showing the parents the right way to cope, she has a family meeting, explaining where they have gone wrong and what needs to be done. In the earlier series, this meeting took place at the end of the first day, but the later shows have placed it on the second day of her involvement and then she goes away for the rest of the day to prepare anything she needs for that specific family.
5. What is discussed at the family meeting before Supernanny begins teaching?

Answer: The problems that need to be tackled.

Supernanny discusses the things she has noted while on observation and the problems that are posed by each child and sometimes the problems that have been created by the parents. She explains what should to be done to solve them.
6. What does Supernanny say should immediately follow bad behaviour?

Answer: Consequences

Supernanny says that children must learn that every action of theirs has a consequence. In the case of bad behaviour, this may be a time out, but not necessarily. There are other ways of dealing with the problem, especially with older children.
7. Time out is when the child taken from its previous activities and put where it can think about its bad behaviour. For how long does Supernanny recommend that a child should be placed in time out?

Answer: One minute for every year of their age

One minute for each year for the child's age means that the older children have longer to think about what they have done. Very young children cannot concentrate for any longer and so a shorter time is more appropriate.
8. What should always precede a time out?

Answer: A warning to stop bad behaviour

A child should be given the opportunity to choose to change its behaviour. A warning tells the child that its behaviour is not acceptable and needs to change. If the bad behaviour stops, there is no need for a time out. The time out follows if it refuses to change.

The threat of punishment is not the same as a warning of consequences for continued bad behaviour because the threat does not encourage the child to rethink its behaviour, only to stop in order to avoid punishment.
9. How should a time out finish?

Answer: With an apology from the child and hugs and kisses

A child should learn that bad behaviour needs an apology, but then hugs and kisses show that all is dealt with and forgiven. It reinforces the the child's understanding that parent still loves him or her.
10. In which country was the first series of Supernanny filmed?

Answer: United Kingdom

This program was first filmed in the UK and shown there in 2004. With a two year break, it has continued with more series in both the UK and the USA for over ten years and has a large group of viewers. There is plenty of information about the programmes and the advice Jo Frost gives, on the Internet, including pages from other specialists who advise different methods of child care.
