Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Provenance"- This episode revolves around a haunted painting. When was this painting, of the Merchant family, created?

Answer: 1910

The creepy painting of the Merchants was passed on after the family's demise. It was said that Isaiah Merchant, a barber, murdered his wife, two sons, and adopted daughter by cutting their throats with a straight razor. The painting went on to cause the deaths of anyone who owned it, with documented deaths in 1912, 1945, and 1970.

It was in 1620 that the Pilgrims arrived in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
2. "Provenance"- Who owned the auction house that sold the Merchant painting to the Telescas, and later to a lady named Evelyn?

Answer: Daniel Blake

Daniel Blake did not appreciate the "Connors" (Sam and Dean) crashing his private auction of the Telesca estate. Sam and Dean did not know what they were looking for, but suspected one of the Telescas' possessions caused their death. It is at the auction house that the Winchesters met Sarah Blake, whom Sam made a connection with. Taylor Cole played Sarah, Eric created "Supernatural" and David directed this episode.
3. "Provenance"- Sarah gave Sam the provenances he asked for after their dinner date.

Answer: True

The Winchesters asked Daniel Blake for them first, when they first met him and his daughter Sarah. But, Daniel refused, as the Connors were not on his guest list. After their date, Sarah provided Sam with the info he needed. These provenances led Sam and Dean to believe the painting was the item they were looking for.

The term provenance means both a place of origin and a proof of authenticity.
4. "Provenance"- Whose clues led Sam, Dean and Sarah to the Merchant family mausoleum?

Answer: Isaiah

The men figured out that the painting had changed over time. They began to suspect that Isaiah (whom they still believed to be the killer) was changing the painting for a reason. It was true. Isaiah had turned his head toward his daughter Melanie, showed the open straight razor (vs closed originally), and changed the painting within the painting to one of their family mausoleum.

The key to stopping the murders was in that crypt. The trio discovered that Isaiah's body had not been interned as first believed, but had been buried in a pauper's grave by the family. During the scene in Evelyn's house where they discussed the changing painting, Dean called his brother Jared, instead of Sam.

The closed captioning still shows Sam, but Jensen Ackles made a mistake and called him Jared, which is his real name.
5. "Provenance"- What item held the key to stopping Melanie Merchant on her murder spree from beyond the grave?

Answer: her doll

Sarah brought it to Sam's attention that dolls were made into the likenesses of their owners way back then. Many times the dolls even had the real hair from their owners. Sam told Dean to go back to the mausoleum and destroy the doll. It worked too, when Dean burned the doll, Melanie disappeared from the room and went back into the painting. Upon further investigation, they found out that Melanie came to be adopted by the Merchant family after her family had been murdered in their sleep. What a creepy child! Jodelle Ferland played Melanie.

She can also be seen in an episode of "Kingdom Hospital" and the first episode of "Dead Like Me".
6. "Dead Man's Blood"- Who was the old man in Colorado with the special pistol?

Answer: Daniel Elkins

Daniel Elkins was an old acquaintance of John Winchester. He was killed by a group of vampires who had his scent. Sam and Dean found a message scratched in the floor of his cabin, which lead them to a post office box with a letter inside.
7. "Dead Man's Blood"- What was the name of the lead male vampire, whom Kate had a romantic relationship with?

Answer: Luther

When Luther found out that Kate, Hank, and the others had killed Daniel, he became upset. He told her that Daniel's murder would lead other hunters to them. She clearly had no idea of the impact of what she'd done, and thought it would make Luther happy. It did not, and eventually led to Luther's death. Warren Christie played Luther, and also starred in "October Road".
8. "Dead Man's Blood"- According to John Winchester, the special pistol had a legend to go with it. Which was NOT a piece of the legend?

Answer: only seven bullets were made, and five were shot, before it disappeared

This pistol was said to be able to kill anything, man, beast, or other. Halley's Comet was in the sky in 1835, the same night many men died in defense of the Alamo. This legendary demon hunter was like Sam, Dean and John, except he rode horseback. Thirteen bullets were made for the gun, and only six were fired, before the demon hunter and gun disappeared. John used one more bullet to kill Luther.
9. "Dead Man's Blood"- John explained the myths about vampire lore to his sons. Which fact about vampires IS true?

Answer: they have to be decapitated to be killed

Stakes can't hurt them, sunlight hurts but does not kill, crosses do not repel them, they do have a blood lust, and once they get your scent- they have it for life. Kate had Daniel's scent and that is how she knew him after years of aging. John said that they'd have to be-head the vamps to kill them, which we see both him and Dean do. John cut off Hank's head when he kidnapped Kate, and Dean cut the head off of another vampire who was guarding the "nest".
10. "Dead Man's Blood"- Kate finds Dean along the road. She offers to take him home with her. Fill in the blank to Dean's response: "I'll pass. I usually draw the line at ______."

Answer: necrophilia

She then attacked Dean, while John shot an arrow into her from behind. The arrow was poisoned with dead man's blood, which left her sick and sleepy. Then, John used Kate as bait to lure out Luther, in order to make a trade for the special pistol. Luther set down the gun, but when John went to pick it up, Kate hit him. A fight ensued and John tested out the special pistol on Luther.
