Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the 1976-1985 CBS television comedy series "Alice," Vic Tayback starred in the role he played in the 1974 movie "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore." What was the name of the restaurant in which he cooked and Alice worked?

Answer: Mel's Diner

Victor "Vic" Tayback (1930-1990) was a veteran actor in both film and television. He played the role of Mel Sharples, the owner and chef of Mel's Diner. He also had roles in the "Love Boat", "Star Trek" and "Hawaii Five-O".
2. This Swedish Chef was responsible for adding the phrase "Bork, bork, bork" to the American vocabulary. On what television show did he appear?

Answer: The Muppet Show

The muppet of the Swedish Chef requires two puppeteers to operate and shows the actual hands of one puppeteer as he must be able to grasp cooking implements in many of his scenes. In 2005, the US Postal Service honoured Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppets, and the Swedish Chef was depicted on his own commemorative postage stamp.
3. In the television series "M*A*S*H" (1972-1983), actor Jeff Maxwell appeared in 66 episodes as the mess cook who served chow to the other characters (and absorbed their abuse and contempt for the food). He doubled as the bartender in the officers' club. What was this character's name?

Answer: Igor Straminsky

Private Straminsky was well known ('tho not well liked) for creaming the corn which Father Mulcahy grew, to which everyone was looking forward to eating on the cob. Jeff Maxwell is the author of a cookbook: "Secrets of The M*A*S*H Mess: The Lost Recipes of Private Igor (Cumberland House Publishing, 1997).
4. On the television series "Star Trek: Voyager," a Talaxian is rescued, joins the crew and takes over the mess hall on the ship. What is this curious character's name?

Answer: Neelix

As self-appointed Chief Morale Office, Neelix seeks to cheer up crew members by cooking dishes from each crew member's home planet. He is also an innovative cook, although not all of his efforts are received with universal appreciation.
5. Jerome "Chef" McElroy, an elementary school cafeteria worker, appeared regularly on the Comedy Central television series "South Park." Who provided the voice of Chef?

Answer: Isaac Hayes

Hayes voiced Chef from 1997 until 2006 when a dispute over the show's satirization of Scientology, which Hayes practiced, resulted in his decision to leave the show.
6. On the CBS television series "Northern Exposure" (1990-95), many of the residents of Cicely, Alaska, ate food prepared by Holling Vincouer at The Brick. What was the name of the reclusive, barefoot, possibly-autistic recurring character played by Adam Arkin who was a master gourmet chef?

Answer: Adam

Arkin appeared as Adam in ten of the 110 episodes of the show and directed one. Adam's culinary skills come to center stage in three episodes: "Roots" where he becomes chef at The Brick, "The Big Feast" where he is hired by Maurice to prepare a huge supper, and "Northern Hospitality" where he prepares the meal for his own dinner party.
7. On "The Gilmore Girls," Lorelai Gilmore has an off-and-on relationship with Luke Danes, the chef-owner of the restaurant in which Lorelai and her daughter Rory often eat. What is the name of his restaurant?

Answer: Luke's Diner

The character of Luke was played by Scott Patterson. In the series, he had been raised by his father who operated a hardware store in the building where Luke went on to conduct his restaurant business.
8. On the HBO series "The Sopranos," who was the chef-owner of Nuovo Vesuvio, a restaurant where the mobsters celebrated birthdays, held meetings and, on one occasion, planned to execute a "hit"?

Answer: Arthur "Artie" Bucco, Jr.

In the series, Artie was both the son and the grandson of a chef. While not himself an organized criminal, he was close to Tony Soprano as they had grown up together. He was played by John Ventimiglia.
9. Lenny Henry played off-type to create the maniacal English chef/owner in the BBC production of the culinary comedy series "Chef!" (1993-1996). What was the name of his Michelin two-star restaurant?

Answer: Le Chateau Anglais

This short-lived but excellent series produced only 20 episodes which were seen over its three-year run. They are available on DVD and well worth it.
10. Based on a popular book of the same name by Anthony Bourdain, which television sit-com followed (briefly) the career of Jack Bourdain in his attempt to make a go of a restaurant called Nolita?

Answer: Kitchen Confidential

Thirteen episodes of this 2005 program were produced. Fox aired two of them and then interrupted the series with coverage of baseball games. Two more episodes were shown before the series was cancelled by the network. All thirteen episodes are available on DVD.
