Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the season seven episode "Crime Wave at Buffalo Springs," the inept sheriff was certain Trampas was this notorious outlaw.

Answer: Bull McCoy

Interestingly, the wanted poster of Bull McCoy featured a Trampas lookalike with a mustache, but Doug McClure did not wear a mustache in season seven. He added the mustache for his changed look in the revamped format of season nine when it was retitled "The Men from Shiloh."

John Wesley Hardin is the only real person in this list. The other two names are fictitious characters from two previous episodes of the series.
2. What was the occupation of the title character in "The Lady from Wichita" before she moved to Medicine Bow?

Answer: saloon keeper

Joan Collins played the part of Lorna Marshall who inherited a ranch near Medicine Bow. Only Trampas knew about her past life as a saloon keeper in Wichita until her secret was revealed at the end of the episode.
3. In the comedy episode "Big Tiny," who or what was the title character?

Answer: an unwelcome suitor a young woman was trying to discourage

Trampas and David went to Durango to purchase a bull. Comedy ensued when David agreed to pose as Martha Carson's fiancé to discourage Tiny Morgan, her determined suitor. Tiny, played by Roger Torrey, was a sizable man. Julie Sommars played Martha.
4. Which star of the series did not wear a hairpiece?

Answer: Doug McClure

John McIntire and James Drury covered their receding hairlines with toupees, and Jeanette Nolan's long braid was most certainly an addition to her own hair. Doug McClure's full head of hair was real.
5. Who played the sheriff of Medicine Bow in the series?

Answer: Ross Elliott

Ross Elliott played sheriff Mark Abbott. L. Q. Jones was Shiloh ranch hand Belden. Clu Gulager played deputy Emmett Ryker. Roy Engel appeared in several episodes as rancher Barney Wingate.
6. Actor Tim McIntire guest starred in "The Death Wagon" and "Nora." To which regular cast member was he related?

Answer: He was Jeanette Nolan's son

He was also John McIntire's son. Not only did McIntire and Nolan play husband and wife Clay and Holly Grainger on the show, they were also married in real life. They had two children, Tim and Holly McIntire. Daughter Holly was also an actor.
7. What was the name of the hotel in Medicine Bow?

Answer: The Grand Teton Hotel

The building was prominently marked in scenes from several episodes.
8. Over the course of four seasons, Elizabeth Grainger experienced multiple traumatic events. Which of the following did not happen to her?

Answer: She contracted scarlet fever from an escaped prisoner

The mine cave-in occurred in "Storm Over Shiloh" in season seven. A head injury resulted in her loss of sight in "A Vision of Blindness," also from season seven. The kidnapping episode happened in season six's "The Reckoning." She thought she had been exposed to scarlet fever in "The Death Wagon" from season six, but the prisoner who used Elizabeth to make his escape was faking his illness. Tim McIntire played the prisoner.
9. In the season three episode "The Hero," how did unscrupulous men try to extort money from Judge Garth?

Answer: by revealing he had profited from a ruling he made on a court case

Prominent politicians were considering backing Judge Garth for political office, and the blackmailers gambled that he would pony up hush money to preempt their mudslinging. He surprised them by refusing to play their game.
10. In "Dark Corridor," the name of the traumatized woman The Virginian rescued was not revealed until the end of the show. What was her name?

Answer: Dulcie

The woman suffered amnesia, and the only clue to her identity was an article of her clothing marked with the initial "D." When all was resolved and The Virginian was telling her goodbye in the final scene, he called her Dulcie.
