John Boy gets hit by a piece of wood and is thrown against a pile of lumber. He suffers a head injury which turns out to be far more serious than anyone realizes.

Answer: Going to take a scholarship exam for college

In this episode, John Boy is going to register for college and take a scholarship exam. The only way he will afford college is by winning a scholarship and working.

Answer: His vision worsens and he is unable to take the exam.

John Boy's symptoms have been getting worse since the accident. His vision blurs and he cannot read the exam. He runs out of the room. The registrar, Miss Monsell takes him to the office because he says cannot see well enough to drive. John and Oliva, his parents, take him to see Dr. Vance and then to the hospital. John Boy requires surgery to relieve the pressure in his skull.

Answer: Olivia

Oliva goes into John Boy's room and gets him to open his eyes and he immediately starts talking about the exam he missed. Doctor Vance says John Boy may be able to take the exam some day but not any time soon.

Answer: Miss Hunter

John Boy asks his parents to have Miss Hunter talk to Miss Monsell. Miss Hunter persuades Miss Monsell to ask the university to give permission for John Boy to take the exam in his hospital. Permission is granted and John Boy takes the exam and gets the scholarship.

Answer: Ben

Ben tell Grandpa he wants to have something do like everyone else in the family does. Grandpa takes Ben on the mountain to shoot the turkey but Ben is impatient
He shoots at the turkey too soon and the turkey takes off. Grandpa tells him he will do a better job next year. Ben makes a trade for the turkey with Mr. Higgins.

Answer: They want to adopt Jason.

It comes to Olivia as a complete shock that Jason has been working for the Baldwins to make more of the recipe which is really moonshine. Olivia is absolutely furious that John gave his permission. Obviously, the Baldwins won't be able to adopt Jason.

They wanted to adopt Jason to carry on the family line and were willing to pay for his education etc. In spite of her anger, Olivia invites Miss Mamie and Miss Emily to Thanksgiving dinner. Later, John calms Olivia down and helps her find the humor in the Baldwins wanting to adopt Jason.

Answer: Dr. Vance

The Waltons and their guests sit down to Thanksgiving dinner but John Boy is not present. They hear a car pull up and in walks Dr. Vance and John Boy. Of course, the family is excited and everyone jumps up to greet him. Grandpa offers grace again and his prayer includes giving thanks for John Boy coming home safely.

Answer: Grandma and Grandpa

Grandma and Grandpa are dressed in their Sunday clothes and are sitting in a pew together. Grandma offers a prayer aloud asking God to help John Boy.

Answer: Miss Hunter

Miss Hunter serves as proctor because she is a licensed teacher.
