Richard Dean Anderson is an actor, producer and composer best known for playing the role of MacGyver in the TV series of the same name. He has also appeared in movies such as "Through the Eyes of a Killer" and "Firehouse", and later in the TV series "Stargate: SG1". He was born in Minnesota and has Norwegian, Scottish and Swedish ancestry.

He made a hole in the wall and discovered the baggage conveyor belt was right beside the room. He attached one end of the wire coat hangers to the old wooden chair and the other end to a join in the conveyor belt, forcing the chair through the wall and creating a hole big enough to escape through - on the baggage conveyor belt.

Answer: He put the map under the door, dislodged the key onto it and pulled it back into the room

He later slid down a sand dune on the map before escaping in a hot air balloon. When the baddies shot a hole in the balloon, he patched it up by taping on the map!
