Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who calls George a "wuss"?

Answer: Lloyd

Viewers can infer that Lloyd from George's office is a co-worker at Rick Bahr Properties and not in fact the Lloyd Braun character, George's long-time nemesis, who first appears much later in "The Non-Fat Yogurt". Lloyd calls George a wuss because he is too nervous to ask out the woman who smiles at him.

This is what eventually spurs him to call Carol. The gag is again used later in the episode when Jerry agrees to switch the answering machine tapes after George calls him a wuss. This brick-joke-type humour is used extensively throughout the series and although a very minor example of the technique, it is still a noteworthy one which demonstrates its effectiveness (and why "Seinfeld" ruled!).
2. How many pairs of underwear does George have?

Answer: 40

George tells Carol that he owns 40 pairs because he dislikes doing laundry and even aims to have over three hundred and sixty pairs so that he only has to do a wash once a year! At least George sets himself achievable goals...
3. On which day of the week does George tell Elaine he plans to call his date?

Answer: Wednesday

Feeling embarrassed that he turned down Carol's invitation upstairs, having not realized that "coffee" was not really "coffee", George is hesitant to call the day after their date (Sunday). Elaine thinks George should ring her but he says that he is "planning a Wednesday call". Soon enough though, he musters enough confidence and decides to call anyway.

In fact, subsequent to this initial call, George phones everyday up to Wednesday when, having still not heard from Carol, he "lets fly like Mussolini from the balcony"!
4. Who said, "Values are very important"?

Answer: Donna

Back at Jerry's apartment after the movies, Donna says this in response to Jerry's comment that it's common courtesy to leave a suicide note. According to him, "That's just the way I was brought up."
5. What is the main topic of Jerry's opening monologue?

Answer: How the people on TV are always doing something better than you

Jerry's stand-up monologues are usually related to the storylines and this one is no exception. In his opening monologue he talks about the unrealistic enthusiasm of soda commercial people and advertisements in general. This is a fitting segue into the first half of the episode which, among other things, shows how people may divide or unite depending on their perceptions of something as silly as a Cotton Dockers commercial! Jerry deals with "The scrutiny that couples put each other through on a date" in his second monologue of the episode and the other two incorrect choices are from his closing stand-up routine.

In "Behind The Scenes", it is revealed that the Cotton Dockers idea came from Seinfeld's real-life dislike of that particular commercial.
6. Elaine tells Jerry that she once broke up with a guy due to his dirty bathroom. She jokes that "germs were building a town" in his tub. What value does she say were "houses by the drain"?

Answer: $150,000

It could be a new edition of a popular board game - "Microbial Monopoly" perhaps? Only Kramer would... Anyway, clean bathrooms seem to be an odd expression of love for "Seinfeld" characters: In the first episode, Jerry laments that he forgot to clean the bathroom before having Laura over. Also, in "The Mango", Jerry asks George, who is unsure whether he likes Karin, if he cleans the tub when expecting her at his place.

After admitting that he does, Jerry confirms that "tub is love".
7. In this episode, Elaine appears in only one scene at Jerry's apartment. What is she eating/drinking at the start of this scene?

Answer: Lollipop

The scene begins with Jerry and Elaine discussing trivial reasons for breaking up with people, including Jerry's qualm about dating someone who likes the Cotton Dockers commercial. There is a bowl of popcorn on the table but Elaine is clearly eating a lollipop. George then enters with a box of effervescent antacid and what is most likely Pepto-Bismol.

Not long after, Elaine discards the lollipop.
8. Where, according to George, do the people who actually have coffee as late as 12 A.M. work?

Answer: NORAD

George thinks that "coffee" is literally "coffee" only when offered in the morning - Carol's invitation up for coffee at twelve o'clock at night on the other hand, must have been euphemistic. Elaine says that some people do have coffee that late, in an attempt to reassure an anxious, volatile George.

He, however, disqualifies the comment: "Yeah, people who work at NORAD, who're on twenty-four hour missile watch." Critics Mike Flaherty and Mary Kaye Schilling encapsulated the spirit of the George-driven episode well: "The first of two consecutive and classic George angst-fests, as Jason Alexander - master of frantic venom - begins to make the character his own."
9. What adjective does George use to describe the song "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?"?

Answer: Lovely

A show tune from "The Sound of Music" (the 1959 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical), the song is George's second choice as a signal to prevent Carol from catching Jerry while he switches the tapes. Disliking George's first selection, "Tippy Toe", Jerry suggests the song "Lemon Tree", upon which they finally settle.

When George names Peter, Paul and Mary as the performer of "Lemon Tree", Jerry corrects him: "No, Trini Lopez". However, they are both correct in that both artists, along with many others, recorded it, a song based on the tune of a Brazilian folk song and written by Will Holt in the 1960s.

It was first popularized by Brazilian singer Wilson Simonal and later by Trini Lopez whose version was the most successful. When the time came to use the signal, George forgets the signal anyway and initially shouts "Tippy Toe!" The idea of switching the tapes was Larry David's, inspired by his own experiences of leaving phone messages which would become cause of many break-ups.

He had included this story in a sketch while working at "Saturday Night Live" but since it was never used, he was free to incorporate it into "Seinfeld".
10. George insists that Jerry, Elaine and Kramer must first leave in order for him to call his date at Jerry's apartment. After they exit, what else does George do next before placing the call?

Answer: Takes his jacket off

George also rolls up the sleeves of his shirt to put himself more at ease before calling Carol. Of course, in order to cover his nervousness he would just rather eat an apple over the phone but Jerry tells him, "That's enough already with the apples."
