Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Inspector Fowler, the 'thin blue line' is the barrier between which two forces?

Answer: Order and chaos

'And never forget that in the grand order of life there are but two forces - those of order and those of chaos. And between them lies us, the thin blue line.' The thin blue line is a term used by police to define their role in society.
2. To which character is Inspector Fowler referring when he states 'the only difference being that your part of the thin blue line is slightly thicker'?

Answer: Constable Kevin Goody

Goody is definitely the thickest part of the thin blue line but the other candidates are not far behind! According to Constable Goody there are three forces, the forces of order and chaos and 'us in the middle, the Police Force'.
3. Who is the writer, according to the credits at the beginning of the show?

Answer: Ben Elton

Ben Elton gets the credit officially but I am sure there must have been considerable input from Rowan Atkinson. Atkinson and Richard Curtis have co-written many projects including 'Blackadder' and 'Mr Bean'.
4. In which village or town is the show set?

Answer: Gasforth

To quote Inspector Fowler: 'Gasforth - it's not as bad as you think'. According to one reviewer (Claire Bickley of the Toronto Sun), the name is appropriate: 'mouths open, gas comes forth'. The reviewer was unimpressed with this show but it's one of my favourites.
5. In the first episode of 'The Thin Blue Line', it is the 10th anniversary of Raymond and Patricia's relationship. She mistakenly thinks Raymond has bought her a present. Who has Raymond bought a gift for?

Answer: The Queen

The first episode is called 'The Queen's Birthday Present'. Raymond's reasons are 'the Queen is in effect our boss. And compared to many bosses she is a model employer. She does not attempt to kiss the secretaries at the Christmas party. She does not insist on having the best coffee mug, or hogging all the chocolate Hobnobs'.
6. In the first series, Kevin Allen plays DC Cray. In the second series, who is Cray's character replaced by?

Answer: DC Gary Boyle

Mark Addy plays DC Gary Boyle. Addy is also well known for his role as Dave in 'The Full Monty' (one of my favourite movies).
7. 'It's my backside on the line and I'm right up to my neck in it.' 'The uniform constable is obsolete. Extinct. Like the doo-doo.' Which character is responsible for these statements?

Answer: DI Derek Grim

Grim is constantly mixing his metaphors and mangling the mother tongue. Another of his gems was 'All I know is my arse will be on the line and I don't want a cock-up.'
8. Many of Atkinson's co-stars have appeared with him in other productions. Rudolph Walker (Constable Gladstone) appeared in a 'Mr Bean' episode where he portrayed an examination supervisor. Which other regular cast member appeared with Atkinson in 'Four Weddings and a Funeral'?

Answer: David Haig

David Haig plays DI Derek Grim, head of CID. Rudolph Walker plays Constable Gladstone, the oldest officer at Gasforth Police Station. James Dreyfus plays Constable Kevin Goody and Kevin Allen is DC Bob Cray.
9. In the press release distributed by the BBC prior to the first showing in November 1995, whose relationship is described as follows? 'But that love is unrequited, something (he) can't even spell, let alone come to terms with.'

Answer: Constable Habib and Constable Goody

Constable Goody is in love with Constable Habib. Goody's attempts to impress her rarely succeed. Habib's assessment of Goody: (1) 'You know, two's company and he's a berk' and (2) 'It was something she said. She said 'Kevin, I hate you. I think you're a pranny'.' Pranny is a slang term meaning idiot.
10. In the second series Lucy Robinson appears in several episodes as the Mayoress, Dame Christobel Wickham, who went to school with Raymond. What was Inspector Fowler's nickname at school, according to the Mayoress?

Answer: Feely

'We haven't had a private meeting since school. Do you think your hands would have warmed up by now, Feely?' The mayoress frequently accuses Raymond of such boyish pranks as trying to get into her briefs, much to the chagrin of Sgt Pat Dawkins who refers to Dame Christobel as a 'stuck up tart' on more than one occasion.
