"The Bob Newhart Show" ran from 1972 to 1978. It featured the comedian as psychiatrist Robert Hartley, who dealt with an array of odd characters. One of the oddest was Elliott Carlin, played by Jack Riley, who appeared in 49 episodes. Mr Carlin was known for his wide range of odd phobias. Jack Riley died in August 2016.

Emil Peterson (John Fiedler) appeared in 19 episodes. Howard Borden (Bill Daily) was the Hartley's next door neighbor, who appeared in almost every episode. Carol Kester (Marcia Wallace) was the wise-cracking receptionist, who was also in almost every episode.

Eliott Carlin appears in the 1985 "St Elsewhere" episode "Close Encounters."

Larry (William Sanderson), Darryl (Tony Papenfuss) and Darryl (John Volstad) were a running gag throughout the eight year run of "Newhart" (1982-90). Larry was the only brother who spoke, telling wild stories about the brothers' misadventures. The trio appeared in 91 of the show's 184 episodes.

Dick (Bob Newhart) and Joanna (Mary Frann) Louden were the central characters on "Newhart". Michael was played by Peter Scolari, flighty maid Stephanie was played by Julia Duffy, and handyman George Utley was played by Tom Poston.
