Barry was the first name of the actor who played Matt Camden, Barry Watson. The Camden children from oldest to youngest are Matt, Mary, Lucy, Simon, Ruthie, Sam and David. Throughout the series the Camden family household was home to a few other "children", Martin, and Robbie are considered, "pseudo-Camdens."

Newport Beach is the actual setting for the series. Most of the filming locations are located in Redondo Beach and the Torrance area. The filming location for the Bait Shop, and the coffeehouse featured in the series is King Harbor at Redondo Beach.

Karen and Nathan were never a couple. Nathan was with Haley throughout most of the series. Karen did have a relationship with Keith before his untimely death. Ashley was portrayed by India Eisley. Ashley was the first person to notice that Amy looked pregnant and when she confronted her sister, the suspicion turned out to be true. Ashley was forced to write a diary by her middle school principal as a way to express herself, and to "hopefully" prevent her from violating the school dress code again.

After it is discovered that Amy is pregnant, Ashley lied to her parents about having sex in an attempt to try to keep Amy's secret.
