Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Hey, kids, what time is it?" Well, of course it's "Howdy Doody" time. What was the name of the cantankerous old character who was a thorn in everyone's side on this early kids' favorite?

Answer: Phineas T. Bluster

Buffalo Bob was the host but he wasn't grouchy. Other characters included Clarabelle and Princess Summer Fall Winter Spring. And where did all the kids sit? Too easy - the Peanut Gallery.
2. This cartoon character required your help each week, usually in times of crisis. Can you name this early experiment in interactive TV?

Answer: Winky Dink

Parents could send away for a Winky Dink "magic" screen that fit over the TV screen. When Winky got to the edge of the cliff it was your job, Crayolas at the ready, to draw a bridge to safety. Needless to say, dad wasn't too happy to find crayon marks on the TV screen after the dog chewed up Winky's magic screen.
Bonus questions: who was Twinks Tvett and in what movie would you hear the term winky tink? (Mary Richards friend, Paper Moon)
3. Whose best friend was Ragland T. Tiger, also known as Rags?

Answer: Crusader Rabbit

A pretty good series for its time, it taught that even a talking rabbit dressed in crusader's garb was a wellspring of good fun.
4. "Captain Kangaroo" was on the air for years and years. What was the name of the talking timepiece on the show?

Answer: Grandfather Clock

You might also remember Bunny Rabbit, Mr. Moose and of course, Mr. Greenjeans.
5. What was unusual about the animated series, "Clutch Cargo"?

Answer: characters' mouths were human

To save on animation costs, human mouths were superimposed over still images of characters. Only the mouths moved. The problem? Whenever Clutch spoke in profile he was talking out of his chin.
6. On what cartoon series would you meet Vincent Van Gopher and Muskrat?

Answer: Deputy Dawg

Who can ever forget these immortal lines spoken by Deputy Dawg himself: "Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, if the blackberry mint julep with the persimmon sap don't get you, the miseries must." Words that shaped an entire generation.
7. Mr. Peabody, a well-spoken canine, and his pet human, Sherman, traveled back in time to famous historical events. What was the name of the fantastic machine used to do this?

Answer: the Way-Back Machine

Exceedingly droll, these cartoon characters were regulars on "Rocky and Bullwinkle". The jokes appealed to all ages.
8. Who was the evil nemesis of Tom Terrific?

Answer: Crabby Appleton

Master Cylinder was the nemesis of Felix the Cat, Mush mouth was a character on "Fat Albert" and Braniac - he was someone's nemesis. Anyone remember?
9. "M-I-C (see ya real soon) K-E-Y (Why? Because we like you!) M-O-U-S-E". What was the name of the rotund artist on the orginal "Mickey Mouse Club"?

Answer: Roy

Jimmie Dodd was the host, Roy the silent sketch artist and Annette our first lesson in human physiology.
10. "The Flintstones", it has been pointed out, is simply a knockoff of "The Honeymooners". What cartoon series was a knockoff of "The Phil Silvers Show"?

Answer: Top Cat

Top Cat (TC to his fellow felines) lived in an alley. Like Ernie Bilko, TC was a scamming neer-do-well.
