Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who turned Caroline Forbes over to her father to be tortured?

Answer: Carol Lockwood

After a steamy night between her and Tyler Lockwood, Caroline was shot with Vervain by Carol, Tyler's mom. Carol called Caroline's dad, one of the town's original descendants and trained to believe all vampires were bad. He isolated his daughter in a dungeon like setting, and tried to use negative reinforcement to rid her of her urge to drink blood. Tyler got the truth out of his mother, and then got Caroline's mom to help rescue her in episode three, "The End of the Affair". Jack Coleman played Caroline's father, Bill Forbes.
2. Klaus compelled Stefan to forget the time they spent together in 1920s Chicago.

Answer: True

Stefan fell for Klaus' younger sister, Rebekah, as the two men became fast friends and companion killers. At the time, they also came to know a powerful witch named Gloria. In the present, Klaus returned to Chicago with Stefan, whose mind was blank of their prior involvement. Stefan did remember Gloria, who'd magically kept herself young.

She admitted it would not last forever, but she only looked about 25 years older than he had in the 1920s, instead of being dead. Gloria told Klaus she'd need Rebekah to do a spell to retrieve the original witch's spirit and help him discover why he couldn't successfully create the hybrids. Klaus went on to explain to Stefan about their past shenanigans and finally revealed he'd compelled Stefan to forget about it all until he decided to remind him.

At the end of "The End of the Affair", Klaus lifted the forgetting compulsion and Stefan remembered everything. On a side note, Klaus was using the first part of his name back then. Everyone called him Nick.
3. Who did Klaus turn into a vampire on Senior Prank Night?

Answer: Tyler

Klaus was determined to get Bonnie's help with his hybrid problem. So, he grabbed Tyler, fed him his blood and then broke his neck. He gave Team Elena no choice but to help him, and they did. In the end, they did not offer much to the cause, but Klaus figured out that Elena's blood would keep his hybrids alive. So, Tyler was saved from death, and became Klaus' first successful hybrid. Also in "The Reckoning", Jeremy helped Katherine and Damon learn about Mikael, Klaus' only fear. Mikael was said to be a vampire hunter who was also a vampire himself. And, Matt committed suicide in order to talk to his dead sister. Bonnie was able to save his life, but he could still see Vicki afterward.
4. In episode eight, "Ordinary People", Rebekah recalled the story of her origins with Elena. Who did Rebekah say killed her mother?

Answer: her father, Mikael

After the ghost of Mason Lockwood (whom Damon referred to as the Ghost of Christmas Past) led Damon into a cave filled with cryptic drawings, he vanished (thank you Bonnie) before he could reveal anything about what he'd found. So, Elena and Alaric both took a peek at the drawings. Alaric took a lot of pictures and went back and studied them. Meanwhile, Elena elicited a conversation from Klaus' sister Rebekah about the family's origins into vampirism. One of her revelations was that her father, vampire and vampire hunter Mikael, killed her in a heightened fit of jealous rage.

It had been their mother who'd turned the entire clan into vampires, save herself. Rebekah explained she'd done it to save them from the werewolves who lived in the area, but as a witch Esther could not become a vampire herself, as it was an abomination. Elena realized shortly afterward, based on the cave drawings, that Klaus was the one who'd killed Esther.

This news could possibly result in Rebekah turning her allegiance away from Klaus. Side note- the witch, Ayana, refused to do the spell, and that is why Esther had to do it herself.
5. Klaus and his family were in Mystic Falls before they became vampires.

Answer: True

Rebekah revealed this to Elena, but she'd already figured it out herself based on the cave drawings. On the advice of the witch Ayana, her parents, Mikael and Esther, left the old world after a plague had taken their child's life. After they arrived in what would become the area of Mystic Falls, they had more children and lived peacefully with the werewolves for over twenty years.

Then, Nicklaus (Klaus) and his younger brother watched as the werewolves shifted, which resulted in the attack on young Henrick.

He died, and Esther was determined to save the rest of her family. Not only did she cast a spell on her family, but she was forced to cast a spell on Klaus specifically. After he made his first kill as a vampire, it triggered his werewolf gene. So, she had to bind that power to keep him from transforming.

Afterward, she turned her back on Klaus in penance for her affair with is father. Elena later told Rebekah that rejection, coupled with Klaus' heightened sensitivity to people who disappoint him, caused Klaus to murder his mother.

He ripped her heart from her chest, and told Rebekah it was their father who'd killed her. This was all revealed in "Ordinary People".
6. In "Ordinary People", Elena told Damon that this person would be the one to save Stefan's humanity.

Answer: Damon himself

After a long evening of partying with Stefan, Damon returned to Elena's home and waited for her in her bed. Elena told Damon she was not mad at him for freeing Stefan from his cell. She and the ghost of Lexie had started the routine Lexie had used in the past to rid Stefan of his Ripper persona. Damon finally released Stefan, probably because he knew Klaus' compulsion would prevent it from being successful. Unable to rid Damon from her bed, Elena finally gave up and crawled in beside him.

Elena: "I'm not mad at you for letting him out, Damon. I think that you're gonna be the one to save him from himself. It won't be because he loves me. It'll be because he loves you. . . Can I tell you the rest tomorrow?"

Damon: "Sure."
7. "Homecoming"- In this episode, the ninth of the season, the Homecoming dance was cancelled. Whose house did the party move to after the gym was conveniently flooded?

Answer: Tyler's

Stefan, Damon, Elena and Mikael set up a decent scheme to lure Klaus back to Mystic Falls. Mikael planned to kill Klaus with a stake made from the ancient white ash tree. The ruse was elaborate, as Stefan had been compelled to obey Klaus and was unable to lie to him at all.

The plan worked, but Klaus put in some contingencies to assure he'd live. He'd lived for a thousand years, so there was no real way to completely trick him. An "impromptu" gathering had been arranged at Tyler's house after the gym at school had been flooded. Klaus had arranged for things to unfold where he wanted, and not where his enemies wanted him.
8. "Homecoming"- Elena staked Katherine in order to save Damon's life.

Answer: False

Elena did stake Rebekah in order to assure she would not betray their plan. Rebekah was grieving the loss of Klaus even before his death, which she had helped to orchestrate. After a chat with Damon on the 'trustability' of both Rebekah and Mikael, Elena staked the former with one of the white ash weapons.

She was not truly dead of course, and Elena did what she must, but it was obvious she hadn't enjoying luring the vampire into a false sense of comfort and then staking her. Rebekah had arranged to go to the dance with Matt, so when he arrived to pick her up there was a change of plans. No vampire can use the white ash stake to put down an original, as it would kill that vampire as well.
9. "Homecoming"- Since his original date was unable to go to the dance, who ended up accompanying Matt as his date for the evening?

Answer: Katherine

Katherine was in on the plan to kill Klaus and served as a stand in for Elena. Earlier in the episode Damon admitted to Elena he was working on a side plan, as relying on one plan was not smart. He told her then she wouldn't like it if she knew what it was, and that when it all went down, he wanted Elena far away from it.

When Klaus approached Katherine at the party at Tyler's house, she was obviously nervous, on which he commented. She told him she was not nervous, she just didn't like him. It was revealed near the end, during the execution of the master plan, that it had been Katherine there all night. Elena never left the house.

They would have most likely killed Klaus had Stefan not made a side deal with him, after Katherine warned him. Klaus told her that if he died, his hybrids would kill Damon. So, Stefan saved Klaus, who then killed Mikael, Klaus removed Stefan's compulsion and Stefan left town.
10. "Homecoming"- At the end of the episode, what did Stefan steal from Klaus?

Answer: Klaus' family

After Katherine warned Stefan about Damon's life being in danger, Stefan made his own deal with Klaus to save him from Mikael. In exchange for that loyalty, Klaus agreed to remove the compulsion. Little did Klaus know, but Stefan had two plans. He wanted to regain his free will and save Damon's life, both of which required him to thwart the plan to kill Klaus. Damon and Elena never found out this truth, so they did not realize that Stefan saved Klaus to save Damon. They believed he had done it solely to regain his freedom. At the end, Damon told Elena that they were never going to get Stefan back. So, Elena told Damon if that was true, then they both just needed to let him go. Katherine took Damon out of Mystic Falls with her, but before she left him, she told she needed him to feel again do he could do what she needed him to do next, get mad. The next thing you saw was Stefan phoning Klaus to let him know that it was he who took Klaus' family. Klaus had them all, save for Rebekah, staked and in coffins just waiting for him to wake them again. Klaus had not known his sister had been staked by Elena earlier the night before.
Stefan called and thanked Klaus for his freedom, and then said: "The thing is, it came at too high of a price. You took everything from me Klaus."
Klaus: "Let bygones be bygones, trust me, resentment gets old."
Stefan: "You know what never gets old? Revenge."
Klaus opened the truck that held his family's coffins to find it emptied out.
Klaus: "No."
Stefan: "What's the matter Klaus? Missing something?"
Klaus: "What are you doing?"
Stefan: "Just enjoying my freedom."
Klaus: "I will kill you and everyone you've ever met."
Stefan: "Do that, and you will never see your family again. I wonder Klaus, as someone who's been one step ahead for a thousand years.. Were you prepared for this?"
