Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The students that "Welcome Back Kotter" centered around were known as the Sweathogs. How did they get their name?

Answer: Their class was held on the very top floor of the school

Even back when Gabe Kotter was a Sweathog, the classes were held on the top floor of the high school. It must have been really hot up there because the school was very old and most likely without air conditioning. So it was because the class was held there, they were named the Sweathogs.
2. On the show Mr. Kotter had one brother. What was his brother's name?

Answer: Melvyn

Mr. Kotter had not seen his brother Melvyn since he was five years old. Melvyn was now a high paid doctor.
3. Mr. Kotter was in the service at one time. What branch was he in?

Answer: Army

Mr. Kotter had been a corporal in the U.S. Army.
4. In the season two episode from 1976 titled "Career Day", Mr. Kotter's class had a visit from someone who went on to become a famous actor. He played Mr. Takahashi in this episode. Who was this actor?

Answer: Noriyuki Morita

Noriyuki Morita, AKA Pat Morita, paid the Sweathogs class a visit on career day. His role was Mr. Takahashi the inventor from Chicago. He was impressed with Mr. Kotter so much that he offered him a job with his company at three times his current salary. Of course Kotter didn't accept his offer.
In the early 1960's Pat had a stand-up act for which be billed himself as "The Hip Nip." Once he was doing a nightclub performance for Pearl Harbor survivors in Waikiki and apologized to them for "screwing up your harbor."
5. The very first episode of "Welcome Back Kotter" was titled "The Great Debate." A particular actor guest starred as a teacher named Alex Welles. Who was this actor who later became quite famous?

Answer: James Woods

James Woods played Alex Welles, who was the prissy drama teacher and led the school debate team. The Sweathogs were to debate the school team which they nicknamed the Turkeys. The topic of the debate had to do with humans being naturally aggressive. The Sweathogs were the team that said that yes, humans are naturally aggressive.
Freddie Washington was the first to speak. When the Turkeys speaker Todd offered a rebuttal, the Sweathogs antagonized him so much they he came close to physically assaulting them. The Sweathogs won the debate hands down.
6. In a season two episode titled "The Museum," an actor portrayed the museum curator named Mr. Gore. He was known at the time for his work on television. Who was this actor?

Answer: John Astin

John Astin from the "Addams Family" TV series played the strange, creepy, and superstitious Mr. Gore. Gore is pronounced as if there was an ay at the end of his name and not an e. The Sweathogs were in a room at the museum that was supposed to be for VIPs only but Mr. Gore let them stay anyway. He told them not to touch anything or they would risk the wrath of the Pharaoh.
Mr. Kotter, Julie Kotter, Mr. Woodman, Mr. Gore, and the Sweathogs became trapped in the room with Pugh (Pew) the mummy and all were scared. Epstein with his clowning around, got the door to open so they weren't stuck in there for the entire night.
As they were all leaving Mr. Gore said to them (I'm paraphrasing) "Mr. Kotter, Mr. Woodman was right. The Sweathogs aren't human...but then, neither am I."
7. At the beginning of the series, what grade were the Sweathogs in?

Answer: Tenth

At the beginning of the series the Sweathogs were in the tenth grade. By the end of the series they were in the twelfth grade.
Since the series took place in New York, the school system is a little different than here in the Chicago area. When I moved from New York, the high schools there were three years from grade ten to grade twelve. In the Chicago area high school is from grade nine to grade twelve.
8. Juan Epstein was voted as what by his peers in school?

Answer: Most Likely To Take a Life

Epstein was voted most likely to take a life. After all, he was the toughest kid in school. In later episodes Juan became more of a wiseguy than a fighter.
9. In the "Welcome Back Kotter" episode titled "One of Our Sweathogs Is Missing", the names of two of Juan Epstein's brothers were mentioned. What were their names?

Answer: Pedro and Sanchez

Juan mentioned that his mother had given birth eight times. Pedro and Sanchez were the only brothers mentioned. Juan also had a sister named Carmen that was mentioned and who also appeared on the show.
10. In one of the final episodes of "Welcome Back Kotter" Arnold develops a drinking problem. A new teacher named Mrs. Tremaine tries to help him. What famous singer/actress played Mrs. Tremaine?

Answer: Della Reese

Della Reese played Mrs. Tremaine. To overcome his painful shyness around a girl he liked named Mary, Arnold gets whiskey from Carvelli to make him feel brave. It works a little too well and he becomes mean and nasty. Eventually a drunken Arnold accidentally hurts Mary, which brings him to his senses.
