Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of President Bartlet's grand-daughter?

Answer: Annie

Annie was mentioned in the pilot when the President explained that in an interview for a teen magazine his twelve year old grand-daughter had expressed her views on a woman's right to choose. As a result she had been sent a Raggedy Ann doll with a knife through its throat by an extreme Christian group.
2. Whose baby daughter was called Corey?

Answer: Morris Tolliver

Tolliver, a naval officer, was asked to be the President's personal doctor. His daughter Corey was ten days old and he proudly showed her photograph to the White House staff and to the President. The plane in which Tolliver was travelling to Jordan later that day was shot down by the Syrians.
3. Whose mother had been a police woman?

Answer: Charlie Young

Charlie, when being interviewed by Josh, said that his mother was a police officer who had been shot and killed on duty a few months before. The President later told Charlie that his mother had been killed by a Western .38 Revolver and that they were going to try to get that particular weapon banned. As a result, Charlie became personal aide to the President.
4. Who did Toby say had been the President's tennis partner in a mixed doubles game?

Answer: Steffi Graf

When the President made a substitution in a basketball game with his staff, Toby reminded him that, when playing tennis with himself and C.J., the President tried to tell them that his partner worked at the American Consulate in Vienna. The President admitted that she did bear a striking resemblance to Steffi Graf. Toby's reply was 'It was Steffi Graf, you crazy lunatic! You think I'm not gonna recognize Steffi Graf when she's serving a tennis ball at me?'
5. Eaton and Broderick attached a rider to a Banking Bill to allow strip mining in a wilderness area in Montana. What was the name of the reserve?

Answer: Big Sky

Sam wanted to swallow the rider for the sake of the Bill, but Josh and Toby proposed a veto to show the Banking Committee that they refused to be held hostage by two members. Eventually Josh came up with a solution by which the President, using the Antiquities Act, could designate federal land such as Big Sky to be a National Park.
6. What were the names of Mrs Landingham's sons?

Answer: Andrew and Simon

Mrs Landingham told Charlie about her twin sons who had been medical students when their lottery numbers came up for the draft. Despite their parents' efforts to persuade them to ask for a deferment, they had gone out to Vietnam as medics and both had been killed by enemy fire in Da Nang on Christmas Eve 1970.
7. What was the name of the student who was killed for being gay?

Answer: Lowell Lydell

Lowell Lydell, a seventeen year-old gay student, was beaten to death with sticks and bottles. CJ was concerned about his parents being invited to the signing of a hate-crimes bill because she thought that his father was embarrassed about his son being gay.

She then discovered that Mr Lydell, far from being embarrassed about his son, was furious about the administration's weak position on gay rights.
8. What was the name of the prisoner whose death sentence was not commuted by the President?

Answer: Simon Cruz

Cruz had killed two drug kingpins, his appeal for a stay of execution had been denied and his lawyers were appealing to the White House for a stay of execution. The President battled with his conscience about this, but in the end had to let the judicial decision stand and allow the death sentence to be carried out.
9. Why was the President reluctant to appoint Ron Ehrlich to the chair of the Federal Reserve?

Answer: Ehrlich had been Abbey's boyfriend over thirty years earlier

The President harboured a long jealousy that Ron Ehrlich had once been Abbey's boyfriend. When Abbey publicly declared a preference for Ehrlich as the new Fed chair, Jed was furious. He told her that if he now named Ehrlich, it would look as if he was taking instructions from his wife. This was part of what Jed called their 'first Oval Office fight.'
10. What was the name of Toby's brother?

Answer: David

Dr David Ziegler was a payload specialist aboard a space shuttle which hadn't landed on schedule because one of the payload bays would not close. During the President's speech at the Newseum in Rosslyn, Sam received a message from NASA that the shuttle was returning safely and made a signal to Toby to indicate that everything was fine.
