Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "West Wing" episode 1: "Pilot". In this very eventful season opener, one of the characters who will go on to become a regular nearly gets fired. Who?

Answer: Josh Lyman

Josh gets into trouble by telling a Christian activist: "Lady, the God you pray to is too busy being indicted for tax fraud." The President, meanwhile, has issues of his own after crashing his bicycle into a tree. Sam Seaborn also has an eventful start to the series, unknowingly spending a night with an escort, and accidentally telling his boss' daughter about it.
2. "West Wing" episode 2: "Post Hoc, Ergo Propter Hoc". Against Josh's wishes, a new media consultant is hired in this episode. What is her name?

Answer: Mandy

Josh reluctantly agrees to take Mandy on, under three very interesting conditions. They are that she can't punch him; she can't get drunk at midday (which is what she's doing after losing her only client); and she answers to Josh and Toby.
3. "West Wing" episode 3: "A Proportional Response". We meet Charlie Young in the episode, a character who goes on to become the President's Aide (AKA 'Body man'). What job did Charlie actually apply for?

Answer: Messenger

Josh is so impressed with Charlie's interview that he puts him forward for the aide job (despite Charlie's obvious reluctance). Meanwhile, the title of the episode refers to the response to Syria blowing up a US jet that President Bartlet wants to take; a response that Admiral Fitzwallace describes as "Five thousand dollars worth of punishment for a fifty buck crime".
4. "West Wing" episode 4: "Five Votes Down". The West Wing staff are surprised to learn that a gun control bill is about to get voted down. But do they manage to win the bill by the end of the episode?

Answer: Yes

Leo calls in a favour from John Hoynes, the Vice President, to ensure the bill gets voted up. Leo is also having personal problems of his own when his wife leaves him in this episode. We also find out for the first time that Leo is a recovering alcoholic, as he joins the Vice President at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting.
5. "West Wing" episode 5: "The Crackpots and These Women". For the first time, we're introduced to 'Big Block of Cheese Day', an initiative of Leo's based on which real-life President's ownership of a very large cheese?

Answer: Andrew Jackson

This story is partially taken from real life events. Andrew Jackson was said to have been a big cheese fan, and was once given a 1,400 pound (635kg) block of cheese as a gift. The story that has been told is that he aged it for two years, and then put it out for public consumption, upon which it was devoured by hungry visitors in a matter of hours.

Interestingly, Thomas Jefferson was also a cheese fanatic, and he received a big block as a gift at one stage as well (it was slightly smaller though). 'Big Block of Cheese Day' in the fictional West Wing is about giving a voice to people who don't usually have one, and staff take on meetings that they would usually say no to.
6. "West Wing" episode 6: "Mr. Willis of Ohio". During a poker game, the President decides to put his staff through a trivia quiz. Which of the following is NOT one of the questions he asks?

Answer: What is the only fruit without seeds?

His staff are up to the task and are able to answer most of his questions. We discover throughout the series that President Bartlet is not only a trivia buff, but also something of a US national parks expert, as well as a brilliant chess player.
7. "West Wing" episode 7: "The State Dinner". Who is the White House hosting at the state dinner in this episode?

Answer: The President of Indonesia

In a very busy episode, the President has to deal with an FBI hostage situation, a category 4 hurricane, and the nation's truckers threatening a strike. At the same time, his staff have trouble finding an interpreter to speak the same Indonesian language as the President, until it is discovered that he speaks English!
8. "West Wing" episode 8: "Enemies". Sam gets caught up in a prank when Leo and the president ask him to draft what?

Answer: A birthday message

Leo decides to pull a prank on Sam when he finds out Sam is accompanying his daughter, Mallory, to the opera. When Sam discovers this, rather than giving up on the birthday message, he decides he needs to 'nail it' and keeps drafting.
9. "West Wing" episode 9: "The Short List". The West Wing staff have an opportunity to put a new judge on the Supreme Court in this episode, following the death of one of the Supreme Court justices.

Answer: False

Justice Joseph Crouch retires, and tells President Bartlet in no uncertain terms that he hasn't been happy with how he has run the country. Crouch asks if Bartlet has considered Roberto Mendoza, but it becomes clear through the episode that the favourite is Peyton Harrison.

However, when a controversial opinion he wrote on privacy comes to light, Harrison is ruled out and Mendoza becomes the new nominee.
10. "West Wing" episode 10: "In Excelsis Deo". Which member of the West Wing staff organises a military funeral for a homeless man?

Answer: Toby

Toby discovers that a homeless man, Walter Hufnagel, has died while wearing the coat Toby donated to goodwill. He goes on to discover that the man was a Korean War veteran, and decides that he deserves a proper send-off.
