Josh convinced Santos to run for Democratic nomination. Santos accepted on one condition: that Josh run his campaign. Donna, after quitting her job with Josh, joined Bob Russell's campaign.

The episode commences with Bartlet's last State of the Union being wrapped up, and the staff busily trying to work out how best to spend their last year in office. Leo has been watching previous State of the Union addresses and is coming up with some ideas.

Mrs Bartlet wants herself to be seen as more like regular people, so she attends a NASCAR race.

Despite his reservations, Santos eventually realises it's in his campaign's best interest to come out and "take the ethanol plegde". Bob Russell also does so, but Republican candidate Senator Vinick decides not to.

CJ makes the judgment call not to wake the President and to deal with the British PM herself. Later in the episode, Leo points out that if he was awoken in all such situations, he would have died from sleep deprivation.

Josh has the idea of sending people dressed as chickens to ask Bob Russell why he is 'too chicken' to debate Santos. But the media focuses on Donna's reaction rather than the bizarre dressing up.

Both Josh and Toby are frustrated with what they see as betrayals: Toby for being abandoned for the Santos campaign, and Josh for Toby's leaking of material that they had worked on together. The fight escalates quickly into throwing of objects and even comes to blows, leaving Toby with a cut face and in tears.

The situation escalates when US hunters are surrounded by Canadian troops on the border. Kate Harper notes that there is no "Canada Invasion Plan" in existence, but is quickly corrected on this point.

Republican speaker Jeff Haffley pulls the vote when he sees how many Democrats have turned up. So they all pretend to leave the building and fly back to their respective homes, hiding overnight in the White House on the hope that Haffley will call a new vote the next day (which he does).

Hoynes is on the news for all the wrong reasons (again) when accusations of unwanted advances to a female staffer are revealed. In the meantime, Santos decides to mortgage his house in Texas to allow the campaign to continue.

Leo and the President decide that this may be their last chance to have a meaningful conversation with the Cuban leader, Castro. Leo visits him at Ernest Hemingway's house without even letting the secret service know.

Vinick and Bartlet hold a very quick meeting after Vinick is confirmed as the Republican nominee. The President asks him to stay longer to make it look like they didn't agree on things so quickly. They discuss religion's role in politics, among other things.

Answer: Russell offers it to Santos

Leo convinces Josh that Santos should take the VP spot on Russell's ticket, and Russell offers it to Santos. However, Santos decides not to take the deal and presses on for nomination.

Bartlet backs Santos and that pushes the New York delegates into a decision, handing him the 2162 votes he needs for nomination.

Santos offers it to the third candidate, Baker, who refuses immediately. Josh and Bartlet both agree that Leo should be the candidate given his vast experience.
