Olive was known as the free spirit. She'd been all over the place and never visited for long periods of time. In truth it seemed like Olive was really just very lonely and had used traveling to distract herself from that fact.

Judith had encouraged Joan and Adam to go enjoy a great date at a French restaurant. The only problem was that she was making another bad decision for herself. She and a couple of other teens went to score some drugs and they were attacked in the process. Judith was fatally stabbed, but did not die right away. Joan was able to see her and Judith was able to say goodbye to Joan. Joan felt very guilty about being on the date with Adam while Judith was being stabbed. Judith drops by, in spirit, to visit Joan and Helen in the season finale "Something Wicked This Way Comes". The only time we see Joan babysit is in season one, when she took care of the terminally ill Rocky.

It took Joan awhile to realize what that statement really meant. On the night Kevin had his accident, it was Luke's birthday. It was Luke's birthday once again and his traditional birthday dinner was totally forgotten, like the gift he'd wanted so badly on the night of the accident. Joan remembered how Luke had been forgotten that night and she bought him the kite he'd wanted for that birthday.

Sarah was played by Mary Mara. She has guest starred on many TV shows. You may have seen her on "ER" in 1996 as Loretta Sweet, "THe Practice", "Third Watch", "NYPD Blue", and as Camille on "The Handler".

Annie Potts joined the cast as Will's new corrupt boss Lucy. Try as she did, she was not able to get Will to cheat on Helen. She even used her gray moral area to help Will catch Judith's killer, but that just made him more wary of her. She finally left, as she knew she's worn out her welcome, for a higher, and more corrupt, position in politics.

Joan ends up singing a beautiful song that has her parents teary eyed in the audience. God is the one who produces the play, but Joan doesn't realize that right away.
God: " Nothing of value comes without a little struggle. Some of the most beautiful flowers in the world only grow after a forest fire. Literally out of the ashes, they blanket the ground with color."
Joan: "Yeah, but you could make that happen without the fire. Then, people would like you more."
God: "Then they'd just find something else to blame me for."

Ryan finds God and his plan simplistic to the point of ludicrousy. He is not burdened by the need to follow God's plans and suggestions, and it turns out that he goes out of his way to be evil and destructive. Season three was set up for Joan to face down her hardest challenge- defeating a brilliant man with no conscience. Is Ryan evil, the anti-Christ? We'll never know since the show was not renewed for its third season. "Tru Calling" also experienced this.

When Tru Davies was handed her alter-ego Jack, the show was canceled.
