Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The show's main protagonist, Piper Chapman, is processed and admitted in the very first episode. It is revealed that Piper's ex-girlfriend, Alex, had originally got her involved in a criminal enterprise 10 years earlier. For what reason is Piper incarcerated?

Answer: drug trafficking/smuggling

As Piper would attest, she internationally "carried a bag of drugs, one time, 10 years ago." In season 1, it was also revealed that Alex was the person that named her in exchange for a lesser sentence.
2. Gloria Mendoza is not a woman to be trifled with. Whether she is running the prison kitchen, performing Santeria cleansings, or schooling her son on the errors of his ways - she commands a lot of attention. Why is Gloria in prison?

Answer: food stamp fraud

Gloria's backstory revealed that she ran a convenience store in New York City, which allowed her aunt, Lourdes, to run a Santeria shop in the back room. Gloria was also involved in food stamp fraud, whereby she accepted food stamps, gave cash to the customer, and then charged the government for items that were never purchased.
3. Which Litchfield inmate is incarcerated for the murder of a nurse at an abortion clinic?

Answer: Tiffany "Pennsatucky" Doggett

Pennsatucky was a methamphetamine user who had 5 abortions and 1 miscarriage before landing in Litchfield. The nurse at the abortion clinic told Tiffany with disdain that she should "get the fifth one for free" because she was there so frequently. By her own words, Pennsatucky's "feelings were hurt" so she grabbed a friend's shotgun out of his truck and killed the woman.

The 'right to live' movement placed her on a pedestal as the savior of unborn babies; they paid for her legal representation and members of extremist churches continued to give money to her commissary fund.
4. Before dedicating herself to running the prison kitchen, Galina 'Red' Reznikov successfully ran a small market and restaurant with her husband in Queens, New York until they upset the wrong people. While her exact charges are unknown, why is Red in prison?

Answer: organized crime

Red and her husband got in deep with the Russian mafia, who she says "make the Italians look like guppies." Red was disrespected by one of their wives and she pushed her chest with such force that she burst her breast implant, which led them to be in the mob's debt. Shortly afterward, the henchman were seen moving garbage bagged body parts into their freezer, as a part of the repayment of their debt. Clearly it all went bad for Red after this incident.
5. Sophia Burset is a transgender inmate who operates the most successful prison salon, and struggles to find balance and her place in supporting her wife, Crystal, and son, Michael. What crime landed Sophia in prison?

Answer: credit card fraud

Before transitioning, Sophia went by her birth name of Marcus Burset and worked as a firefighter for the City of New York. In order to pay for the necessary treatments and surgeries to transition to being Sophia, he would steal credit card information from the homes of fires he fought and used them to pay his bills.

After transitioning to Sophia, she was turned in by her son Michael, who was upset by the changes she was making, and she was sent to Litchfield.
6. Aleida and Dayanara Diaz are a mother-daughter prison pair unlike any other in Litchfield. They simultaneously hate and love each other, but given their close prison quarters, they have plenty of time to work out their issues. While their precise charges are unknown, Aleida's boyfriend Cesar got them both involved in what illegal business that landed them in prison?

Answer: drug manufacturing and distribution

Flashbacks showed that Aleida allowed her live-in boyfriend, Cesar, to manufacture and distribute drugs from her apartment kitchen. After Aleida was incarcerated, Daya struck up a relationship with Cesar, partly out of revenge against her mother. While they are in prison, Cesar cares for Aleida's other four children, and takes Daya's baby home as well. That was all thrown into turmoil at the end of season 3 when the Drug Enforcement Agency raided Cesar's apartment and took the children into the system.
7. Lorna Morello is a woman desperate for love and always looking for someone to take her away and make her life complete. She loves the finer things in life, like designer shoes, cosmetics, and beautiful dresses. However, it is her pursuit of these things that have landed her in prison. Which of the following is NOT one of the reasons that Lorna is in prison?

Answer: burglary

Lorna was involved in a mail fraud scam whereby she ordered high-end items, claimed she never received them, and then asked for refunds. While picking up packages she met Christopher, a man whom she came to idealize as her 'dream man.' Christopher did not reciprocate her advances so she began stalking him, and then stalking his girlfriend. Eventually he took out a restraining order against her, which she violated multiple times, but it was after a bomb was placed under Christopher's girlfriend's car that everything went bad for Morello.
8. Once she grew up, it was Claudette who ran the child-labor cleaning business before landing herself in prison. But, she is also guilty of another crime; what is the other crime for which Miss Claudette is in prison?

Answer: murder

When Miss Claudette discovered that one of her girls had been physically assaulted by one of the customers, she took it upon herself to make sure the man did not hurt any other girls or women. She arrived at his home and cleaned his house, as the service she was hired to do.

Answer: manslaughter

Yoga Jones told fellow inmate, Janae Watson, that she grew a marijuana hybrid called 'AK 47' which she sold to dispensaries to sustain herself financially. Deer were destroying her plants, so after trying a variety of alternatives she armed herself with a rifle. One night, while intoxicated and sitting watch for the deer, she shot what she believed to be a deer, but what ended up being a neighboring 8-year-old boy who ran away from his parents in anger for taking away his Nintendo. Yoga is noticeably horrified and tormented by what she has done but she tries daily to make herself a better and more peaceful person.

Despite excelling in running, she sees it as the thing that has kept her from getting noticed romantically by boys. The boy that finally did give her attention ended up getting her in the trouble that landed her in prison. Why is Watson in prison?

Answer: armed robbery

Janae went to a party in high school that was full of people from her neighborhood, who the host called 'thugs.' The host, Haley Ricci, was a local gang leader that encouraged her to focus on school, stay out of the gang life, and then told her to leave the party.

She met a guy on the way out that finally gave her the attention she was seeking, and the next thing you see, Janae is robbing a check-cashing business with her new boyfriend. Her running speed gave her a lead from her boyfriend and led her right into the police, while he turned his back and fled.
