Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Vera
Answer: Northumberland
The show 'Vera' is based on the novels by Ann Cleeves and made its debut on ITV in May 2011. The lead character is Vera Stanhope, a DCI in the Northumberland & City Police, who has more than a little motherly attitude to both her staff and the suspects whom she interviews.
Her base is located in Newcastle upon Tyne, but various murders take her often into the stunning Northumberland countryside
2. All Creatures Great and Small
Answer: Yorkshire
This much-loved television show, based on the popular books by James Herriot (a pen name for Alf Wright), ran on the BBC from 1978 to 1980, and recounted his life as a veterinary in North Yorkshire from the mid-1930s onwards. The principal characters were three vets who shared a house and a practice in Darrowby, a fictional town represented in the show by the village of Ackrigg.
These were James Herriot (Christopher Timothy), Siegfried Farnon (Robert Hardy) and his badly behaved brother Tristan (Peter Davison). Robert Hardy would later play the Minister for Magic in the Harry Potter movies, and Peter Davison the 'Fifth Doctor' ('Doctor Who', 1982-1984).
3. EastEnders
Answer: London
'EastEnders' was conceived as London's answer to ITV's very popular 'Coronation Street' (set in the Manchester area). The creators made up the fictional east London district of Walford (E 20, also a fictional postal code) and set the show around the houses and shops of Albert Square, especially the local pub, the Queen Victoria.
The show made its debut in February 1985 and became known for its dramatic Christmas episodes.
4. Foyle's War
Answer: Hastings
'Foyles' War' ran for eight series on ITV between 2002 and 2015. It starred Michael Kitchen as DCS Christopher Foyle and was set first in Hastings during World War II, and later after the War in London when he joins the secret service. Even in wartime there were crimes, especially murders, to be solved and Foyle brings a very great integrity and sympathy to his job. Assisting him in his work were his driver Samantha 'Sam' Stewart (Honeysuckle Weeks) and his sergeant Paul Milner (Anthony Holmes), who was wounded while serving in Norway and has been invalided out of the army.
5. Grantchester
Answer: Cambridge
'Grantchester' is an ITV mystery series, set in Cambridge, with the parish church in the real village of Grantchester used in the filming. It made its debut in 2014 and stars James Norton as the Reverend Sidney Chambers, the local Anglican vicar in Grantchester. Sidney gets to know Detective Inspector Geordie Keating (Robson Green) and they form both a warm friendship and an effective partnership in solving crimes.
6. Coronation Street
Answer: Manchester
'Coronation Street' remains the flagship of British 'soap operas', with an immense following both in the UK and around the world. It is set in Salford, an inner suburb of Manchester, and is based around the houses and shops of Coronation Street, especially the local pub, The Rovers Return.
It has featured a huge number of memorable characters and tackled very many social and personal issues concerning these characters.
7. Torchwood
Answer: Cardiff
'Torchwood' was a spin-off of 'Doctor Who' -- anagram 'Doctor Who' and see what you get. It ran for four seasons from 2006 to 2011 and starred John Borrowman as Jack Harkness, a likeable and immortal con-artist fro the 'Doctor Who' series. The first two series were set in Cardiff, site of a space-time rift, and featured Torchwood, an institute set up to deal with alien contacts.
The third and fourth series were set in London and the United States.
8. Lewis
Answer: Oxford
'Lewis' ran for nine seasons on ITV (33 episodes from 2006 to 2015) and starred Kevin Whately reprising his role as Robert 'Robbie' Lewis from the very popular show 'Inspector Morse'. After Lewis's wife was killed in a car crash, he had gone overseas but in the first episode returns to Oxford as a Detective Inspector.
His 'sidekick' is James Hathaway (played by Laurence Fox), who was studying to be a priest before changing careers to become a police officer.
9. Hollyoaks
Answer: Chester
'Hollyoaks' made its debut on Channel Four in 1995 and was aimed at a younger audience, with characters and issues deigned to appeal to that age range. Hollyoaks is a fictional district in the northern city of Chester. In 2014 the show won the British Soap Awards, breaking the 15-year run of 'Coronation Street' and 'EastEnders'.
10. The Coroner
Answer: South Devon
'The Coroner' ran for two series on the BBC in 2015 and 2016. It was set in the fictional village of Lighthaven on the south coast of Devon and starred Claire Goose as Jane Kennedy who returns with her teen-aged daughter to her home village as the new coroner and meets up again with her former boy-friend Davey Higgins (Matt Bardock), who is now the local detective sergeant.
Much of the charm of the series was the appealing landscape of South Devon and Cornwall.
