Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who played Doctor Doug Ross on the TV show "ER"?

Answer: George Clooney

Yes, the iconic Mr. Clooney played the "ER" doctor but, did you know, before that he played an orderly named Ace in the comedy "E/R" in 1985? All the other choices also played doctors: Howie Mandel played Dr. Wayne Fiscus on "St. Elsewhere"; going back to the 1960s, Richard Chamberlain was Dr. James Kildare and Vince Edwards played the unsmiling "Ben Casey".
2. What well-known actor portrayed Dr. Philip Chandler on "St. Elsewhere"?

Answer: Denzel Washington

Denzel Washington, before his movie stardom, was Dr. Chandler at St. Eligius Hospital from 1982 through 1988. The other choices all appeared as doctors on that same show, i.e., Dr. Erlich, Dr. Caldwell and Dr. Auschlander, respectively. Personally, although the last episode ended controversially, I thought it was extremely clever - *SPOILER ALERT* - to show that the long-running drama was actually all in the mind of an autistic young boy!
3. On the campy TV show "Batman" from 1966 and the TV movie of the same year, which of the following actresses did NOT play Catwoman?

Answer: Halle Berry

Did you get fooled? While Halle Berry did play "Catwoman" in the 2004 movie of the same name, she was born the same year the "Batman" TV show first aired. All the other ladies were a part of TV history: Julie Newmar was the star of "My Living Doll" (1964-1965); Eartha Kitt, among many other shows, was the voice of Yzma in "The Emperor's New Groove" in 2000; Lee Meriwether won the title of "Miss America" in 1955, was Catwoman in the TV movie with Adam West and Burt Ward in 1966, and played the daughter of "Barnaby Jones" in 1973.
4. Moving to the 1980s, George Peppard played the leader of the "A-Team", but what was the name of the role he played?

Answer: John 'Hannibal' Smith

This clichéd show, which ran from 1983 through 1987, had four Vietnam vets helping others while on the run from "a crime they didn't commit". 'Hannibal' was in charge of Murdock (Dwight Schultz), "Bad Attitude" Baracus (the inimitable "Mr. T") and Peck played by Dirk Benedict. George Peppard was also a movie actor who played opposite Audrey Hepburn in "Breakfast At Tiffany's" in 1961 and starred in his own TV show called "Banacek" in the early 1970s.
5. Based on a spin-off of "All in the Family", what was the name of the character (who was a cousin of Edith Bunker's) played by Bea Arthur?

Answer: Maude Findlay

"And then there's Maude..." Long before she was a "Golden Girl", Bea Arthur played Edith Bunker's very liberal cousin who lived with her fourth husband, Walter, and her divorced daughter Carol and Carol's son in Tuckahoe, NY. The show ran from 1972 through 1978 and tackled controversial issues of the time, e.g., abortion.

The incorrect answers represent Maude's neighbor, played by Rue McClanahan and the roles they both played on "The Golden Girls".
6. Which Cartwright was played by Michael Landon on "Bonanza" from 1959 through 1973?

Answer: Joseph Cartwright

Michael Landon played "Little Joe" on this long-running TV Western. Ben was his father, played by Lorne Greene, and his brothers Adam and 'Hoss' were played by Pernell Roberts and Dan Blocker. They were very well-off, lived on the Ponderosa Ranch near Virginia City and each son had a different mother - all married to Ben at one time or another and all deceased.
7. Who played the role of Judge Harry T. Stone on the comedy "Night Court"?

Answer: Harry Anderson

"Night Court" was a quirky comedy which ran from 1984 through 1992. There were some great performances by Larroquette playing lawyer Dan Fielding, Richard Moll playing bailiff 'Bull' Shannon and Charles Robinson playing court clerk Mac Robinson, with Markie Post and Marsha Warfield rounding out the cast. Harry portrayed a pretty liberal judge who practiced magic and loved Mel Torme.
8. On "Party of Five", what was the name of the oldest Salinger sibling?

Answer: Charlie Salinger

The five Salinger children (including baby Owen) were orphaned when their parents were killed in an automobile accident. Charlie was the oldest and responsible for keeping the family together. Charlie was played by Matthew Fox (of future "Lost" fame); Julia was Neve Campbell (from "Scream"), while Bailey and Claudia were Scott Wolf and Lacey Chabert.

The show ran from 1994 (before "Dawson's Creek") through 2000, and introduced us to Sarah Reeves, played by that famous "Ghost Whisperer", Jennifer Love Hewitt.
9. We can't leave out the police drama "NYPD Blue", so what was the name of the short-sleeved detective played by Dennis Franz?

Answer: Andy Sipowicz

Franz played tough talking Detective Andy Sipowicz from 1993 through 2005. Jimmy Smits played his calmer, more rational partner, Bobby Simone. Arthur Fancy, the Lieutenant of the NYC Squad was played by James McDaniel, while the soft-spoken Greg Medavoy was Gordon Clapp. The drama showed us the gritty underbelly of life in New York City - a far cry from "Barney Miller"!
10. I will end the quiz with another medical show, "House M.D.", by asking which character was played by Lisa Edelstein?

Answer: Dr. Lisa Cuddy

You didn't think I was going to ask about Hugh Laurie, did you? "House M.D." ran from 2004 to 2012. On the distaff side, Edelstein played Cuddy, the Administrative Head of Princeton-Plainview Hospital and House's on again, off again love interest and adversary. Dr. Cameron had the longest tenure under House and was played by Jennifer Morrison; "13" was one of the newer recruits depicted by Olivia Wilde, as was Amber Volakis (Wilson's love), played by Anne Dudek.
