Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. William Hartnell
Answer: 1st Doctor
Hartnell, who was 55 when he got the role, played the doctor for four seasons and 129 episodes. The role was later played by a few other actors when the character was brought back for specials after Hartnell's death.
He was the Doctor from November 1963 until October 1966.
2. Tom Baker
Answer: 4th Doctor
Tom Baker played the doctor for more seasons (7) and more total episodes (172) than any of the first 12 actors to hold the role.
Baker's doctor is the one most often depicted when the show is referenced in other media, showing off his signature multi-colored, overly-long scarf and curly hair.
He was the Doctor from June 1974 until March 1981.
3. David Tennant
Answer: 10th Doctor
Tennant, along with the writing and producing team that took over helped spur on a resurgence of the show after it returned to the airwaves following a long hiatus. While he was the second actor to play the character in the revival, he was the one that most fans connected with.
He was the Doctor from June 2005 until January 2010.
4. Peter Capaldi
Answer: 12th Doctor
Capaldi was also 55 when he took over the role of The Doctor, tying him with Hartnell for being the oldest to tackle the role.
The series was coming off of two very successful young actors having played the role, and putting an older actor into the spot was arguably a risky move for the producers. Popularity didn't wane though and Capaldi was quickly accepted in the role.
He had previously appeared in the series as other characters, though that wasn't addressed at all in his first two seasons.
He first started playing the Doctor in December 2013.
5. Christopher Eccleston
Answer: 9th Doctor
Eccleston was chosen to be the actor to bring the show back in 2005 after the 16-year hiatus. That hiatus has been halted once to produce a failed pilot for American television in 1996.
While he became a popular actor in the role, he stayed on for just a single series of 13 episodes before leaving the show.
He was the Doctor from March 2005 until June 2005.
6. Patrick Troughton
Answer: 2nd Doctor
Troughton had the task of proving the concept that the role could be passed on. As the 2nd actor to tackle the role, he had to make it believable that it was the same character, just different, that viewers were seeing each week.
He was the Doctor from October 1966 until June 1969.
7. Peter Davison
Answer: 5th Doctor
Davison's run started in 1981 and lasted three seasons. He was chosen as much for the physical differences in appearance from Tom Baker as he was for his acting chops. Davison was already an established actor on several other BBC shows before taking the role.
He was the Doctor from March 1981 until March 1984.
8. Paul McGann
Answer: 8th Doctor
McGann had the task of attempting to bring the series to America for production. The show had been in hiatus for for nearly 8 years when they decided to produce a made for TV movie to relaunch the series.
It didn't work, and his television career as The Doctor lasted just that one film. The actor though had a long run in the role, continuing on his 8th doctor as the voice actor in audio books and radio plays.
He was the Doctor from May 1996 until the series rebooted in March 2005.
9. Sylvester McCoy
Answer: 7th Doctor
McCoy was the last actor to play the role before the show went on hiatus in 1989. He spent three years in the role. After his third year the show went on indefinite hiatus, not returning in full until 2005, with just a single TV movie being made during the 16 year break.
He was the Doctor from September 1987 until May 1996.
10. Jon Pertwee
Answer: 3rd Doctor
Pertwee's incarnation of the role was one of the longest tenured in the show's history. He stayed on for five seasons, which at the time made him the longest tenured doctor in terms of seasons in the role.
Most of his stories took place on Earth, due mainly to budget constraints on the show not allowing them to build alien sets.
He was the Doctor from January 1970 until June 1974.
