Mrs. Garrett was played by Charlotte Rae. She went to visit the Eastland school where Kimberly Drummond went. She assisted Kimberly and her friends in sewing clothes for their school play. She then became a housemother to seven girls at the school. In the second season, Mrs. Garrett became the school dietician then quit the school three years later after an altercation with the school headmaster over his habit of taking her for granted.

Her son persuaded her to open her own gourmet shop called "Edna's Edibles" and she moved in the house that came with it.

Dorothy "Tootie" Ramsey was the youngest and the only black member of the cast. She wore skates in the first season because of her height and this was done to match her in height with the other girls. Tootie was played by Kim Fields.

Natalie Green was also the editor for the Eastland school paper. Although overweight, Natalie once received a reputation as a sex symbol and almost was a rape victim. Mindy Cohn played Natalie.
