Chrissy (Christmas Snow) was played by Suzanne Somers. She was also known as the typical dumb blonde. Somers played the part of Chrissy from 1977 until 1981, when she was fired after she demanded a huge raise and had a showdown with the show's producers. Chrissy's departure was explained that she went back home to Fresno. During her last year on the show, she was often seen in the tag when she would talk to her roommates via telephone.

Janet Wood (Joyce DeWitt) was a short and cute brunette and seemed to be the most sensible of the roommates. Like John Ritter (Jack), she stayed on the series during its entire run. Janet got married at the end of the series in 1984.

Jack Tripper was played by John Ritter. He became Janet and Chrissy's roommate when their old roommate, Eleanor, moved out to get married and they found him sleeping in their bathtub. Upon moving in with Janet and Chrissy, Jack had to convince their landlord that he was a homosexual.

This became the premise of many episode, as well as his misadventures with many women over the presence of his two female roommates.

Mr. Roper was played by Norman Fell and stayed on until 1979, when he and his co-star, Audra Lindley, moved to their own show, "The Ropers". Mr. Roper had a reputation for cheapness, frugality and lack of sex drive. He also relished making jokes about Jack, whom he believed was gay.

He also would get frustrated when the roommates were overdue in paying their rent, and was often indifferent to making repairs to their apartment.

Mrs. Roper was played by Audra Lindley. She also left the series in 1979 to star in the spin-off series "The Ropers". She was frustrated when she wanted to have sex with Mr. Roper and he never seemed interested. Mrs. Roper also befriended the roommates and would hide the truth from her husband about Jack's sexuality.

Ralph Furley bought the building when the Ropers moved. He was played by Don Knotts, who came to the show in 1979. He was known for his loud dressing habits and self-proclaimed big hit with the ladies, although he never dated much. He also has a fear of his mean-spirited and ruthless brother, Bart Furley.

Cindy Snow was payed by Jenilee Harrison, who succeeded Suzanne Somers after she was ousted from the series after a salary dispute. Cindy was described as accident prone and equal in naivety with her cousin, Chrissy.

Terri Alden joined the cast in 1981, and was played by Priscilla Barnes. Jack went to the hospital with an injured finger and refused to allow a female nurse, Terri, to treat it. They eventually warm up to each other at a going away party for Cindy.

Larry was played by Richard Kline, and was an occasional cast member the first few seasons, then became a full-time regular from 1979 to 1984. Larry would often claim that he was a doctor, a Playboy photographer, or a former U.S. Marine. He even stated that he was Jack, causing problems for both of them.

Lana Shields (Ann Wedgeworth) was added to the cast for the first half of the 1979-80 season. She was attracted to Jack, who didn't return the interest. Mr. Furley had a crush on her but she only used him to get her way. Lana was dropped from the cast because of her diminishing role and the writers' decision that her character was unnecessary.
