Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Scully was trying to get Mulder to tell her why they were there, what did she say she had to do?

Answer: wrapping

It was Christmas Eve and Scully was a bit annoyed by being called to the house by Mulder. She told him she had wrapping so that he'd get to the point. When Mulder looked in the back of her car, though, it was full of wrapped gifts!
2. What was Scully missing that led her to follow Mulder into the house?

Answer: car keys

After Mulder had headed off for the house, she realized she didn't have her keys. She looked in both cars and didn't see them, so went inside to ask if Mulder had taken them. Mulder suggested that "maybe it was a ghost" and then both agents heard a knocking from upstairs as the clock started to chime.
3. Upstairs in the house, a door creaked open to reveal a room with lights on. Mulder challenged Scully to say she wasn't afraid and she conceded, "All right. I'm afraid. But it's ________ fear."

Answer: an irrational

Scully had just finished a long rant in which she rationalized to Mulder all the reasons why they shouldn't be afraid: "These are tricks that the mind plays. They are ingrained clichés from a thousand different horror films. When we hear a sound, we get a chill. We see a shadow and we allow ourselves to imagine something that an otherwise rational person would discount out of hand.

The whole... Mulder...? The whole idea of a benevolent entity fits perfectly with what I'm saying. That a spirit would materialize or return for no other purpose than to show itself is silly and ridiculous. I mean, what it really shows is how silly and ridiculous we have become in believing such things. I mean, that- that we can ignore all natural laws about the corporeal body- that- that we witness these spirits clad in their own shabby outfits with the same old haircuts and hairstyles never aging, never- Never in search of more comfortable surroundings.

It actually ends up saying more about the living than it does about the dead. I mean, Mulder, it doesn't take an advanced degree in psychology to understand the unconscious yearnings that these imaginings satisfy. You know, the longing for immortality, the hope that there is something beyond this mortal coil, that we might never be long without our loved ones. I mean, these are powerful, powerful desires. I mean, they're the very essence of what make us human.

The very essence of Christmas, actually." When it came down to it, though, even Scully could get spooked.
4. Where did Scully and Mulder find their corpses?

Answer: under the floorboards

Scully and Mulder were standing in the library when the floorboards started creaking and moving up and down a bit. Mulder used a fire poker to pry them up and they found two very dead bodies. Scully realized the female corpse was wearing the same clothes as she was and Mulder quipped, "How embarrassing." Then Scully pointed out that the male corpse was wearing Mulder's clothes, and the agents concluded together that they were looking at their own corpses!
5. What did Maurice say his specialty as a mental health practitioner was in?

Answer: soul prospectors

Maurice told Mulder that he'd gotten experience with all the visitors to the house and noted that they all fell into the same category: "Narcissistic, overzealous, self-righteous egomaniac." He then psychoanalyzed Mulder, getting everything pretty much exactly as it was: "You kindly think of yourself as single-minded but you're prone to obsessive compulsiveness workaholism, antisocialism... Fertile fields for the descent into total wacko breakdown. [...] You've probably convinced yourself you've seen aliens. You know why you think you see the things you do? [...] 'Cause you're a lonely man.

A lonely man chasing paramasturbatory illusions that you believe will give your life meaning and significance and which your pathetic social maladjustment makes impossible for you to find elsewhere. You probably consider yourself passionate, serious, misunderstood."
6. What did Maurice say Mulder was afraid of?

Answer: the loneliness

Maurice theorized that Mulder put up with Scully and listened "endlessly to her droning rationalizations" because he was afraid of being alone. By that point, the conversation had become a bit too personal for Mulder and he insisted that he was only interested in finding his partner.
7. What did Lida claim Scully's "only joy in life" was?

Answer: proving Mulder wrong

After Scully had confessed that she was in the house only because her partner believed in ghosts, Lida said, "Oh, you poor child. You must have an awful small life. Spending your Christmas Eve with him. Running around chasing things you don't even believe in. [...] I can see it in your face: the fear; the conflicted yearnings; a subconscious desire to find fulfillment through another.

Intimacy through co-dependency. [...] Maybe you repress the truth about why you're really here, pretending it's out of duty or loyalty, unable to admit your dirty little secret. Your only joy in life is proving him wrong." Scully resisted the harsh truths and tried to refocus the conversation on Mulder's whereabouts.
8. What reason did Lida give for not having a Christmas tree?

Answer: they were Jewish

Scully questioned whether or not Lida even lived in the house, pointing out that the furniture was all covered and there was no Christmas tree. Before she could get too far in the interrogation, though, Maurice entered the room.
9. Where was Lida's wound?

Answer: stomach

When Scully ordered them to put their hands up, Lida's robe fell open and Scully could see a gaping gunshot wound in Lida's abdomen.
10. Where was Maurice's wound?

Answer: head

After seeing Lida's stomach wound, Scully approached Maurice and slowly removed his hat. Sure enough, he had a gaping gunshot wound in his head. At that point, Scully fainted and Lida and Maurice started to complain to one another about the cheap "kid stuff" they were having to resort to in order to scare their guests.
