Trying to stop the demon from attacking her, Laura sunk her teeth into his shoulder. It didn't work, though, and when she woke up, she and Wayne found that the baby was gone. Later, when Wayne came to see Laura in jail, she told him that she didn't believe the story he'd told her about her own involvement in the baby's death, and pulled his shirt away to find the bite mark on his shoulder.

Spender assured Stevens, "We're going to put this right into our priority caseload." As soon as Stevens was out the door, though, Spender reached behind himself to feed the report into his paper shredder. Luckily, Mulder apparently made a habit of going through Spender's trash, as he had found the shredded report, taped it back together, and traveled to Virginia on his own volition to follow up with Deputy Stevens!

The man, who looked like a poster-boy for ex-hippies, told Scully that he had never smoked pot, which Scully surely realized was a lie. She then asked if he had consorted with people who had ever smoked pot. The man again thought carefully before responding, "No. I really don't think so." Scully's cell phone rang then, saving her from having to continue the preposterous interview.

Wayne reminded Laura that she'd asked him to rake up the yard and told her that he wanted everything to look nice when she woke up. Laura returned to the house and Wayne turned back to the incinerator, where the skeleton of the baby was visible. As he watched his child burn up, Wayne cried.

After Laura was arrested, Wayne was speeding to Betsy's house to accompany her to her sonogram appointment. When he stopped at a red light, Mulder pulled up alongside him and asked where he was going. Wayne told him that he was late for an appointment with a business client and reminded Mulder that he worked as an insurance medical technician. Mulder then asked how far they had to go for the appointment and offered to race Wayne.

When the light changed, Wayne floored his car, speeding away in the convertible, but Mulder pulled up again next to Wayne, making it clear that Wayne wasn't going to escape so easily. To avoid blowing his cover, Wayne went to Kim's home and knocked on the door.

As Mulder waited at the curb to see what transpired, Wayne told Kim that he was a week early for her appointment to have blood drawn.

She seemed a bit hesitant, but let him into the house and gave the sample. While Wayne and Kim sat in the house, Kim's three boys ran through the room and out the front door.

When Wayne walked outside, the boys were sitting in Wayne's convertible playing in the car. As Wayne approached, Mulder ushered the kids out of the car, saying "Okay, speed racers. That's enough driver's education for today." Then, as Wayne got into his car, Scully called Mulder on his cell phone to tell him that Wayne had called Kersh to report that Mulder was harassing him. Wayne reiterated, "Leave me alone" and drove off, leaving Mulder to provide the cover story: "Tell [Kersh] I'm down here doing a background check on somebody."

He was, of course, drugging the milk so that he could dispose of the baby. The sonogram Betsy had gotten that afternoon had shown the same deformities that Wayne's other children had displayed. To his surprise, though, Betsy was unaffected by the drug, and as he tried to attack her and steal the baby, she grabbed him by the chin, warning him, "Maybe you didn't hear me! I said, what are you doing, Wayne?"

After Betsy had stopped them in the road and told them that Wayne had taken her baby, Scully and Mulder rushed to the house and found Wayne in the backyard digging. Scully told Wayne to stop digging; that he couldn't hope to bury the truth at that point. Wayne tearfully shot back, "I'm not burying anything. I'm digging it up." When Betsy showed him her true colors, Wayne realized that she had been using him all along and was looking for the normal babies that she had killed and buried in her yard.

After he was shot by Deputy Stevens, Wayne was taken to the hospital and put in a bed right next to Laura. Wayne seemingly willed the life out of himself and into Laura, thereby saving her life and ending his own. With that final act, Wayne showed that perhaps he did really care for Laura all along!

Betsy had actually likely sought out Wayne so that she could have a demon baby. Scully and Mulder found evidence of four previous babies buried in her yard, and each of them was perfectly formed. After fooling the agents, Betsy drove off in Wayne's red convertible with her demon baby.
