Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Peter Bell, "Heaven for Betsy" (1952)

Answer: Jack Lemmon

Although he is much better known for his movie roles, Jack Lemmon starred in the short-lived comedy "Heaven for Betsy" with his then-wife Cynthia Stone. They played newlyweds Peter and Betsy Bell, of whom she was the more practical. His job involved buying toys for a New York store.

Lemmon's movie career brought him eight Oscar nominations (one for supporting actor, seven for best actor) from which he had two wins. The first was in the supporting category, for "Mister Roberts" (1955) and the second was Best Actor for "Save the Tiger" (1973).
2. Ralph Kramden, "The Honeymooners" (1955-6)

Answer: Jackie Gleason

"The Honeymooners" was about Ralph and Alice Kramden (Gleason and Audrey Meadows) and their friends and neighbours Ed and Trixie Norton (Art Carney and Joyce Randolph) and their lives in the big city. Ralph was a bus driver and Ed worked in the sewers, and both had dreams of striking it rich one day.

As creator of the series Gleason also received writing credits for all 39 episodes. He also composed the theme music and was heavily involved in the production of the series.
3. Socrates "Sock" Miller, "The People's Choice" (1955-58)

Answer: Jackie Cooper

In this comedy series, Sock Miller (Cooper) won a seat on city council and often clashed with Mayor John Peoples (Paul Maxey) who became his father-in-law when Sock married Mandy Peoples (Patricia Breslin). As can be seen, the title plays on the fact that Sock is the choice of both the people who elected him and of Miss Peoples, who married him.

Jackie Cooper started acting as a child in movies like "Skippy" and "The Champ" (both 1931) after appearing in numerous short films beginning in 1929, when he was seven. He made the transition to adult roles especially successfully on TV. He starred in another series, "Hennessey" (1959-62) as the title character, and made numerous guest appearances between then and 1990.
4. Bart Maverick, "Maverick" (1957-62)

Answer: Jack Kelly

When most people think of "Maverick" they think of James Garner as Bret (or even Mel Gibson in the 1994 movie), but it was Bart (Jack Kelly) who appeared in the most episodes of the TV series, 83 to Bret's 60. The slick gambling brothers entertained us in this comedy western, and were joined for 16 episodes in the later seasons by Roger Moore, as their cousin Beau from England.

Jack Kelly's acting career spanned the years 1939 to 1991, in both movies and television. He appeared in ten episodes of the second season of "Get Christie Love!" (1974-75) and eleven episodes of "The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries" (1977-79).
5. Ben Manfred, "The Four Just Men" (1959-60)

Answer: Jack Hawkins

"The Four Just Men" had met on a mission during the Second World War, and dedicated their post-war lives to seeking justice and righting wrongs. They were a British member of parliament (Hawkins), an American journalist in Paris (Dan Dailey), a New York law professor (Richard Conte) and an Italian hotelier (Vittorio De Sica). The stars took turns appearing in episodes of the series, with only brief consultations between two or more of the "just men" ever being shown.

British actor Hawkins is best known for his movie career, including "The Cruel Sea" (1953), "The Bridge on the River Kwai" (1957) and "Zulu"(1964). He was posthumously nominated for a Primetime Emmy for his role in the TV mini-series "QB VII" (1974), which aired after his 1973 death.
6. Uncle Fester, "The Addams Family" (1964-66)

Answer: Jackie Coogan

"The Addams Family" was a comedy-horror series about a family that was both creepy and kooky, and consisted of parents Gomez and Morticia (John Astin and Carolyn Jones), Uncle Fester (Coogan), Lurch the butler (Ted Cassidy), a couple of kids and Thing (a disembodied hand). Gomez was wealthy, so could indulge his wife and family with whatever they desired.

Long before playing creepy Uncle Fester, Jackie Coogan was a child star in silent movies, notably "The Kid" (1921) with Charlie Chaplin. He continued to work in both TV and movies until 1984, the year of his death.
7. Steve McGarrett, "Hawaii Five-O" (1968-80)

Answer: Jack Lord

Unlike the 21st century reboot of the series, the original "Hawaii Five-O" spent almost all of its time fighting crime in Hawaii, largely in Honolulu but sometimes visiting other islands in the state. Lord's McGarrett was the central character, and his catchphrase "Book 'em, Danno" was well-known. Danno was Danny Williams (James MacArthur). Chin Ho was played by Kam Fong, and Kono was a very large man, played by an equally large Hawaiian actor whose stage name was Zulu. (Kono became a rather petite, though powerful, woman played by Grace Park in the reboot!)

Jack Lord made his first movie in 1949 and his first TV appearance in 1952. Before "Hawaii Five-O" he played the title character in the series "Stoney Burke" (1962-63). He also directed several episodes of the Hawaiian based series.
8. Oscar Madison, "The Odd Couple" (1970-75)

Answer: Jack Klugman

In this version of the story, Klugman played Oscar the slob to Tony Randall's neat freak Felix Unger. The two decided to share living space when separated from their wives and clashed over almost everything. Though this pair might not be Matthau and Lemmon (who starred in the 1968 movie) they certainly made the parts their own and made audiences laugh for a long time.

Klugman's acting career spanned 1950-2010 and included much work on television. His other big series was "Quincy, M.E." (1976-83) in which he played the title role, a crusading medical examiner.
9. Alex Bronkov, "Bronk" (1975-76)

Answer: Jack Palance

"Bronk" was a single season crime drama, starring Palance as a cop hired by a California city's mayor (to whom Bronkov reported) to clean up corruption in the city. The character's wife had been killed in a traffic accident, and he was left to care for his daughter who was badly injured at the same time.

Palance was best known as a movie villain, often in westerns like "Shane" (1953), though he showed a flair for comedy in his Best Supporting Actor Oscar-winning role in "City Slickers" (1991). He had been nominated for the same award twice before, for "Sudden Fear" (1952) and for "Shane".
10. Theme singer/Bobby Braddock, "The Love Boat" (1977-85)

Answer: Jack Jones

Each week the crew of "The Love Boat", led by Captain Stubing (Gavin MacLeod) welcomed new passengers to the cruise ship, and each episode followed several storylines usually leaning toward the romantic. The opening moments of the first 220 episodes were accompanied by the voice of Jack Jones singing the title tune. He also appeared in one 1980 episode as Bobby Braddock, whose mother and wife were trying to bring about a reconciliation between Bobby and his father (played by Jack's real father, Allan Jones). Oddly enough, they played singers...

Jack Jones's father, Allan, was both a singer and an actor, though Jack has been best known for his singing voice.
