Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Pilot' - How did John Reese first meet Joss Carter?

Answer: Joss Carter was investigating an incident on a train and John Reese was the victim.

John Reese was on a late night train and a group of youths came into his carriage. They tried to steal his alcohol and attacked him when he tried to stop them.

When Joss Carter reviewed the CCTV footage, she saw that he fought back and subdued the youths. Carter asked Reese what his name was and he responded that it was funny the only time people wanted to know his name was if he was in trouble. Carter asked him where he served in the military.
2. 'Pilot' - After John Reese left the precinct with Harold Finch's help, Finch offered Reese a job. What did Finch want Reese to do?

Answer: To help prevent violent crimes before they happen.

Harold Finch is a reclusive millionaire who has developed a computer which detects some crimes before they happen. He needs a helper - John Reese - to protect innocent people and stop others committing violent crimes.

Reese is a former CIA Agent who is presumed dead. Reese initially declined Finch's job offer. Finch said to Reese that he seemed to be drinking himself to death or looking for a more efficient way to die and suggested if Reese had a purpose he might find a reason to live.
3. Season one - Where was Finch's base of operations from which he ran The Machine?

Answer: An abandoned library.

Finch had many old books in his library and is horrified when Bear the dog eats them.

The subway station was used later when the library was compromised. The secret floor was a CIA stronghold and the antique shop is from a different show entirely - 'Forever'.
4. How did John Reese and Harold Finch find people who needed help?

Answer: Finch's Machine generated the social security number for their 'Person of Interest'.

Finch's Machine contacts Finch via public phone and tells him specific words, which actually relate to the books in Finch's library. Finch uses the books to find out the Person of Interest's Social Security number. Reese and Finch then must look at their Person of Interest and work out if they are a perpetrator or victim.

(The code words actually relate to the book's Dewey Decimal System number which when combined generate the Social Security number).
5. Season one - One of John Reese's mission was to help protect a high school teacher, Charlie Burton, who witnessed a crime. After Reese successfully got the teacher through to safety, there was a final gun fight. What did Reese and Finch discover about the teacher.

Answer: The teacher was actually Carl Elias, the boss of a crime family.

Carl Elias is the illegitimate son of a crime family. He is trying to take over the ghetto where he lives.

Elias becomes a recurring character on the show. Harold Finch is occasionally shown playing him at chess. Elias has a level of respect to Joss Carter, Finch and Reese.
6. In the pilot episode, John Reese was on holiday in Mexico with his girlfriend when they witness television footage of the September 11 2001 attack. About five years later, Reese saw her again at an airport and Reese said he was going overseas on a mission. She said she in engaged but told Reese she would wait for him if he asked. Who was the girlfriend?

Answer: Jessica Arndt

John Reese didn't ask Jessica to wait but did say the words softly after she left. Reese went looking for Jessica years later when he retrieved messages left on his phone from Jessica. He found out that Jessica had been killed two months earlier.

Zoe Morgan was a fixer who was helped by Reese and Finch.
Kara Stanton was Reese's CIA partner.
Grace Hendricks was Finch's girlfriend who believed that Finch is dead.
7. Season two - John Reese and Harold Finch received two numbers, for a married couple, Daniel and Sabrina Drake. What was the reason why both numbers came up?

Answer: Both Daniel and Sabrina had hired hit men to kill each other.

John Reese ended up kidnapping the couple so that they could engage in a counselling session with each other. They agreed they did love each other but were stressed as they had lost their baby due to a miscarriage and stopped talking with each other.
8. The Machine was developed by Harold Finch, a computer expert, at the request of the Government following the September 11 terrorist attacks on the USA. How much did he actually charge the government for developing the Machine?

Answer: $1.00

The government asked for the Machine to be developed to detect acts of terror. The Machine was programmed to only reveal the Social Security Number of the threat, not the name. The government were not happy with this and said they would need to review their contract price for The Machine. Harold Finch and Nathan Ingram responded by saying they had developed the Machine as a public service and only charged $1.

Nathan Ingram became concerned about the 'irrelevant numbers' that the Machine was generating and built in a back door so that he could monitor these. He realised that the irrelevant numbers were still violent crimes by not necessarily mass terrorist events. Ingram told Finch he had prevented 5 of the 12 people he'd been sent. Finch wasn't happy and reprogrammed the Machine to remove Ingram as administrator.
9. Harold Finch didn't develop his machine completely on his own. Who was Finch's partner and the public face of their company?

Answer: Nathan Ingram

Nathan Ingram was killed before John Reese and Harold Finch joined up. He died as a result of a car bomb that killed many passengers on a ferry.

Before his death, Ingram had started looking into the numbers that The Machine had determined were irrelevant. Finch was not happy and tried to stop him. Ingram was killed and Finch was presumed dead after the bomb. Finch went back to the Machine and asked why the Machine hadn't warned them, only to see that Ingram's number was an 'irrelevant number' supplied by the Machine.

Leon Tao was a person frequently helped by Reese and Finch. Weeks was a government official and Quinn was the mayor's Chief of Staff and head of HR, a corrupt group of police officers.
10. Season four - Which character conceded, "You gave me a reason to live".

Answer: John Reese

John Reese said this to Joss Carter when he was hallucinating after he was shot and dying. He meant that Finch had given Reese a reason to live. Following his discovery of Jessica's death, Reese turned to alcohol and was suicidal on the night he was attacked on the train (which lead to him meeting Joss Carter and Harold Finch).

Once Reese had a purpose again-helping prevent crimes and rescuing people-he found a reason to live again.
