Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who lived at 24 Sebastopol Terrace from 1960 to 1965 with his twin sister played by Hattie Jacques?

Answer: Eric Sykes

The series 'Sykes' was written by Eric Sykes and also Johnny Speight who went on to write 'Death do us Part' and 'In Sickness and in Health'. The series returned to the screens in 1979, but this time in colour.
2. Bob and Terry began their exploits in 1964. How were they better known?

Answer: The Likely Lads

This was a series concerning two friends Bob, played by Rodney Bewes, the sensible and responsible one, and Terry, played by James Bolan, who was the complete opposite. At the end of the 1960's the BBC, in a cost cutting move, wiped most of the master tapes. Now there are only eight episodes left in existence. They returned in the 1970's with 'Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads'.
3. Which 1967 sitcom was set in the cloisters of a cathedral?

Answer: All Gas and Gaiters

The series was a spin off from a play first seen on the Comedy Playhouse called 'The Bishop Rides Again'. The sitcom starred Derek Nimmo as the hapless Rev Mervyn Noote.
4. In the comedy series 'Bootsie and Snudge' where did the pair work?

Answer: a gentlemen's club

The two actors first starred in a series called 'The Army Game'. Bootsie played by Alfie Bass was a private, and Snudge played by Bill Fraser was the Sergeant Major. This series was a spin off from 'The Army Game' when the two were demobbed they worked together in a run down gentlemen's club, but the previous hierarchy was maintained.

The series was written by Barry Took and Marty Feldman.
5. The sitcom 'Steptoe and Son', which started in 1962, has remained an all time favourite, but who was Hercules?

Answer: a horse

The series was the story of the relationship between father son, who were both rag and bone men. When the series was shown in Scandinavia it was viewed as a tragedy rather than a comedy, this is not so odd as it sounds for there was plenty of pathos woven into the humour. The scriptwriters were Galton and Simpson.
6. Finish the catchphrase of the character Mandy as played by Dick Emery 'OOh you are awful! But _______'?

Answer: I like you

The Dick Emery Show ran from 1963 until 1981. The show was a series of sketches, each with a different character played by Dick Emery. Mandy was said to be based on Mandy Rice-Davis who came to prominence during the Profumo case of the 1960's.
7. Which sitcom starting in 1969 charted the lives of two Liverpudlian girls?

Answer: The Liver Birds

Although the cast was changed over time most people remember Sandra played by Nerys Hughes, and Beryl played by Polly James as the 'Liver Birds'. The script was written by Carla Lane, and the theme music created by Scaffold.
8. From 1963 until 1966 Richard Briers and Prunella Scales played a newlywed couple in which sitcom?

Answer: The Marriage Lines

Richard Briers went on to play Tom Good in the 'Good Life' and Prunella Scales is perhaps best known as Sybil, the long suffering wife of Basil Fawtly in 'Fawlty Towers'.
9. The first episode of 'Dad's Army' was shown in 1968. Which of the regular cast was the only one to be in the Homeguard during World War II?

Answer: John Laurie

John Laurie played Private Frazer. Arthur Lowe and John Le Mesurier both served with the regular army during that time.
10. In 1969 Stan and Jack were the stars of 'On The Buses'. What was the name of their harassed inspector?

Answer: Blake

Stan, played by Reg Varney, and his conductor were more interested in shirking than working. The humour was in style of a Carry-On film, with both main characters chasing after the clippies (clippie was a name given to a bus conductress). Three films followed the series.
