Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first act, what weapon does the Hat Kid snatch from the Mafia, allowing her to fight back?

Answer: Umbrella

A slightly unconventional weapon, to be sure, but the Hat Kid can execute a three-hit combo with her umbrella. After obtaining the umbrella, she swiftly takes down the Mafia and obtains her first Time Piece needed to help re-power her spaceship and return home.

Whilst jumping mid-air, she can also use a homing strike, which is necessary against the Mafia who 'get her all figured out' and become invulnerable to her umbrella.
2. How does the Hat Kid learn special abilities such as time-stopping and turning into a block of ice?

Answer: By finding yarn to knit new hats

It wouldn't be a collect-a-thon without things to collect; in this game we have yarn, badges, relics and time pieces. Whew! That sounds like a lot, but the vast majority of collectable items can be found simply by playing thoroughly. The yarn quickly becomes obsolete as there are far more spools of yarn to be found than are required for the recipes to produce the magical hats.

However, the specific types of yarn required to create later hats such as the Dweller and Time Stop hats don't appear until later levels.
3. Why does the Mustache Girl fall out with the Hat Kid after she defeats the Mafia Boss?

Answer: The Hat Kid refused to allow her to use the Time Pieces for time travel

The Mustache Girl broke a Time Piece which sent them back a few seconds in time, demonstrating the potential for time travel. After realising the power of the relics the Hat Kid needed to reclaim, she fantasised about going back in time to defeat the Mafia over and over again.

However, the Hat Kid was more concerned with getting home than with the local politics and thus she took the Time Piece back from the Mustache Girl. Amusingly, the friendship bar that had been building not only depleted to zero, it just kept on going until the word *ENEMIES* appeared on screen.
4. When trying to get famous in the 'Picture Perfect' act, what word profane to birds does DJ Grooves tell the Hat Kid not to use on camera?

Answer: Peck

As DJ Grooves mentions, his rival the Conductor regularly uses this swear word, often calling his crew pecknecks when they fail to live up to his expectations. Of course, when given the option to reply with 'peck' in response to a celebrity endorsement asking her favourite condiment, the Hat Kid still gets fans if she can't help but say it before being shooed off by an embarrassed Grooves.

If the word 'peck' was used when the C.A.W agents asked for the Hat Kid's personal information in 'The Murder on the Owl Express' as part of a phishing joke, the player was also able to get a Steam achievement if using that platform.
5. In 'Murder on the Owl Express', who is guilty of murder?

Answer: Whomever the Hat Kid chooses

The Conductor in this witty whodunit level was merely looking for footage for his latest video, and as such, any of the six suspects can be correctly accused. Whoever is accused will ultimately confess to the crime with the knife in the victim ultimately being made of rubber and the victim really being alive having been playing dead.

The fact that the Hat Kid's Uncle's Sister was a cardboard cutout might have been a hint that this whodunit wasn't entirely going to be played straight.
6. The sardonic Snatcher's first contract for the Hat Kid is to kill the Fire Spirits. How does she do so?

Answer: She throws paintings into the bonfire

At the start of the Subcon Forest chapter, a large black ghost with a big grin called the Snatcher forces the Hat Kid to sign her soul away with her only hope of escape being to fulfil a range of contracts. When she does get her soul back, the game tells her: "You got your soul back! You feel relieved, energized, and just the usual amount of empty!".

There's a bizarre juxtaposition of cute and creepy as the Fire Spirits exuberantly yell that they want to die before advising the Hat Kid that she needs to throw paintings onto the bonfire to do so. Whilst they do dance around the bonfire, there's no dance-off per se.
7. Which badge does the Hat Kid find in Subcon Well that allows her to fully explore the Subcon Forest?

Answer: Hookshot Badge

The badges, unlike the hats, provide utility abilities instead of spells. The Hookshot Badge allows the Hat Kid to latch onto items such as lanterns and hooks and swing to new heights. Some of the collectibles in Subcon Forest are extremely high up in the wood canopy and can't be reached without the Hookshot Badge.

The Projectile Badge imbues her umbrella with an ostentatious charged laser attack, the Hover Badge opens up her umbrella to avoid fatal fall damage and the Mumble Badge is a throwback to Banjo-Kazooie and is essentially a useless badge that converts voice acting into, well, mumbles.
8. In the final act at Subcon Forest, the Snatcher boasts that he's invulnerable as he won't turn blue like the others before swiping her hat. How does the Hat Kid outsmart him?

Answer: She throws one of his blue potions at him, enabling him to be hit

The Snatcher is generally one of the more characterful beings in the game. After fulfilling her final contract, he informs her that he no longer has a use for her, and that she should never have expected to be able to get the Time Pieces from *his* domain in the first place.

She only gets her hat back after defeating him, which she can begin to do after dodging the explosive blue potions and throwing one of them back at him. He laments that surely that can't actually count - but, oh, it does. After losing, he gets her to sign one more contract that simply tells her to get out and never return; she writes over it instead stipulating that she 'stay and have fun' and that he 'be her BFF'. Exasperatedly he relents, gives her the Time Piece and simply hopes she won't bother him again.
9. The more open-world Alpine Skyline level features four main level areas. Which of these is *NOT* one of them?

Answer: The Arctic Cruise

The Arctic Cruise is instead the first level of the 'Seal' part of the 'Seal the Deal' DLC. It involves three levels set on a ship run by cute - but incompetent - seals and a gruff walrus captain.

Unlike the other core levels, the Alpine Skyline is quite light on narrative and instead expects the player to simply explore and scope out the area for themselves. The Lava Cake is a multi-layered rock face with falling lava, the Twilight Bell is an otherworldly realm and the Windmill is... a windmill. The other area is the lofty Birdhouse, and obtaining all four Time Pieces from these places will segue into the final chapter where the local goatmen need to be saved from a mysterious illness.
10. After navigating an obstacle course of lava, traps and monsters, the Hat Kid is finally able to face her final foe, reclaim the stolen Time Pieces and go home. Who was this bitter adversary?

Answer: Mustache Girl

Some time after Mafia Town was liberated, the Mustache Girl claimed the island and turned the central streams of water into lava instead. She sat at her throne in a castle decked out with gaudy statues and lavish ornaments rendering judgment on all the people and creatures in the land. When the Hat Kid tripped the line, she hesitated to judge her as a bad guy and gave her a chance to leave, ultimately slapping her when she dared to approach her on the pile of Time Pieces she had stolen.

The Hat Kid navigated explosive hourglass attacks, charged lasers, super-fast movements and shadow strikes with the help of all her friends to finally put an end to the Mustache Girl's reign and finally get her Time Pieces secured. She wasn't too attached to the friends she'd made; when folk like the Snatcher, Conductor and DJ Grooves tried to join her on her spaceship, she kicked them away and locked the door. We probably oughtn't think too hard about it - why was a kid on a spaceship all by herself in the first place?
