Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what year was "Age of Empires" released?

Answer: 1997

The company Ensemble Studios was responsible for developing the game. Microsoft heralded it as a combination of the games "Civilization" and "Warcraft".
2. All except one of the following are real civilizations available for playing throughout the course of the game. Can you pick out the one that is not in the game?

Answer: Romans

The Romans were not included as a civilization in the original "Age of Empires" game, and neither were the Carthaginians. However, both the Romans and Carthaginians were introduced in the expansion pack, "Age of Empires: The Rise of Rome".
3. In "Age of Empires", can one choose between playing single player or multiplayer?

Answer: yes

The single player feature of the game is the player up against any number of AI opponents. The multiplayer feature is multiple human players competing against each other via the Internet.
4. What are the four ages in "Age of Empires"?

Answer: Stone Age, Tool Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age

You can research each of those ages at your town center. Although the research is not exactly cheap, your entire civilization is upgraded in a number of ways each time you advance an age.
5. In "Age of Empires" you can control both civilian and military units.

Answer: true

Civilian units include the Villager, and military units include the Scout Cavalry. In order to win the game, you must use both effectively and wisely.
6. How many population units does the town center support?

Answer: Four

In the very beginning of the game, you have no houses and so all of your population resides on the Town Center. Later in the game, when you have enough resources such as wood, you can begin constructing houses, which also provide population.
7. Imagine this "Age of Empires" scenario: You have just decided to declare victory after constructing this special building and holding it for 2,000 years. What building am I referring to?

Answer: A Wonder of the World

Although it says 2,000 years, each "year" is a few seconds long, measured by a timer at the top corner of the gamescreen. A wonder costs a lot of resources to build, and even if you manage to build it you need to protect it from enemy attack.
8. In which year did this game receive the Gamecenter Game of the Year Award?

Answer: 1997

1997 was also the year the game was released. Other awards received by this game include the 1998 AIAS Computer Strategy Game of the Year and the Wargamer Award for Excellence.
9. What was the official rating administered by Gamespot for "Age of Empires"?

Answer: 6.8

The official Gamespot review was written by T. Liam McDonald, who worked for Gamespot, and it was posted on October 27, 1997 at 12:49 PM Pacific Time. McDonald gave Gameplay a 6, Graphics an 8, Sound a 5, Value an 8, and Tilt a 7.
10. What is the overall population limit in "Age of Empires"?

Answer: 50

The fact that one could only create fifty units annoyed most gamers. In such games as "Empires: Dawn of the Modern World" for example, the population limit could extend into the thousands. The expansion pack, "Rise of Rome", sadly did not address this problem, but "Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings" did.
