Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Sim City" lets people test their mayoral instincts with a variety of scenarios. How many scenarios are there in all?

Answer: 8

Once a person beat the six main scenarios, two bonus scenarios open. These are much more difficult than the first six. The first of these bonus scenarios takes place in Las Vegas which is constantly being bombarded by UFO attacks. The second bonus scenario challenges the player to build a Megalopolis (500,000 people) on a map with no water, and no gifts either.
2. Just when the city is developing well, disaster strikes. How many different disasters are there in this game? (Hint: There are more than appear in the menu!)

Answer: 9

If the player is feeling bored or sadistic, six disasters can be activated with the main menu. These are fire, flood, plane crash, tornado, earthquake, and Bowser attack. The other three are nuclear meltdown, a rare but devastating event, UFO attack which comes into play in the Las Vegas scenario, and Shipwreck which does minimal damage.
3. Dr. Wright gives lots of advice for beginners. What tax rate does he suggest?

Answer: 7%

While he suggests a seven percent tax rate, residents still complain a lot about tax. I have found that a tax rate of five or even four percent pleases the citizens and still yields ample money for the year, provided the city is built well.
4. There are several gifts in this game that enhance a city. Each gift must be earned by doing something within the game. How does one earn a Mario Monument?

Answer: Get 500,000 people to move into the city

Probably the toughest gift to obtain, the Mario Monument shows one and all that the player has achieved Megalopolis status. Back in 1994, "Nintendo Power" magazine held a contest to see who could get the highest population. The winner had 604,280 "Sim-Citizens" walking (or perhaps driving on) his city's streets.
5. The first milestone in "Sim City" is the jump from Village status to Town status when 2,000 people live within the city gates. What gift is earned by achieving Town status?

Answer: Your house

This is probably the first gift a player will earn. Your house attracts residents, so put it in a residential neighborhood. As your city grows, so does your house. A modest home becomes a luxurious estate, complete with swimming pool!
6. There are six different classes of cities based on size. One of these is Capital. How many people constitute a Capital?

Answer: 50,000

Once a City becomes a Capital, the "View" option becomes available. This allows the player to easily see the different parts of the city. The residents also get more demanding, as an Airport and Seaport are necessary for a city to grow much beyond a Capital. If you haven't, now might be a good time to take out a loan.
7. Once a player achieves City status (10,000 people), the Bank gift is then awarded.

Answer: False

Although City status is one requirement for a Bank, the gift is not necessarily awarded. The other important requrement is that funds must be below $2,000. Once awarded, the Bank offers loans for $10,000. Interest is relatively low, too, as the player must only pay back $10,500.
8. For Metropolis status (100,000 people), what gift is awarded to the player?

Answer: Nothing

Unfortunately, all the player gets for this milestone is a pat on the back. Two Windmills are awarded in the game, one when 150 zones are developed and the other when 500 zones are developed. The Fountain is given for the city's 50 year anniversary. The Statue of the Mayor gift is given in "Sim City 2000" and is awarded for 50,000 people.
9. There are two facilities that randomly arise from residential zones. One is a hospital. What is the other one?

Answer: School

For every three schools up to nine, the city is awarded a Library gift. Hospitals, libraries, and schools are all available as normal buildings in "Sim City 2000".
10. Most gifts in the game benefit a certain type of zone more than the other types of zones. Which of these gifts is meant to go near industries?

Answer: Expo

The Expo encourages great development for nearby industrial sectors. Train Stations encourage commercial growth. Fire Department HQs can go wherever more fire coverage is needed, and the Windmill encourages nearby growth in general, but seems to have a residential edge.
