There are many ways you can tell that everything stops progressing. Doing some research on the internet can help, but there are small giveaways in the game too. Enemies always take off the same amount of damage if you haven't made any changes to your character. You deal the same amount of damage to them.

The Stormruler weapon, used on the Storm Beasts in 4-3, is a great way to tell. It has a consistent attack power and after the seventh round you'll realize that it's taking off the same amount of damage instead of less each playthrough.

You'd better have some inventory space for this shield. Weighing in at 30.0, it's clearly heavier than any other item. There are no units of weight in the inventory system though. The next heaviest item is the Dozer Axe weighing in at 22.0.

You better not harm the NPCs in the game because if you kill one, they don't come back until your next game. Although some are hard to kill, depending on your level, if you harm them enough they will fight back and they will keep after you until the next playthrough.

There are several requirements you have to fulfill before he/she will give it to you. You need to have accepted the mission he/she gives you in the beginning of the game, you need to have pure white character tendency, and you have to have killed all bosses but not have put The Old One back to sleep yet.

Pure Black World Tendency is when everything is the most difficult. Your health is cut more than normal and when you're in soul form, black phantoms appear, enemies have more health and they can deal more damage. Dying seven times or so in body form will get you this tendency if you're in Pure White World Tendency.

Spears are not the most powerful weapons in the game, but they are very useful when you can attack and block at the same time. Stamina regeneration is almost halted when the shield is raised though.
