Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which number key should you press if you want to use the Devastator Weapon?

Answer: 8

Indeed, pressing 8 will equip this beast of a weapon (if you have it, of course). Pressing 7 will pull out the Shrinker, 4 is for the Chaingun Cannon, and 6 is for the Pipebombs.
2. One of the innovations featured in "Duke Nukem 3D" is the addition of "portable" items that can be consumed at will by the player. There's one such item though, that once activated, can't be "turned off" until it's totally depleted. Which item are we talking about?

Answer: Steroids

The steroids increase your speed and your strength for a short time, while rendering you immune to shrinker rays. You can't stop its special effects once you use the item. The portable medkit can only be used whenever your health is below 100% with the remaining health points stored in your inventory for when you need them. Holoduke can be activated and deactivated at will, until its power runs out. Protective boots cannot be triggered manually by the player, but instead they activate themselves whenever he steps on toxic waste or any other hazardous materials, and stop acting once the player is back on safe ground.
3. Duke likes to throw in some funny one-liners every now and then. Which of the following lines is NOT something you'll hear from him at any point?

Answer: "What do you want on your tombstone?"

"Hail to the king...", among other phrases, is said when you pick up any weapon. "That's gotta hurt" is sometimes heard when an enemy is crushed or blasted into pieces. "What are you waiting for?" can be heard if the player remains idle for some time. "What do you want on your tombstone?" actually comes from "Half Life"; when you hurt a security guard, he will sometimes ask you this, right before starting to shoot at you.
4. Which one of the following enemies cannot fly?

Answer: Enforcer

Although they can perform some huge jumps, Enforcers are not able to fly. All other enemies mentioned can, either on their own, or with the aid of their equipment (it would be the Troopers' case)
5. Where does the final battle of the game take place?

Answer: In a football stadium

Unlike the other episode closers, the final level of the game is all about the boss battle.
The first two boss fights take place in alien ships. The other two locations are featured in regular game levels.
6. Back in those days, PC games would have a Shareware Version which didn't contain all features of the full game. Which is a weapon that's not available in the shareware version?

Answer: Laser Tripbomb

You can find laser bombs set as traps in a couple of levels of the episode, but you don't get to use them on your own.
7. How many secret levels are in the full, original version of the game?

Answer: Five

There is one secret level in episode 1 (Launch Facility), two in episode 2 (Spin Cycle and Lunatic Fringe) and two in episode 3 (Tier Drop and Freeway).
8. "Shrapnel City" episode takes place in several city locations. Which one of these is not visited in any level of the episode?

Answer: Supermarket

You get to explore the bank in E3M2 "Bank Roll", the radio station in E3M7 "Fahrenheit", and the hotel in E3M8 "Hotel Hell". You actually get to play a level in a supermarket in an expansion pack, but not in the original game.
9. Aside from all the aliens and mutation you'll come across, there's also a "normal" enemy, so to speak: a well known (and feared) animal form that hasn't been subject to any transformation from the aliens, but will attack you nonetheless. Where can you find this foe?

Answer: Underwater

"Duke Nukem 3D" features Sharks as enemies. They are very rare, as they only show up in a couple of levels in the third episode, don't pose much of a threat, as they are not too damaging and quite weak and slow. One can only wonder why the alien invasion spared them.
10. This game is famous for its numerous easter-eggs and references to movies, games, or pop culture in general. Which of the following movies is not referred to in any section of the game?

Answer: Psycho

Curiously, the other three movies are referenced through the corpses of their main characters: in E2M7 "Lunar Reactor" you can find Luke Skywalker hanging in a cave; in E3M8 "Hotel Hell" you find Dr. Jones impaled on the wall of a cave near the secret exit; in E3M11 "Freeway" you find Terminator crushed by a press, just like in the movie. My picks were actually quite tricky, since two of them are found in secret rooms and the other lies within a secret level.
