Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start with a Summon Spell that we all know and love, Phoenix. This fiery bird will burn itself at the end of one life, to be reborn from it's own ashes to start anew. Where did this creature come from in folklore/myth?

Answer: Egypt

Its origins are Egyptian, the Benu bird associated with the sun which was supposed to be born of fire. However the phoenix is not only known in the west; it was also a magical bird of China and Japan as well. In "Final Fantasy VII", pairing this summon materia with final attack can save buckets of grief fighting all the Weapons, especially Ruby Weapon.
2. In several games, summons are called Eidolons. What is an Eidolon...where did it spring from in mythology?

Answer: Eidolons are spirits or ghosts of the dead that possess the living in ancient Greek myth.

I've heard that Espers, eidolons, and aeons are all called simply, "summoned beasts" in the original Japanese games (though I have yet to confirm it).
Eidolons made their appearance in "Final Fantasy IV", also called that in "Final Fantasy X" "Final FantasyX-2" and "Final Fantasy XII" and it's sequel. In "Final Fantasy XIII" Eidolons were sent to cursed l'cie, when they had a huge conflict in thier Focus, by the Goddess Etro. Eidolons would either aid the characters if bested in battle, or end their misery. Nice.
3. Moving on to places and towns in the series. This structure's odd name seems to derive from Luna (moon), since it's connected with the Lunar Cry in "Final Fantasy VIII" and the Greek myth of Pandora's Box from which all the world's evils spring. But, Pandora closed the box realizing what she'd done before what last thing could escape?

Answer: Hope

The spirit of Hope named Elpis in Greek myth was what Pandora hastily shut in, fearing she'd be getting a big dose of Zues's wrath for opening it after being told not to. In "Final Fantasy VIII" Lunatic Pandora therefore is the name of the object, a box, filled with Evils from the Moon. Also, all the monsters inside Lunatic Pandora when entered in present time (not as Laguna) are on level 1.
4. Terra is another name seen frequently in the series, as the planet itself, or a character, or another world. Terra Branford from "Final Fantasy VI" has some abandonment issues, since her father disappeared mysteriously, her mother died, he was used by Gesthal, then she finds out she's half Esper...Who was her Esper father?

Answer: Maduin

From the Final Fantasy Wiki site, "Madonna (aka Madeline) stumbled into the Esper world, injured. An Esper named Maduin nursed her back to health. The other Espers did not approve of her, so she tried to leave, but was stopped by Maduin, who had fallen in love with her.

They had a baby, whom Maduin named Terra. Two years later, an army led by a man named Gestahl stumbled upon the Esper World, and captured many Epers." Maduin's attack is called Chaos Wave. Also Mael Duin is an Irish seafaring hero whose voyages are preserved in early Irish Christian writings.
5. The summon materia found in the Sleeping Forest in "Final Fantasy VII" is a bull like creature from what folklore?

Answer: Arabic

In this myth, the Earth rests on the back of Kujata, a mighty bull, which stands on the back of the primodial fish Leviathan. Also this installment is Kjata's (as it's spelled in the game) only appearance in the series.
6. Eiko's name in "Final Fantasy IX" means "long-lived child" or "splendid child" in what language?

Answer: Japanese

She hails from Madain Sari on the Outer Continent. Being from Madain Sari, she has a horn in her forehead and is able to summon Eidolons. We find out later that Dagger (a.k.a Garnet) is also from the same tribe, and her real name is Sarah (another repeated name in the series, "Final Fantasy XIII" and "Final Fantasy XIII-2" featured Serah Farron).
7. In "Final Fanasy VIII" you can draw the GF of wind, Pandemona, from Raijin during a boss battle.

Answer: False

Actually you get it from Fujin. Raijin and Fujin are Shinto wind and thunder gods (also said they were demons, cast out from deity status,) respectively. Which is why it fits to get the wind GF Pandemona from her. In the game's western versions, Pandemona can also be drawn from the boss in Ultimecia Castle, Red Giant, if the player failed to draw the GF from Fujin earlier in the game. You can do this with Carbuncle, Siren, Alexander, Leviathan, Cerberus, and Eden.
8. It's been a sword, and airship, a monster that almost destroyed an entire floating planet, and in Norse myth it's the predicted, inevitable death of all the Gods and the end of the world. What's its name?

Answer: Ragnarok

To the Norse Gods, is an event that is set off by the death of the god Balder, which was orchestrated by Loki. In "Final Fanasy XIII" Oerba Yun Fang and Oerba Dia Vanille were l'cie from Pulse whose Focus to transform into a being known as Ragnarok and destroy Orphan, the source of all power in Cocoon. Due to Vanille's fear of the beast's power, she ran off and left Fang to carry out the task on her own. Fang's incomplete Ragnarok managed to crack Cocoon's outer surface.

Then 500 years later Fang does it again because Vanille cannot. Etro, knowing that Cocoon's destruction and the resulting deaths would disrupt the natural order, transforms both Fang and Vanille into crystals to foil the fal'Cie's intent to force Etro's Gate to open. Also known as Crystal Sword, is a weapon that appears in various games in the series.

It is usually one of the most powerful swords.
9. Poor Josef. In "Final Fanasy II" he sacrificed himself to save his friends in the Snow Cave by being crushed by a huge boulder he held long enough for his companions to flee. But he is well remembered by an Eidolon in "Final Fantasy IX" who tells the tale to (a hopeless and lost) Garnet, in the Pinnacle Rocks. Which Eidolon is this?

Answer: Ramuh

After Garnet loses her Eidolons, Zorn and Thorn extracted ceremony twice in the game: first from Garnet, so that Queen Brahne can make use of her daughter's Eidolons to take over the nations of Cleyra and Lindblum she must reclaim them to be able to use them in battle. The first Eidolon she acquires is Ramuh.
10. Most of the names of the Espers in "Final Fantasy XII" have something to do with angels in both Judaism and Christianity.

Answer: True

They also have correlations with the Zodiac, and each of the Espers have titles, and each have fallen from the graces of their creators, the Ocurrians. For example, Ultima (again another recurring term) "The High Seraph" was the most beautiful, beloved, and treacherous of the scions, and started the rebellion that had her cast out.

She is the second most powerful Esper, but her attack, being non elemental as most Ultima spells in the series, is Holy.
11. Save the Queen could not refer to which one of these character?

Answer: Cloud

Since Cloud isn't royalty, this recurring weapon has nothing to do with him. Brahne (Queen of Alexandria), Garnet (succeeds Branhe) are protected by its wielder, the fierce and loyal Beatrix, in "Final Fanasy IX". It's also a greatsword that can be used in Ashe's game, "Final Fanasy XII", she being princess of Dalmasca. Usually a sword (also used by Cecil in "FFIV" , King of Baron, who save's his future queen Rosa), Quistis's version in "Final Fanasy VIII" was a whip.
12. Blades, Axes, Hair Clips: they're not fabulous to look at, but they're a Final Fantasy mainstay. But what real person's literary works did the idea of using Mythril for, well everything, come from?

Answer: J.R.R. Tolkien

Mythril is a valuable metal found in the Final Fantasy series. It can be crafted into many pieces of equipment, like swords, armor and gauntlets. The name is derived from a metal called Mithril, appearing in J.R.R. Tolkien's fictional universe featured in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

In fact, in "Final Fantasy VI", it is called Mithril. It is a possibility that Mythril is intended to be Mithril in English, but its spelling was changed after Final Fantasy VI to lessen the chances of a copyright lawsuit from Christopher Tolkien, J.R.R.'s third son.
13. The legendary sword of King Arthur, it shows up in nearly every "Final Fantasy" as a paladin sword or powerful weapon. It often inflicts Holy damage. It requires a key item to unlock in "Final Fantasy". What's that ingriedient?

Answer: Adamantite

It is acquired by getting the Adamantite from the Flying Fortress and giving it to the Dwarven Smith. It provides 45 Attack and 35 Accuracy. The other choices are needed to forge the sword in "Final Fanasy IV" and "Final Fanasy IX". Also, Excalibur, in particular, is the legendary blade Gilgamesh is searching for in several games, from "Final Fanasy V" and on he makes appearances as a foe or summon, saying "At long last! The ultimate sword...is...MINE! Now I can finally go home! Hey, where did YOU come from? Oh, you mean you were looking for the Excalibur, too? How rude of me. I mean, the four of you come all this way... Of course I'll let you have the sword. ... I'd say you've been hitting the oxyale a bit hard if you believed THAT!"
14. Also known as Valvalis or Valvalecia, she is a recurring character in the " Final Fantasy" universe. First appearing as a minor villain, she is a female fiend associated with the element of Wind. She has the signature ability of shielding herself by whipping her hair in order to form a protective whirlwind around her, and the recurring ability Maelstrom. She appeared in "Dawn of Souls" for the PSP, though she is originally an Archfiend that debuted in "Final Fanasy IV". What is her better known name?

Answer: Barbariccia

The Archfiends are minions of Zemus, who placed them under the command of Golbez. The Archfiends were only dispatched against Cecil Harvey after he began searching for a way to become a Paladin. Of course the party beats all four of them, but the were revived by Dr. Lugae in the Tower of Babil. And again, they fell.

The battle theme that plays whenever fighting the Elemental Archfiends is called "Battle with Golbez's Four Emperors" or "Battle with the Four Fiends".
15. The big bad boss. Every installment has one, or sometimes more that are hidden. "Final Fantasy IX" had an unbelievably powerful hidden boss, what was the boss' name and location?

Answer: Ozma, Chocobo's Air Garden

Ozma can quickly destroy the party with a variety of heavy attacks, including Curse, Doomsday, Holy, and Meteor. It will also frequently restore itself to full health. When defeated, Ozma will leave behind a complete Pumice, which Dagger can use to learn her final Eidolon, Ark. It's not the only way to get Ark though, thank heavens.
