His mother was Lucrecia Crescent, he was fathered by Hojo. Vincent is not Sephiroth's father, as revealed in the game, and during Vincent recalling how he loved and lost Lucrecia to Hojo it's never once said that they were married. Sephiroth thought of Gast like a father and mourned his death. So in the real world, the child would have his mother's surname, but this isn't real, is it?

It's never said when or why the name was changed. It was both Ifalna and Aerith's birthplace, where Gast fled to with Ifalna, and the home of the Cetra when Jenova fell close by and infected most of their race.

That would be Cloud, Red XIII, Vincent and Sephiroth. You have Sephiroth in your party during Cloud's flashback in Kalm, for maybe two or three battles, but that makes him playable.

Another neat way square connected characters by name. Cloud (as in foggy, unclear) struggled to regain his identity ever since Zack died (Strife). It took Tifa walking him through the past to finally cure him, since the answers were locked in her heart (Lockhart).

Sephiroth seemed to be the only subject that resembled Jenova at all. Until Kadaj, Loz and Yazoo were introduced in the movie, Sephiroth was the only experiment to share Jenova's silver hair.

We see in Cloud's Lifestream induced memories how Tifa lost her mother, then they each lost their last surviving parent in the Nibelheim fire. Cloud's father was dead before the start of the game (If you know anything about Mr. Strife I'd love to learn!) Another thing the two have in common. After the fire Zangan took Tifa to Midgar and Hojo took Cloud.

After ShinRa killed Ifalna, Aerith was the last Cetra standing, and she was only half Cetra. Though Sephiroth thought he was an Ancient due to being told his mother, Jenova was, he was not. At best he was a mutated alien being. The race died with Aerith.

Yuffie has her dad, Godo in Wutai, Nanaki has his somehow grandfather Bugenhagen, and though he never knew it, both Sephiroth's parents lived through most of the game (Lucretia didn't die, she vanished after seeing Vincent again). Although Marlene called Barret daddy and Aerith called Elmyra mom, they were both adopted.

Gast was the one that found Jenova near the place the Ancients used to live, and assumed she was a Cetra preserved in crystal for 2000 years. When Ifalna told him Jenova was not an Ancient and was the reason her race died, Gast fled Shinra and Hojo took over, not knowing the truth and continuing the project on his own son.

Another negative connection between them, Sephiroth's father killed Aerith's father, and the person he believed was his mother, Jenova, killed Aerith's ancestors, and eventually Aerith was murdered by Sephiroth himself. It almost seemed inevitable for a partial Jenova descendent to kill the last Cetra after 2000 years when it all began.

In Cloud's flashback of Zack, he remembered Zack telling him Cloud would make it through the Mako sickness and waved before he kamikazed himself into hundreds of ShinRa troops. Cloud watched his best friend die, then took Zack's sword and his memories to Midgar.

Aerith also told Cloud goodbye in a dream, knowing Sephiroth would kill her, but still went to pray to Holy to stop him. Again Cloud watched someone he loved murdered and could do nothing, and carried that guilt with him for a long time.

Elmyra, who adopted Aerith, had a husband fighting in Wutai during the war. Aerith herself felt him pass into the Lifestream, killed in battle. If you chose to go before the Temple, Aerith can see where her 'father' died. Nothing extra happens though.

The Crater was caused by Jenova's initial fall to the planet, and it was also where the Certra managed to seal her away. Not only did the failed clones and Cloud end up there, so did Sephiroth after Cloud threw him into the Lifestream five years before. the Lifestream could have carried him nowhere near the Crater, however Sephiroth had more Jenova cells than anyone alive, so Jenova called him back to her as well.
