Sonya Blade is a Special Forces lieutenant from Texas. She was inspired by the actress and martial artist Cynthia Rothrock, and is named after one of developer Ed Boon's sisters. Her trademark move is a combined throw and backflip.

In the original timeline, she and her unit are captured by the sorcerer Shang Tsung when they track Kano - an Australian thug and arms dealer, and Sonya's arch-nemesis - to a mysterious island, and she is forced to participant in Tsung's tournament. Later, she and several other heroes are killed by the Deadly Alliance and resurrected as zombie slaves, until Ermac and the undead Liu Kang bring them back to life. When Raiden alters the timeline in 'Mortal Kombat 9', Sonya is one of the few Earthrealm survivors at the end, and later marries Johnny Cage. By 'Mortal Kombat X', she has been promoted to General.

Elizabeth Malecki played Sonya in the first game, back when live actors and motion capture were used; Kerri Hoskins played her in 'Mortal Kombat 3', and also voiced her in 'Mortal Kombat 4'. MMA fighter Ronda Rousey is Sonya's voice actor in 'Mortal Kombat 11'. Katalin Zamiar played Mileena, Kitana and Jade in 'Mortal Kombat 2'.

The distinction between Mileena and Kitana in 'Mortal Kombat 2': Kitana wore blue and carried a pair of war fans, while Mileena wore purple and carried a pair of sai, which she uses in many of her Fatalities or throws like a projectile. She was played by Katalin Zamiar in 'Mortal Kombat 2', and Becky Gable in 'Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3', while her voice actor is Karen Strassman in 'Mortal Kombat 9' and 'Mortal Kombat X'. Like the male ninjas, the two characters' looks became more individualised once the games branched out into 3D. Ed Boon described Mileena and Kitana as being the female equivalent of Sub-Zero and Scorpion. While Kitana is the princess of Edenia, a nation assimilated by Outworld (where most of the 'Mortal Kombat' baddies come from), Mileena is a clone of her mixed with Tarkatan DNA, a fact which becomes obvious when she pulls her mask down to reveal her massive teeth. She is also more savage and mentally immature than Kitana, and sees Shao Kahn as her 'father'.

In the timeline of 'Mortal Kombat X', Mileena replaced Shao Kahn as Empress of Outworld, but was unpopular and overthrown by Kotal Kahn. She spends the game trying to get her throne back, but ends up being executed by having her face eaten by D'vorah's bugs.

Although Kitana does not die immediately, she later succumbs to her wounds. To add insult to injury, Sindel refuses to acknowledge her as her daughter. Both she and her victims end up as revenants in the Netherrealm (though Jax and Sub-Zero are later resurrected); she invites Cassie Cage to join them and have a proper upbringing, but Cassie refuses.

Sindel is Queen of Edenia, Shao Kahn's wife and Kitana's mother. She has the power to kill people with her voice. Shao Kahn killed her husband, King Jerrod, and forced her to marry him. Sindel killed herself, but Shao Kahn resurrected her and brainwashed her to be subservient to him. In the original timeline, she and Jade team up to get Kitana back from Onaga, the Dragon King. She was played by Lia Montelongo, who also played Sareena in 'Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero' and who, funnily enough, went out with Shao Kahn's actor, Brian Glynn.

Tanya, along with Rain, is one of the few evil Edenian characters. Though she appears to be good at first, she helps Shinnok and Quan Chi enter Edenia, and is even shown handing Liu Kang over to them in her (non-canon) ending. In 'Deception', she is captured by Baraka and immediately throws her lot in with Onaga, much to the disgust of Jade, who kills her in her (non-canon) ending by covering Tanya in Tarkata scent, causing the Tarkatan soldiers to tear her apart. Once Tanya's evil nature is revealed, she is drawn with a more sinister look, with white pupilless eyes. She is voiced by Jennifer Hale in 'Mortal Kombat X'.

Tanya is named after another of Ed Boon's sisters. She was created as a replacement for Kitana in 'Mortal Kombat 4', as the developers were originally going to include Kitana, but wanted a new character and used Kitana's model for Tanya. She fights with a bladed tonfa, and also uses a naginata in 'Mortal Kombat X', where she is a downloadable character along with the Predator, Tremor from 'Mortal Kombat: Special Forces', and Jason Vorhees. She and Mileena are shown to be close friends in the second timeline.

Jade is Kitana's friend and bodyguard, and fights with a staff-cum-spear, which Kitana wields in Jade's memory in her 'Mournful' variant in 'Mortal Kombat X'. From 'Deception' onwards, she also uses a bladed boomerang. Like the other female 'ninjas', she was played by Katalin Zamiar in 'Mortal Kombat 2' and Becky Gable in 'Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3'. To unlock her on 'Mortal Kombat 2', the player had to win a round while only performing low kicks (one of the hints for finding her is 'Chun who?', a reference to Chun-Li of 'Street Fighter' fame, who often used low kicks). In that game, she is immune to projectiles. In 'Mortal Kombat 9', she is voiced by Linda Lee.

In the original timeline, Jade is torn between obeying Shao Kahn and saving Kitana from execution, but ultimately sides with Kitana. Jade breaks Sindel out of prison after she is captured by Onaga, and the two team up to try and get Kitana back. However, in the second timeline, she is one of the victims of Sindel's rampage, and ends up as a revenant in the Netherrealm. She returns in 'Mortal Kombat 11', both as a revenant and as a normal human.

Skarlet is a female equivalent of Ermac, in that they are both the results of rumours, and have a similar origin story within 'Mortal Kombat' lore. As the digitised actors for 'Mortal Kombat 2', 'Mortal Kombat 3' and its successors wore red outfits when filming, the games would sometimes glitch and show one of the 'ninja' characters in a red outfit. In Ermac's case, the word 'ERMACS' - short for 'error macro' - appeared in the audit menu for the arcade version of 'Mortal Kombat', which spawned rumours of a character called Ermac, and the developers made him a reality in 'Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3'.) Skarlet was rumoured to be a secret character in 'Mortal Kombat 2' as a result of a glitch, and she became an official character in 'Mortal Kombat 9'. She also appeared chained up in Shao Kahn's arena.

As Ermac is made of souls, so Skarlet is made of the blood of fallen warriors; her Fatalities involve her either covering herself in the opponent's blood or attacking them with weapons made out of blood, and she is obsessed with taking her opponents' blood, especially from strong opponents such as Raiden. One exception is D'vorah, as Kytinn blood weakens her. In the comics, she corrupts Cassie and Jacqui by stabbing them with Kamidogu daggers. In 'Mortal Kombat 11', she is working for Shao Kahn, her creator.

D'vorah's name is taken from the Hebrew name 'Devorah', meaning 'bee', which is pretty appropriate for a female insectoid! She is actually made up of insects and refers to herself as a 'hive', with the pronoun 'this One'. She also keeps larvae inside her stomach, and pets them in her victory pose in 'Mortal Kombat X'. Her race, the Kytinn, live on the island of Arnyek, and reproduce by implanting larvae inside host bodies; the stronger a host, the stronger the larva will be. She has four arms and blue blood (incidentally, the only other characters whose blood is a colour other than red are the cyborgs, who bleed oil; Geras, who has bright blue blood; and Reptile, whose blood is green). Her larvae can also heal wounds. She is played by Kelly Hu.

D'vorah starts out as Kotal Kahn's first minister, but is later revealed to be working for Quan Chi. Like Tanya, loyalty is not her strong point; in her (non-canon) ending, she betrays Shinnok and uses him as a host for her larvae, creating extremely powerful beings. After executing Mileena, she steals Shinnok's amulet and hands it to Quan Chi, who is able to free Shinnok just before Scorpion kills him. When Cage is captured, she traps him in a cocoon and has her insects slowly eat his face, though his daughter saves him.

Li Mei is one of several slaves enlisted by the Deadly Alliance to build a palace to house the Soulnado, and Kano oversees the construction. Li Mei rebels and attacks Kano, and the Deadly Alliance are impressed and offer her freedom if she competes in a tournament. However, the tournament turns out to be a ruse, and they actually need Li Mei's soul to complete the Dragon King's undead army. Bo' Rai Cho frees Li Mei, but being a battery for a zombie soldier corrupts her, and in her (non-canon) ending, she betrays the heroes and marries Onaga. As for the other Fatalities, Sub-Zero does the skeleton rip, Kitana does the kiss, and the blood drinking is Nitara's Fatality.

Li Mei starts out wielding sai like Mileena, but switches to a sword known as the Kunlun Dao for 'Deception'. In the second timeline, she and other villagers escape to Earthrealm when Mileena attacks her village with Shinnok's amulet. Kano sneaks in with her, which the other heroes discover when Li Mei mentions that Cage's banter reminds her of a man with a red eye who came with her.

As her name suggests, Frost is an ice user, or cryomancer, like Sub-Zero. In the original timeline, when Sub-Zero became Grandmaster of the Lin Kuei and gained the Draog Medallion, Frost was one of his new recruits. In the original timeline, she tries to steal Sub-Zero's Dragon Medallion, but she cannot handle its power and it freezes her. In 'Mortal Kombat: Unchained', Frost has gone insane and is obsessed with Sub-Zero, thinking he abandoned her. She goes on a rampage and kills other Lin Kuei members and Sub-Zero has to freeze her again.

Frost appears in the 'Mortal Kombat X' comic as a fighter in death matches. She fights Cassie Cage and mocks her, calling her a spoiled brat. Cassie defeats her, but is reluctant to kill her; however, she has no choice when the organisers pull a gun on Jacqui. Luckily, the Black Dragon show up before that can happen. She later joins the Lin Kuei, but causes trouble when she attacks Scorpion while the Lin Kuei are trying to make peace with the Shirai Ryu. Sub-Zero freezes her to calm her down.

Answer: Jacqui, daughter of Jax

Jacqui Briggs is a Special Forces soldier, and the daughter of Jackson 'Jax' Briggs and his wife Vera. In the timeline of 'Mortal Kombat X', Jax was killed in Sindel's rampage and became a revenant, but was brought back to life by Raiden, along with Sub-Zero and Scorpion. He retired from the Special Forces and became a farmer. Unlike Sonya and Cage, he wasn't happy about his daughter joining the Special Forces, to the point where Cage ended up with a broken jaw after he broke the news to Jax. However, Jax eventually came round and trained Jacqui in the use of firearms.

Jacqui is Cassie's best friend, and Takeda's girlfriend. In the comic, both she and Cassie are kidnapped by the Black Dragon, and later fall victim to the Blood Magic. Her fighting style is similar to her father's, in that she relies on raw strength and punches, but has gauntlets instead of cybernetic arms. She is also a professional kickboxer. She has a major grudge against Quan Chi for turning her father into a zombie slave, and Ermac for ripping off Jax's arms. Her voice actor in 'Mortal Kombat X' is Danielle Nicolet.
