"Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening" 1 Quiz

For Gameboy, this quiz focuses on main plot points and characters from opening though to Kanalet Castle. A few questions may be hard, but I tried to keep it simple. Spoiler warning for those of you who haven't played this classic.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Link has set off on another quest. What is the purpose of his adventure in "Link's Awakening?"

Answer: To improve his skill

This information is found in the booklet that comes with the game. My game was second hand, so I feel your pain if you didn't have the owner's manual either. Link has been traveling to improve his skills and is returning to Hyrule on a ship in the opening scene.
2. What causes the shipwreck so that gets Link lost?

Answer: Lightning

In the introduction, you see a powerful storm crackling with lightning in the background. Link is holding on to the mast and rigging when a bolt of lightning hits the ship directly. Next thing you know, he's washed up on shore.
3. Marin finds Link lying on the beach and takes him to her house. After tossing and turning in his sleep, he wakes up and sees her standing by the bed. What does Link say to Marin when he wakes up?

Answer: He calls her Zelda.

You don't see his words in a dialogue box, but Marin certainly knows what he said. In the games, Link is a soft-spoken young man of few words; he often gives his name and short answers. When he wakes up from a very troubled sleep, he looks over at Marin and calls her Zelda.

She says she has no idea what he's talking about; she is Marin. Perhaps those bad dreams had Zelda in them? Maybe Marin looks like Zelda to Link.
4. Tarin gives Link the shield, and calls Link by name. How does he know Link's name?

Answer: He saw it on the shield.

Link apparently said something again or gave Tarin a strange look, because Tarin laughs and points out the name on the back of the shield. Link happily reclaims his shield and remembers that he can "fillip" enemies with it. I thought this word was misspelled, but it means "a slight goad or incentive; a small stimulus." (American Heritage College Dictionary) Basically, he can bounce enemies out of the way without getting hurt if he uses it.
5. Marin tells Link that other things have washed up on the beach where she found him. Link heads off to the beach to look for his sword. As soon as he finds it, who shows up?

Answer: Owl

The pesky owl shows up to tell Link where to go next. This is the origin of the annoying owl in "Ocarina of Time." There are several owl-stones here and there on Koholint Island, and with their cryptic messages they act as gossip stones. If you decipher a message, you might find a secret seashell or other prize.
6. Link needs a key to enter Tail Cave, and he's told to go look for it in the woods north of the village. What is the area called?

Answer: Mysterious Woods

The sign at the entrance of the woods says "Mysterious Woods (they're a little mysterious)". Indeed they are! If you don't know what you are doing, Link ends up right back where he started and an unknown troublemaker mocks him about getting lost. To solve this, you have to help Tarin.
7. Tarin has a habit of doing things he shouldn't. This time he ate some funny mushrooms and got transformed. What form does Tarin have when Link finds him?

Answer: Raccoon

Link stumbles on a talking raccoon with a sensitive nose. That might strike you as odd at first, but there's an entire village of talking animals, so you'll get used to it. If Link passes the raccoon by, he gets sidetracked in a mysterious way and mocked by a mysterious voice.

He needs to find a cave, go through it, and find a mushroom to take to the strange witch-lady. The powder she makes from the mushroom will light torches, dispel anti-fairies, transform some enemies into ridiculous creatures, and restore Tarin.

This powder is also very helpful in the final battle.
8. Link uses the Tail Key to enter Tail Cave, where he gets the item that lets him jump. What is it called?

Answer: Roc's feather

The item is a feather and it comes from a roc, "a mythical bird of prey having enormous size and strength." (American Heritage College Dictionary) The feather allows Link to jump and he somersaults as he does it- you get a brief view of the soles of his feet as he turns over. I usually equip the feather and sword, allowing for quick action and evasion. Jumping will also get you up an entire set of stairs much faster than walking.
9. When Link returns to Mabe Village after beating Tail Cave, something has greatly upset the villagers. What happened?

Answer: Moblins have stolen the dog.

When Link comes back to the village, the two boys that toss a ball back and forth run up to him and ramble on about the Moblins. They tell Link to go see for himself at Bow-wow's house. If you leave the screen and come back they will repeat the conversation. Obviously, Link is expected to do something about the annoying dog that always tries to bite him.

This might be confusing if you don't know what a Moblin is! They're the owlish looking creatures in Mysterious Woods, and you have to use the feather to get to their hideout east of Gaponga Swamp.
10. Link takes the dog for a walk, and uses it to get to Bottle Grotto. What does Madame Meow Meow give him when he returns her dog?

Answer: A kiss

"Smooch! You got a reward. Lu-u-u-u-ucky!" Obviously the writers were feeling a little sarcastic. Link hardly seems impressed and might be distressed by this action, but as usual he holds his peace. Bow-wow has a habit of eating enemies around Link, so don't be afraid to drag the dog as far as Link can explore before returning it.
11. Link would like to enter dungeon three, Key Cavern, but first he must deal with the man who once lived in Kanalet Castle. What is the man's name?

Answer: Richard

His name is Richard, and he says that you need a shovel. A shovel costs 200 rupees- unless you steal it, which I would highly discourage. Stealing will cause you trouble with your game file when you want to get the bow and arrow, so pay for the shovel. You don't need it to help Richard at all, but you do need it to get the key for the third dungeon.
12. The former owner of Kanalet Castle will only help Link if the hero will go find something in the castle. What five items must Link retrieve?

Answer: Five gold leaves

Richard tells you that he used to live at the castle until all his servants went crazy and chased him out. He left in such a hurry he was unable to collect his prized possessions, the gold leaves. If Link wants the key for level three, he will go find those leaves and get them back. Link heads off to face a castle full of armed, armored, and crazed guards-all in a day's work, right?
13. The former owner of Kanalet Castle has many small animals running around his new home. What kind of animal is he living with?

Answer: Frogs

Richard either really likes frogs, has a lot of frog princes in his care, or simply cannot get rid of the critters because they are hopping about the place like mad. A whole pond full of frogs shares the house with him. I find this rather bizarre, but there may be a joke behind it. Other houses in Koholint have mice or chickens in them, but no cats.
14. The gate to Kanalet Castle is locked. There must be some other way in- this is a video game after all! Who helps Link get in?

Answer: Kiki

Kiki is the name of the monkey. He had a part in "Link to the Past" and gets a little part in this one, and may have inspired the little monkeys in "Majora's Mask." If you bring Bow-wow past the Castle on your "walk," the dog and Kiki will start a fight. Even after Link has taken Bow-wow home, Kiki will not help unless Link has started that most important trading sequence. Go to Mabe Village and win the Yoshi Doll from the crane game.

It isn't hard- Yoshi is the only thing that doesn't move! Take Yoshi to the house north of Marin's, give it to the baby, and get a bow. Take the bow to the little dog house beside Madame Meow Meow's to get dog food. Take the dog food down to Sale's House of Bananas, and you will get the bananas for Kiki.
15. Link finds the secret passage under a bush and enters Kanalet Castle to find the items the owner wants back. Which item will Ulria give a clue for?

Answer: The one held by a bird

You don't have to dig up any of of the leaves. The shovel is not for the leaves, but for the "Slime Key" needed to open Key Cavern. Ulria is a good place to go if you don't have any clue what you're doing. Interpreting him and the owl stones can be hard because if you don't have a clue about their clue, you're stuck. However, Ulria tells Link to check with the raven/crow. Usually when Link approaches one, it will attack him and leave. The one in the castle won't budge unless he attacks it first by throwing a rock at it.
That's all for this quiz, see you again soon.
