quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which character was the hero of this story (the one the player controls, in other words)?

Answer: Tommy

Tommy used to be a taxi driver until some unpleasant brushes with gangsters made him lose his job (and nearly his life too). He thought it would be wiser to join the Mafia than the numerous bread-lines of the Great Depression.
2. Which Don do you serve in "Mafia"?

Answer: Don Salieri

Salieri and Morello are the two Bosses fighting for control in the city. They were originally both captains in Don Pepponi's family, until the early 20s when they decided to whack him and split the city between them. Their friendship went sour after that...
3. What's the name of the fictitious 1930s city where the game takes place?

Answer: Lost Heaven

The developers certainly did an impressive job designing this city! It's very lifelike and realistic.

Parts of Lost Heaven are named after real US places, like Hoboken, Chinatown, Little Italy and New Ark (or "Newark"). They also have a good replica of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge which connects two thirds of the city.
4. In which chapter did the gangsters go to Clark's Motel to pick up some money?

Answer: Ordinary Routine

Tommy, Paulie and Sam had traveled to Clark's Motel, just outside the city. It was Tommy's first mission (unless you count him blowing up Morello's cars beforehand) and they expected it to be a quick visit.

At the end of the visit Tommy had shot about ten rival gangsters, saved Sam and Paulie's lives, chased and killed a man who'd stolen their money, and nearly caused a dozen car accidents.

He muttered "If this is regular routine I'd hate to see what the next job's going to be!"
5. Whom of the following is NOT a member of the Salieri family that Tommy meets when he joins up?

Answer: Carlo

Ralphie was the stuttering mechanic, Vincenzo had a gun workshop outside the bar and Luigi was the bartender.

Carlo was actually the name of Salieri's 1935 bodyguard, but we do not meet him until much later in the game.
6. Which of the following is NOT part of Lost Heaven?

Answer: Harlem

Oakwood was one of the richer suburbs. The richest was Oak HILL which was situated above Oakwood. We find out at the very end of the game that Tommy lived in Oakwood.
7. How many cab passengers did Tom pick up on his last day as an ordinary taxi driver (the day he was nearly killed by Morello's goons, in other words)?

Answer: Five

He had just dropped off passenger number #5 in Little Italy when suddenly he was attacked by two of the Morello gangsters who'd chased his cab the other night. He ran before they could shoot him, thinking this was probably a good time for the Salieri Family to repay the favour they promised.

The Morello thugs foolishly chased Tommy into the Salieri Bar, and they were never seen again...
8. When Tom joins the Salieri Family the Morello Family is their number one adversary, but his own Don is a lot more vicious and sadistic than Don Morello.

Answer: False

Morello is by far the nastier Don. He prefers to rule by terror, violence and intimidation while Salieri prefers negotiation and bribery. In this game it feels like Salieri and his men are on the right side of wrong, while Morello and his numerically superior goons rule most of Lost Heaven.

Though later on in the game Salieri turns out to be not much better...
9. What was Paulie's surname?

Answer: We are not told

There is a picture on the back of the game's box of Paulie at his table, dead and bloodstained. At first I thought that was a bit of a giveaway, but it turns out later on he's actually lying on *the floor* when Tommy finds him dead.
10. Tom is telling the story of his life in the Mafia to a police detective named Norman and promising to repeat it all in court. Why does this happen?

Answer: Salieri wants to kill Tom

Detective Norman meets Tom at the very start of the game. The Irish, unshaven detective makes his disgust for wiseguys very clear, and he tolerates Tom at best. As soon as Tom says who he works for, he has Norman's undivided attention.
11. Tom marries Luigi the bartender's daughter, Sarah.

Answer: True

Tommy tells Norman at the very beginning he has a wife and daughter. We never see the daughter or learn her name, but when we see Tom and Sarah meeting the for first time, we can guess she is the future Mrs. Angelo.

The fact that the same evening he saved her from being assaulted by a gang of thugs certainly helped...
12. Who is the Salieri Family consiglieri?

Answer: Frank

Frank was the Don's best friend from his childhood days. When Tom first joins, Frank has a private word to the Don. He does not think they should trust Tommy just yet; as he seemed hesitant.

Salieri says "We'll see Frank. We'll see..."
13. If one wants to play the optional quests in "Mafia" whom does one need to visit?

Answer: Lucas Bertone

Lucas Bertone owns a car workshop where he repaired expensive cars owned by the richer LH citizens. Tommy first met Lucas when he had to take a racing-car to him late one night for some "work" before a race.

From then on, at the end of most quests, one has the option to go and visit Lucas instead of going back to Salieri's. Lucas would usually have a job that needed doing in a hurry and as a reward he would tell Tommy where to "find" a new luxury car.
14. When Frank breaks the Omerta Oath and betrays Salieri's secrets to the police, Tommy is given the unpleasant task of hunting down and killing their friend. Where does he catch Frank, for a final confrontation?

Answer: The Airport

When Tommy is standing before Frank with a sawn-off ready, Frank breaks down and confesses. He only betrayed the Family because the Morello-controlled police and prosecutors had seized and threatened his wife and child. He had no choice.

Tommy relented and found Frank's wife and daughter and brought the three of the together. Frank wanted them to fly away to Europe so he could stay, give Tommy the documents Morello intended for the police, and face Salieri's revenge alone. But Tommy told Frank to go with his family, and he'd get the documents himself. Frank thanked him profoundly.

Obviously Tommy would need to pretend he really had killed Frank, otherwise he would be next on Salieri's hit-list!
15. From 1930 to 1935 the Salieri and Morello Families were arch-enemies. But what event in 1935 made Don Salieri decided to eliminate Morello and his chief partners once and for all?

Answer: They tried to kill Salieri at a restaurant

Tommy and Salieri were enjoying a pizza lunch when suddenly two cars full of hitmen pulled up to the kerb and started blasting the restaurant. Innocents bystanders were killed. Tommy and Salieri took cover, the former muttering "Morello must have nothing better to do!"

Tommy had only gone along with his boss to that restaurant at the last minute. It's fair to say his quick-thinking and fast shooting saved Salieri's life that day.

When they killed all the would-be assassins Salieri concluded his bodyguard Carlo must have betrayed him. He'd called in sick that morning, like in "Godfather Pt 1".
16. When Tommy and Salieri go to see the traitor Carlo to avenge their near-deaths at the pizzeria, what is unusual about Tommy's hit on Carlo?

Answer: Carlo is in his underwear

Afterwords, that night we see the two Morello brothers discussing the failed hit. Don Morello warns his younger brother Sergio to look over his shoulder from now on, because he'll probably be next on Salieri's hitlist.

And rightly so, because after that meeting, Morello Jr. tells his goons to drown a dockland union official into the ocean. Once they've finished torturing him, that is.
17. The first person to be eliminated in the escalating gang war is the corrupt city councilor in Morello's pocket. Whereabouts does Tommy assassinate him?

Answer: On a boat, during his birthday party

In typical "Godfather" style Tommy goes on the boat unarmed (because they search everyone), but a gun is hidden for him inside a toilet. Tommy, disguised as a sailor, finds it and uses it on the councilor. He ends up cutting the man's birthday party speech short...

The councilor was actually the father of the chief swine who'd tried to rape Sarah in the chapter "A Moonlight Stroll". We assume he'd often turned a blind eye to his son's activities.
18. Who finally kills Sergio Morello Junior, Don Morello's brother and second-in-command who keeps evading multiple assassination attempts (thus known by the chapter "You Lucky Bastard!")?

Answer: Tommy

There actually was a Bill Gates in this game. He was a phony Kentucky whiskey-distiller who introduced himself as "William Gates" but everyone called him "Bill". He gets shot by Morello gangsters so I wonder if the game developers were anti-Microsoft...
19. Whereabouts do Tommy, Paulie and Sam finally whack Don Morello and end the war?

Answer: The airport

I was shouting and cheering for joy when Morello's plane crashed thanks to our shooting! Ironically the hit took place at the same airport where Frank was supposed to have been killed by Tommy.

Norman says to Tommy after he'd related this part "So! YOU killed Morello! That must have felt good, eh?"

As Tommy says, he'd thought that would be the end of the bloodshed and the violence, but it wasn't. Salieri became his next enemy.
20. In the last chapter, Tom enters an art gallery and is surrounded by armed goons of Salieri's - with plenty more in reserve upstairs. Someone (whom he has trusted throughout his gangster career) has betrayed him. Who?

Answer: Sam

In 1938, things are not going too well between Salieri and his hitmen. Paulie and Tommy learn he is using them to secretly obtain diamonds to keep for himself, and angrily decide to rob a bank to make money they can keep.

However Tom goes to Paulie's home on the morning after the heist, and finds his friend on the floor murdered! Salieri obviously had found out about the bank, and now the money was gone.

But then the telephone rings and it's Sam. He rang to warn Paulie but Tommy tells him he's too late and Sam curses. But Sam tells Tommy to meet him at the Art Gallery and he will help him. (It must be the weekend because the Gallery is deserted)

But when Tommy gets there he falls into Sam's trap...

However, before he died, Paulie had introduced Tommy to Yellow Pete, an underworld gunsmith. So Tommy, surrounded by Sam's goons, is able to pull out hidden artillery of his own and eliminate them instead!

There is a memorable final scene where Tom and Sam shoot it out and yell at each other. Tom is understandably reluctant to kill Sam who has always been his friend, whose life he's saved on numerous occasions. But in the end he is able to pull the trigger and Sam last words, stuttering in disbelief, are "You...did it."

That's why Tom went to Detective Norman at the start of the game. To become a Government Witness. (And anyway, Tommy has been disillusioned about "The Life" pretty much since he joined.) Norman agrees to provide new identities for Tom, Sarah and their girl in exchange for testimony.

So Tommy goes to court to testify and the whole Salieri Family is ruined. The gangsters get life or the electric chair (Salieri himself gets life). Needless to say, the Mafia does not control Lost Heaven anymore, and Tommy is hailed as a hero. The trial makes history.

But it's still not over.

About 20 years later, when grey-haired Tommy Angelo is living on the other side of the US and watering his roses one morning, two men stop their car in front of his house. The last words poor Tommy ever hear are "Mr. Salieri sends his regards."

"BANG!"

And this time, you do *not* get a "Game Over - Retry?" option.

I suppose the developers added this tragic piece at the end to show that anyone who joins organized crime ends up paying for it sooner or later. So I've certainly vowed not to, and I hope you do too.

Thanks for playing!
