Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of this adventure, we find our young Hero of Time plodding through a forest. Why has Link embarked on this journey?

Answer: To find a friend

The prologue states that Link is looking for his friend. Which friend he is looking for is not specifically stated, and fans are a little divided over the question. "Legend of Zelda" games often pit Link against Ganon, but not this game. In "Link's Awakening," Link began a journey over the sea to increase his skills.
2. Soon after we join Link, his peaceful ride through the forest ends abruptly. How does Link get knocked out in this beginning scene?

Answer: Epona rears and throws him

The fairies Tatl and Tael swoop down and scare Epona, causing the small horse to rear up and throw Link off. Skull Kid comes out of hiding to search Link's stuff, but pauses uncertainly when he sees exactly who it is that he is robbing. He mutters something and shrugs it off. Wait, does Skull Kid know who Link is?
3. Once Link is unconscious on the ground, Skull Kid shuffles out and goes through Link's stuff. Which two things does Skull Kid steal from Link?

Answer: Ocarina and Epona

Skull Kid is messing with the Ocarina of Time and doing his creepy double laugh when Link wakes up. The grimy little thief jumps on Epona to get away, but not before Link gets a hold of him. Both he and Link are dragged to the next area, where Skull Kid gets away with the horse because Link falls off. Skull Kid has stolen two things that are very important to Link.

The Ocarina was given to him by Princess Zelda herself. Epona was probably given to him by Malon. I don't care what Skull Kid thinks-he's in trouble!
4. Link pursues Skull Kid into a large hollow tree and falls down a deep hole. When he lands, he finds the Kid waiting for him. Link is then cursed by a creepy head-shaking ritual that turns him into a Deku scrub and by an incident that sticks him with Tatl for the rest of the game. Why doesn't Tatl stay with Skull Kid?

Answer: Skull Kid leaves her behind

Tatl begins to leave with Skull Kid, but turns back to stop Link from following them. She flies in Link's face and holds him back, and then tries to fly through the door at the last minute. Skull Kid doesn't wait for her and lets the doors slam shut in her face. Tatl calls for him to come back and open the doors, but she gets no answer.

She turns on Link, blames the poor cursed boy for her troubles, and demands his help to get out of there. Link stares at her, half in disbelief and half in memory of his last adventure with a fairy. Navi pestered Link enough, but Tatl occasionally insults him. :P
5. Link has never been a Deku before-it's not only weird, but new and difficult as well. Link follows Tatl's tedious directions about Deku abilities to get out of the strange passageway. What useless object does Tatl want Link to target just before reaching the Clock Tower?

Answer: A stump

Tatl uses the stump for the first "Z-target" of the game. She then orders Link to hurry up and get over there. Tatl observes that the stump's face wears the same sad expression that Link's currently wears. The stump is likely the origin of the Deku form Link has been forced to wear. We don't know what happened to the scrub (Skull Kid got him?), but he is probably the Deku Butler's lost son. (The Butler says Deku Link reminds him of his son.)
6. After a somewhat disturbing conversation with the unhappy mask salesman, Link leaves the Clock Tower and looks around South Clocktown as it looks at 6 AM. Just as Link arrives, what character can be seen at the southern mailbox?

Answer: Kafei

Kafei appears in the first hours to mail his first letter to Anju, and will do this every cycle (or loop if you prefer). Anju and Kafei's sub-plot is a long one, has required events in every day of a cycle, and is only complete about half an hour (real time a few minutes) before the end of the world. Many characters and masks are ultimately involved in this plot.
7. When he first arrives in Termina, Link is a Deku; and he has no weapons, no items, and very little time. There's a huge, ugly hunk of rock glaring down on Clock Town, and no one is doing anything about it. Termina needs a hero, and Link would really like to get out of this alive. How many days does Link have to get to Skull Kid?

Answer: Three days

The mask salesman tells Link to get Majora's Mask in three days because he has somewhere important to be by then. Yeah, it's called the land of the living! If Link can't get that mask away from Skull Kid, there won't be more than three days. Tatl protests that even if they never sleep, they still have only 72 hours to get to Skull Kid.
8. The first cycle, Link is stuck in Clock Town because the guards consider him an unprotected kid. In fact, there are many things that Deku Link can't do, but he has to do *something!* Link does what he always does-whatever he can, one thing at a time. A trading sequence! To face Skull Kid at the end of the first cycle, which of these must Link do first?

Answer: Catch a stray fairy

Tat'l suggests they visit the Great Fairy first. Link finds that the Great Fairy has been fragmented by the Skull Kid. To proceed, he must return the stray fairy to the Great Fairy fountain. For this act, Link gets the magic-powered bubbles that he needs to pop the Skull Kid balloon outside her fountain.

After he pops the balloon, he can play a game with the Bomber Gang for a secret code. With the code, Link can enter the observatory and get the Moon's Tear. Back in town, he can trade the Moon's Tear to the Business Scrub for the Title Deed, the rights to the flower. Link needs the flower to make it into the Clock Tower because his Deku form is just a bit too short to climb up the steps on its side. (Couldn't we just ask for a boost? Aw, man...)
9. Link can't fight Skull Kid at the end of the first cycle, but he retrieves one of the stolen items and special memory. Looking up, he sees that the moon is about to land on them. "We need more time!" Tatl cries to the gods. Time? Link knows that tune! Link and Tatl are hurled backwards through time to stand before the Clock Tower on the morning of the first day. After the first ride through time, what does Tatl say?

Answer: "What are you?"

She also made a startled remark when Link pulled out the Deku Pipes (that was quite a surprise to me too!) After the time warp, she stutters and stammers while looking around South Clock Town, seeing that it is indeed the first day. When she's done stammering, she turns around and demands of a very calm and always quiet Link, "What are you?" The answer is simple: he's the Hero of Time! :)
10. Link's had enough quirky Deku shuffling and spinning; he wants to be Hylian again, and the salesman said he could help. Link doesn't have any mask to give the guy, but he's already done this whole thing as a scrub without getting anywhere. Fortunately, Link gets the Song of Healing before the salesman asks about Majora's Mask. What instrument does the Salesman play to teach Link the Song of Healing?

Answer: Organ

Link learns the Song of Healing by playing along as the salesman plays an organ that sits in the Clock Tower. When Link plays the song, he returns to normal and seals the transformation magic in the mask. With the Deku, Goron, and Zora masks, Link gets a touching clip about the race; and this one involves the angry Deku going away.

The Song of Healing, as heard after you enter the notes on the screen, appears one place in "Ocarina of Time;" but it's a little hard to find. :) When asked about Majora's Mask, Link hangs his head and is then almost strangled by the furious salesman. Be careful, that guy is unstable!
11. During the game, you must play the Song of Time frequently to restart the cycle and get more time to gather items and save the world. What happens if Link fails to play the Song of Time before the end of the last day?

Answer: A wall of fire is made, black screen, return to Salesman

The moon comes down and begins to crush the Clock Tower. The next scene shows a wall of fire rushing out from the town toward the rest of Termina. When the scene fades in, Link is standing (I assume he's a little shook up) before the mask salesman. The salesman smugly comments on Link's expression, saying he must have seen something pretty bad, and tells him that he should go get Majora's Mask now. (I had to try it once-just to see what happened. Once was enough for me!)
12. What jumping features does Link NOT have in Majora's Mask?

Answer: Double Jump

All of Link's jumps are technically "auto-jumps." That means that you, the player, do not push a button to make him jump. Double jump is a frequently used technique in other games that allows you to jump higher by tapping a jump button twice. Link's longer jump is not a "double jump" but rather a rolling jump.

The idea behind the rolling jump is that Link moves just a bit faster while rolling-more speed means more distance. Link also gained a little acrobatic skill between "Ocarina of Time" and "Majora's Mask" because in some longer jumps he flips or somersaults.
13. Remember the cutesy, yellow Bunny Hood from "Ocarina of Time"? It's back, and it makes Link faster. Swallow your pride, don the bunny ears, and race around the world! When can Link get the amazingly useful Bunny Hood?

Answer: No temple required

All Link needs is the Song of Healing and the Bremen Mask. The very same cycle he gets the "Song of Healing" and returns to being Hylian, he can get the Bunny Hood. Talk to Guru-guru when he's alone and get the Bremen Mask from him, and then spend the cycle anyway you want until the third day. On the third day, visit Romani Ranch, and the man with the pickax will have finally cleared the pass-two days too late to save the ranch. You cannot help Romani or rescue Epona, but you can go to the chicken house and march for the chicks and get the hood. I always use the Bunny Hood to chase the monkeys and butler through the mazes, and simply to speed things up. You can also use the Bunny Hood to cheat on the Postman's mini-game because the hood causes the timer to remain on-screen.
14. Those annoying Clock Town guards just don't realize just who Link is. What convinces them that human (Hylian) Link can leave town?

Answer: Sword

They are forever stopping Link and telling him he cannot leave town. (He needs a big flashing sign: "Hero of Time.") They begin telling him it is too dangerous outside and then spot the hilt at his shoulder (or the sword in his hand). Any soldier in town will then leave him alone for the rest of the cycle.

They will never allow Deku Link to leave as such, believing him to be too young. They ignore Link as himself if the Goron or Zora form has talked to a guard. The guard's tenacity can be really frustrating if one of Jim's gang runs behind him during the first cycle when Link is stuck as a Deku. Isn't the brat a kid too? :P Link must leave the area and return to try again.
15. Two people in Clock Town will specifically address Link as the same person every time they see him, no matter what form he's in. Who are these people?

Answer: Granny and Banker

Anju's Granny will always mistake Link for Tortus even if he's a lumbering Goron (except when he's wearing Kafei's mask--then she calls him Dotour). The poor senile woman hasn't completely lost it, though. She keeps a dairy of the tricks she plays to avoid eating her granddaughter's cooking. The Banker is also quite funny. Whether it's Deku or Goron Link, the Banker will always call Link "that little guy" who deposited all those rupees. :)

If you would like to argue, please join the group in the mayor's office. Otherwise, all questions, comments, and criticisms are welcome.
