Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the starting town, Twinleaf, you will see patches of a substance that are both out of place and were not present in "Diamond" or "Pearl". What is this substance?

Answer: snow

While sand and grass are both found in Twinleaf, the snow patches were not present in the previous Sinnoh games; they also appear consistently until the route before Jubilife. This is supposedly caused by the climate shift in Sinnoh, which is also why the outfits of the main characters wear are better suited for the cold, though the female main character still wears a rather short skirt. Go figure.
2. How many different forms does Rotom have?

Answer: Six

In addition to its basic form, in Platinum Rotom adds five new forms that look like electrical appliances - a fan, a toaster oven, a refrigerator, a washing machine, and a lawnmower. Their stats are all identical to each other, but higher than the original Rotom's.

The new forms can be unlocked by using an event-obtained item called the Secret Key on a locked door on the ground floor of the Galactic building in Eterna. Each of these new forms has its own signature attack that the oeiginal Rotom did not - the fan gets Air Slash, the toaster oven gets Overheat, the refrigerator gets Blizzard, the washing machine gets Hydro Pump, and the lawnmower gets Leaf Storm. Regrettably, these cool new forms cannot be used over Wi-Fi or in the Battle Frontier.
3. A number of Pokemon that were new to the Sinnoh games did not appear in the Sinnoh Dex in "Diamond"/"Pearl". These Pokemon were among a number of Pokemon added to the Sinnoh Dex in "Platinum". How many Pokemon are in the "Platinum" Sinnoh Dex that weren't in the "Diamond"/"Pearl" Sinnoh Dex?

Answer: 59

There were 151 Pokemon in the "Diamond"/"Pearl" Sinnoh Dex, while 210 Pokemon are featured in the "Platinum" Sinnoh Dex. Using basic subtraction, 210 - 151 = 59. These Pokemon include a number of Sinnoh Legendaries that were obtainable only after obtaining the National Dex in "Diamond"/"Pearl", a number of new evolutions of old Pokemon and the Pokemon they evolve from, such as Electivire and Magmortar (who evolve from Electabuzz and Magmar, respectively), and a few lines that are the same as they were in previous generations of games, such as the Swablu and Houndour lines.

As in "Diamond"/"Pearl", you need to "see" all of the Pokemon in the Sinnoh Dex before you can obtain the National Dex from Professor Rowan.
4. A number of gym layouts in "Platinum" have been revamped from their "Diamond"/"Pearl" designs. One of these is the gym in Eterna City. A Grass-type gym, the giant flower petals in the center of the gym form what shape?

Answer: clock

Whenever you defeat a trainer, the petals rotate toward different "times", allowing you to travel along them to different areas of the gym to battle different trainers. Like in "Diamond"/"Pearl", this means you must battle all the other trainers in the gym before you can challenge the gym leader, Gardenia.
5. As well as the layout, the order in which you challenge the gyms has changed from "Diamond"/"Pearl". In "Platinum", what is the main type of the third gym you challenge?

Answer: Ghost

The third gym you challenge in Platinum is the Hearthome Gym, and its leader, Fantina. In "Diamond"/"Pearl", the third gym you challenged was the Veilstone gym, which is Fighting-typed. You could not battle Fantina in "Diamond"/"Pearl" until you defeated the Veilstone gym and the Pastoria gym, which is Water-typed.

In Platinum, Veilstone is the fourth gym and Pastoria is the fifth gym. There is no Dark gym in "Diamond"/"Pearl" or "Platinum".
6. In Hearthome City, you meet the person who runs the PC system in Sinnoh, a woman by the name of Bebe. As thanks for using her PC system, she gives you a Pokemon. What is the name of this Pokemon?

Answer: Eevee

While Bebe also gave you an Eevee in "Diamond"/"Pearl", she did not give it to you until after you had beaten the Elite Four and obtained the National Dex. The other three Pokemon are also obtained as gifts in "Platinum" - the Champion, Cynthia, gives you a Togepi egg when you cross paths in Eterna, you receive a Porygon from a man in a house in Veilstone, and you obtain an egg containing a Riolu from a man named Riley on Iron Island, after you team up with Riley and his Lucario to force a pair of Team Galactic grunts to leave the island.
7. In Pastoria, there is a large mounted picture with a hole in it where the head of a Pokemon would be. If you walk up to the picture from behind, your face fits into the hole. After you do this, a Pokemon, the same one featured in the picture, may appear. If it does, it will then run into the building that opens into the Great Marsh. What is the name of this Pokemon?

Answer: Croagunk

Croagunk is a toxic frog, a Poison/Fighting type, and is native only to the Great Marsh and the marshy route west of Pastoria. It is also the town's mascot, I guess because of the link the two share with the marsh. The other three can also be found in the Great Marsh, but none of them have the build to really "run". I've never figured out what circumstances are required for the Croagunk to appear and run past, but it's a fun little tidbit for those who want a little extra entertainment in the game.
8. What is the name of the world where Giratina lives?

Answer: Distortion World

Torn World is the Japanese name (translated, obviously), Origin World was made up by me, coming from the name of the Forme of Giratina that appears in the Distortion World - Giratina Origin Forme - while Mirror World is also made up. The Distortion World is a very cool location that you first get thrown into after Cyrus triggers the powers of Dialga and Palkia - Giratina then shows up as a massive shadow and drags you, Cynthia, and Cyrus into the Distortion World. You then have to navigate through a number of obstacles that make full use of the DS' 3D capabilities, including sideways walls, an upside-down waterfall, and platforms that ascend and descend to different levels.

The background music for the Distortion World is, quite fittingly, impressively ominous. Definitely one of the best aspects of the game, provided the puzzles and obstacles don't trip you up.
9. When you challenge the Elite Four in "Platinum", what Pokemon is on Cynthia's roster that was absent from it in "Diamond"/"Pearl"?

Answer: Togekiss

Togekiss wasn't present on Cynthia's roster previously because it was not in the Sinnoh Dex in "Diamond"/"Pearl". Lucario was in Cynthia's roster in both "Diamond"/"Pearl" and "Platinum", Houndoom was never on Cynthia's team (though it was on the roster of the third Elite Four member, Flint, in "Platinum"), and Gastrodon was on Cynthia's roster in "Diamond"/"Pearl" but not in "Platinum" - Togekiss replaced it.

In a way, it makes sense Cynthia has Togekiss - where do you think she got that Togepi egg she gave you? Most likely it was from her Togekiss, though the fact was never actually mentioned in the game. Feel free to assume what you want.
10. In the "Platinum" Battle Frontier, what are the names of the five featured facilities?

Answer: Tower, Factory, Hall, Arcade, Castle

The Battle Frontier is in the Battle Zone - the large island to the northeast of the rest of Sinnoh - just north of the Fight Area, in the same place where the Battle Park was in Diamond/Pearl. The Park's only facility was the Tower, though - it was just at the back of a large mansion-esque front lawn.

While "Platinum's" Frontier does not have as many facilities as the one in "Pokemon Emerald" (which had seven), it is still formidable. The Tower is a constant since the days of "Crystal", and features a standard battling mode.

The Factory, the only other facility brought back from "Emerald", has you use pre-trained "rental" Pokemon, forcing you to use strategy in the choices you select. The Hall lets you use a single Pokemon to go on a streak against opposing trainers, and in which you can choose the primary type of their Pokemon; don't be fooled, the longer your streak grows the better the counters your opponent has for your Pokemon - if you use Lucario and select Normal, you may run into a Pidgeot with Heat Wave.

The Arcade makes you spin a roulette and pick where it stops - this can determine various circumstances for the battle, including causing statuses to all of the Pokemon on either competitor's team, battling in a constant weather, or handing out items to either competitor, among others. The Castle lets you use "Castle Points" you earn by defeating trainers in the Castle in order to do things such as buy hold items, increase your Pokemon's level, see your opponent's lineup, or heal your Pokemon (they don't heal automatically). All of these facilities have their merits, and they can all be challenging to conquer. Of course, that makes it that much more of a success when you finally manage to beat them all.
