Question 1 of 10
1. Sonic has produced a lot of iconic moments in his earlier games. One such moment was Sonic snowboarding down the side of an icy mountain. It didn't really serve a purpose beyond looking pretty but since then, most "Sonic" titles have featured an ice stage or two. Which of these ice stages was the first in the franchise? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Dr. Eggman has stated several times that he wants to build 'Eggmanland' which would stand as a testament to his genius. As it turns out, he did actually manage to build it in "Sonic Unleashed" but many people don't know that it also has another name. What is the alternate stage name for Eggmanland? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. Alliteration is something that the "Sonic" franchise has been using a lot of since its inception. With the franchise producing so many stages across so many games, there has been no shortage of material to use in this manner. Which of these stage names is an example of alliteration? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. In "Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed", Sonic and his friends race along tracks based on Sega games with members of other Sega properties. Utilizing mods allows players to alter a vehicle's stats and every character has a 'console' mod. The earliest console mod to be unlocked is the Genesis mod which can be used by characters that appeared on the Sega Genesis including several "Sonic" characters. Which character that can use this mod should NOT be able to? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Sonic is pretty fast on his feet but as a lot of people may know, he can't swim too good. Do you know the reason why? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. In "Shadow the Hedgehog", Sonic's rival gets a game of his own as he either aids an army of alien invaders or helps drive them off all while he tries to remember who he is. The game featured four different themes for Shadow ranging from a Pure Evil theme to a Pure Hero theme. What was the name of his Neutral Hero theme? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. The "Sonic" franchise is no stranger to reusing music. For example, "Sonic Pocket Adventure" was the first handheld game in the series released after "Sonic Adventure" and it reused a lot of music from Sonic's Genesis days. The sixth level in the game is called 'Gigantic Angel' and reuses what two Genesis era "Sonic" tunes? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. When "Sonic 4: Episode I" was released, many fans were disappointed by how much it relied on preexisting material. The game's second episode made harder strides to be something original but its levels were all pseudo-remakes of Genesis stages much as the stages in the first episode were. Which of these "Sonic 4" stages was NOT a pseudo-remake of a Sega Genesis stage? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Do you remember that barrel from Carnival Night Act 2? of course you do. Everyone does. That barrel has more than likely caused more Time Over deaths than the Mystic Cave's pit of no return in "Sonic 2".

For those who don't know, in "Sonic 3" there was a level called Carnival Night and in the second act of Carnival Night, there was a puzzle in which Sonic gets locked inside a small room with nothing but a barrel. This puzzle has stumped "Sonic" fans for generations upon generations. So, how do you get past it?

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Icy Isle from "SegaSonic the Hedgehog"

"SegaSonic the Hedgehog" was an isometric arcade game that marked the first of two appearances in the franchise for Mighty the Armadillo and the only appearance of Ray the Flying Squirrel. Players were forced to travel through stages using a trackball to control how fast their character moved.

While this game was originally slated to be released as part of "Sonic Gems Collection", emulating the trackball controls proved too difficult and the idea was dropped.
2. Dr. Eggman has stated several times that he wants to build 'Eggmanland' which would stand as a testament to his genius. As it turns out, he did actually manage to build it in "Sonic Unleashed" but many people don't know that it also has another name. What is the alternate stage name for Eggmanland?

Answer: Crimson Carnival

In the original Japanese version of the game, the technical name for the Eggmanland stage was 'Crimson Carnival'. Furthermore, 'Savannah Citadel' was known as 'Clay Castle' and 'Rooftop Run' was rather unimpressively known as 'Orange Rooftops'. Eggmanland itself features three Hedgehog segments alternating with three Werehog segments. Even at its hardest, the Eggmanland time trial gives players over half an hour to finish the level.
3. Alliteration is something that the "Sonic" franchise has been using a lot of since its inception. With the franchise producing so many stages across so many games, there has been no shortage of material to use in this manner. Which of these stage names is an example of alliteration?

Answer: 'Mystic Mansion' from "Sonic Heroes"

Alliteration is when two or more consecutive words begin with the same letter. For example, 'Quartz Quadrant' from "Sonic CD", 'Rooftop Run' from "Sonic Unleashed" or 'Cryptic Castle' from "Shadow the Hedgehog".

Interestingly, though "Sonic CD" is often credited as being the game that started this trend, that honor actually belongs to "SegaSonic the Hedgehog" as it was released nearly three months earlier.

Answer: Amy Rose

Amy Rose first appeared in "Sonic CD" which was a Sega CD exclusive. She would later appear in "Sonic Drift" for the Game Gear and "Sonic R" for the Saturn and PC before returning in "Sonic Adventure" for the Dreamcast.

At no point in her existence is Amy even mentioned in the Genesis games.
5. Sonic is pretty fast on his feet but as a lot of people may know, he can't swim too good. Do you know the reason why?

Answer: Misinformation

While developing the character of Sonic the Hedgehog, Yuji Naka was under the assumption that hedgehogs couldn't swim. Not only can hedgehogs swim but they're actually pretty fast swimmers. However, they tend to tire out quickly and have been known to drown from being trapped in water.

For some reason, I highly doubt that the 'drowning' fanfare played whenever that happened.
6. In what "Sonic" game was the first singular level to use alliteration featured in?

Answer: "Sonic 2"

The first alliterate stage in the franchise was Oil Ocean, the seventh stage in "Sonic 2" and the last in the game to follow the standard two-act structure. Oil Ocean was quickly followed by Trap Tower and Palmtree Panic from "SegaSonic the Hedgehog" and "Sonic CD' respectively.

Answer: 'Chosen One'

The Neutral Hero storyline often ended with Shadow remorseful about the tragedy that occurred as a result of his creation. These endings usually end with Shadow either promising to protect the ARK or to find some way to repent for his past transgressions.

His themes from Pure Evil to Pure Hero are as follows: 'Almost Dead', 'Waking Up', 'Chosen One' and finally 'All Hail Shadow'.

Answer: 'Desert Palace' & 'Chrome Gadget' from "Sonic 3"

"Sonic Pocket Adventure" was not only the first handheld "Sonic" game to not be featured on a Sega handheld (it was released for the Neo Geo Pocket Color) but it was also the first handheld "Sonic' game to feature a green-eyed Sonic sprite. While the game's choice in music to reuse was fine, it's implementation was lacking. Strangely, the game's true final boss is fought with 'Sky Sanctuary' playing in the background making for an odd audio-visual combination.

Answer: White Park

'Lost Labyrinth' and 'Mad Gear' were based on 'Labyrinth' and 'Scrap Brain' from "Sonic the Hedgehog" respectively while 'Sylvania Castle' was based on the "Sonic 2" stage 'Aquatic Ruin'. Because "Sonic 4" focused more on the first two Genesis titles, White Park is the only stage in either game that is not a pseudo-remake.

Answer: By holding up and down on the D-pad

Yea, believe it or not, one of the most infamous moments in "Sonic" history comes down to ignorant gamers. By holding the up and down directional buttons, Sonic can cause the barrel to move up and down. Doing so repeatedly will cause the barrel to start shooting high enough into the air for Sonic to jump off and slip underneath it.

So go on. Continue your quest to defeat Robotnik but never forget those that died in vain back in that barrel room.
