It takes a very long time to actually take on Genesis for real for you are constantly having to deal with his very annoying clones. Thankfully the time does come where the battle the man himself after you infiltrate a facility near Mount Nibel where you find him threatening Hollander.

In the streets of Midgar, soldier swarm at you. After fighting through them you are forced to battle a the behemoth whom is a cut above the soldier targets. Once this is done and you have watched the cutscenes, it is the end of the first chapter.

After you enter the facility, a battle with Genesis as his usual being begins, ending in his fall over a ledge into darkness. Once this is done you find Cloud and Tseng injured and continue forward to find the now 'mutated' Angeal with an angel wing. He saves you from enemies, then becomes a best by allowing them to mesh with him. Zack, heartbroken, battles him to the death and inherits his sword.

After entering the life stream you find Genesis whom transforms into a giant beast wielding an enormous sword, but that is still not your final battle. Once you have pounded him to zero health he changes back to the normal Genesis for a rather simple battle that ends up being the last.
