Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which cities do the House of Brutii start off with in the game?

Answer: Croton and Tarentum

The Brutii family control the southern tip of Italia, which was called in ancient times, "Magna Graecia" (Great Greece). This facilitates the projected expansion of the Brutii faction into Greece and the East.
2. If playing as the Julii faction, which place does the first Senate mission order you to capture?

Answer: Segesta

The Julii have a city, Arretium, close to the town of Segesta, which is why the Senate's first issued mission is to conquer the town. Normally, the town is previously occupied by Rebels but if the mission is attempted promptly, then the Gallic faction can install themselves in Segesta.
3. You can build ports at some settlements, but only ones which are relatively close to the coast, so which of these would be ineligible for a port?

Answer: Alesia

Alesia is situated in the region of Central Gaul, hence it is nowhere near the coast, so a port is out of the question. To improve trade, the options are to improve the roads and the forum/trader, or just to conquer nearby regions. Narbo Martius is another settlement in Gaul, but it is on the coast near Massilia (Marseille). Corduba is in Hispania and Thapsus is located just south of Carthage.
4. Which of these is NOT a settlement that forms part of the Egyptian territory at the start of the game?

Answer: Susa

At the beginning of the game, Egypt, which almost certainly will grow to be the most powerful faction, owns six settlements. These include the incorrect answers, as listed above, and also Sidon, Salamis and Thebes. Susa is in fact owned by the Parthian faction. Alexandria is the Egyptian capital, until you decide to change it.
5. Which of these battles is NOT one that is available to play as a historical battle scenario?

Answer: Battle of Actium

The Battle of Actium was fought in 31 BC between the forces of Octavian and Mark Antony allied with Pharaoh Cleopatra VII. This battle led to Octavian being dubbed Augustus Caesar and taking the role of 'Princeps'/First Citizen in the Roman Republic.
6. When looking at the "Rome: Total War" map, the colour that a province is shaded when it has been taken by the Seleucid Empire is turquoise?

Answer: False

The colour that denotes the property of the Seleucid Empire is pale pink. The Julii family is red, the Brutii green, the Scipii dark blue and SPQR purple. The Greeks are cream, Macedon is black, Egypt is yellow, Scythia is orange, Dacia is brown, Britannia is light blue, Carthage is white, Germania is maroon, Pontus is sea blue, Numidia is teal, Hispania is hazelnut, Gaul is green, Thrace is sky blue, Parthia is purple and Armenia is mint green.
7. Which of these historical places is part of the original Britannia faction's territory?

Answer: Samarobriva

Samarobriva is the only Britannic settlement not in what is now known as the U.K. It is in Gaul, close to the River Somme. Rutupiae is the ancient Latin name for Richborough, as Isca Dumnoniorum is the Latin name for Exeter in Devon. Verulamium is what the Romans called the old town of St. Albans, where ruins still exist from the time of the ancient Romans.
8. When you conquer a settlement, you have the options to Occupy, Enslave or _____ the settlement.

Answer: Exterminate

All of these options have an effect on the amount of money your faction has earned but may have a negative effect on the population count and growth. Occupy pays a small amount of denarii (if playing as a faction of Rome) but does not reduce the population of the settlement. Enslave reduces the city population by half and generates more revenue than Occupy. Exterminate eliminates 75% of the population of the city but gives a high amount of money to the faction.
9. When a member of your family is part of an armed force, automatically they become the commander of said force. They can also become resident in conquered settlements. What does NOT happen when a family member enters a settlement?

Answer: Tax rate increases

The tax rate is something that players control themselves, it only has one automatic setting, which is after a settlement is conquered the tax rate is set at 'Normal', which does not change automatically when a family member enters a settlement. Population growth can be affected either positively or negatively, depending on the traits of the family member in question.
10. The region that has Capua (modern Santa Maria Capua Vetere) as its regional capital is ____________.

Answer: Campania

Campania was a part of the southern region of Italia, known as Magna Graecia. It also contains the ancient settlements of Naples (Neapolis), Pompeii, Stabiae and Herculaneum, some of which were obliterated by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in AD 79. It was known for its rich countryside that was suitable for viticulture and farming.
